1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor an AWS live-video workflow, start with AWS Elemental Workflow Monitor: discover supported connected resources into a signal map, then use CloudWatch alarm and EventBridge rule templates to watch the path. Keep the service-specific views as well. The map gives you workflow context; MediaConnect, MediaLive, and MediaPackage metrics and events help identify whether a fault is at transport and ingest, encoding, or packaging. A signal map alone does not confirm that a viewer received and played the stream.
Build an end-to-end view with Workflow Monitor
AWS Elemental Workflow Monitor can discover interconnected supported resources starting from a resource in the AWS console or through its API, then show them and their connections in a signal map. Supported services include MediaConnect, MediaLive, MediaPackage, MediaTailor, S3, and CloudFront. You can use a map simply to visualize resources, or enhance it with monitoring templates deployed through CloudFormation. AWS describes Workflow Monitor itself as having no direct cost; the resources and data it creates can still incur charges, covered below. AWS: Monitoring AWS media services with workflow monitor
What to inspect in a signal map
The overview shows signal-map monitoring state and associated metrics and logs. Within a map, inspect CloudWatch alarms, EventBridge rules, AWS Elemental alerts, metrics, logs, and resource details. Selecting a resource node can open its service details page. Some MediaLive channels and MediaPackage endpoints can show thumbnail previews when available. A preview is a useful diagnostic clue, not proof that playback succeeds for viewers. AWS: Using workflow monitor signal maps
Set alarms for the workflow, not a generic threshold
An alarm template specifies a target resource and CloudWatch metric, statistic, comparison operator, threshold, period, number of datapoints, and treatment of missing data. Set those values around the normal operating range and the impact of the failure you want to catch. A MediaConnect disconnection alarm is an AWS example, not a universal threshold for every stream. Short periods and low datapoint counts may detect issues sooner but can be noisy; longer windows can reduce transient alerts while delaying detection. Decide explicitly how missing data should affect the alarm, since a gap can mean either a monitoring problem or a workflow problem. Trace the live path from ingest through delivery
When a viewer reports a problem, use the signal map to identify connected resources, then follow the signals owned by each service. Match metric dimensions and protocol applicability to the actual workflow; a metric that does not apply to a resource or output protocol cannot diagnose it.
| Workflow layer | Useful signals | What they help distinguish |
|---|---|---|
| Transport and ingest: MediaConnect | Flow, source, and output health metrics; source bitrate and total packets received in the console for a connected source | Whether an upstream source is sending and whether the flow or downstream output is healthy |
| Encoding and channel operation: MediaLive | Channel metrics, alerts, state events, logs, and API activity records | Channel, input, output, or pipeline-related problems |
| Packaging and origin: MediaPackage | Quality metrics such as ChannelMQCS and ChannelMQCSSequence; egress/request metrics and dimensions | Packaging quality versus manifest or segment request failures, including affected endpoint or track |
| Delivery and playback: CloudFront, S3, and player-side checks as applicable | Resource signals in Workflow Monitor plus checks appropriate to the delivery architecture | Whether an issue appears beyond packaging; a signal map alone does not establish successful viewer playback |
Monitor MediaConnect transport and source health
MediaConnect publishes CloudWatch metrics for flow health, source health, and outputs. Its guide says most metrics can be accessed with periods as short as one second; Gateway metrics require at least one minute. These are service-specific metric-period details, not a guarantee of end-to-end detection latency. AWS: Monitoring AWS Elemental MediaConnect with Amazon CloudWatch metrics

Check a connected source
For a connected source, use the console’s source bitrate and total packets received to see whether media is arriving. If the source is disconnected, check first that the upstream source is sending, then verify the flow source configuration, including allowlist CIDR and protocol settings. AWS: Monitoring the health of a MediaConnect source
Choose output metrics by protocol
Do not treat output metrics as interchangeable. For example, ConnectedOutputs applies to Zixi or SRT outputs, and MediaConnect documents retransmission metrics for SRT or MediaLive outputs. Confirm that the selected metric is applicable to the specific protocol and connection being monitored before interpreting an absent or abnormal value.

Monitor MediaLive encoding and channel operation
MediaLive monitoring includes the service console, CloudWatch metrics, CloudWatch Events/EventBridge events, CloudWatch Logs, and CloudTrail records for API activity. Its metric categories include global, input, MQCS, output, and pipeline-locking measures. Choose the category and metric based on the failure mode: for example, an input-arrival question calls for input signals, while an output issue calls for output-side evidence. AWS states that MediaLive CloudWatch metrics are retained for 15 months; the accessed guide does not state a publication year. AWS: Monitoring activity in AWS Elemental MediaLive and AWS: Monitoring channels using Amazon CloudWatch metrics
Use events as notifications, not as the only health check
MediaLive can emit channel or multiplex state information and alerts through events that can be routed with event rules, for example to notifications. AWS cautions: “Note that events are emitted on a best-effort basis.” Pair event notifications with CloudWatch metric alarms and service checks rather than treating event delivery as guaranteed. Monitor MediaPackage quality and requests
MediaPackage v2 publishes live-content CloudWatch metrics in the AWS/MediaPackage namespace every minute or sooner. Its guide describes ChannelMQCS and ChannelMQCSSequence for quality, alongside egress and request measures. Dimensions can isolate a channel, endpoint, request type (manifest or segment), status-code group, or track type (video, audio, subtitle). Use these dimensions to separate a request failure from a quality concern and narrow whether a particular endpoint or track is affected. AWS documents a 15-month retention period for MediaPackage statistics; the accessed guide does not state a publication year. AWS: Monitoring AWS Elemental MediaPackage with Amazon CloudWatch metrics – v2
MediaPackage’s wider monitoring options also include CloudTrail for API-call auditing, access logging, and EventBridge events. Follow the documentation for the resource model in use: the v2 guide describes channel groups and origin endpoints, while older MediaPackage documentation uses channels and endpoints. Diagnose by the first failing layer
- Confirm the symptom and scope. Determine whether the report affects one viewer, one rendition or track, one endpoint, or the whole stream. A player-side check matters because AWS resource health alone does not prove successful playback.
- Start at the source and transport. In MediaConnect, check source connection state, bitrate, and packets received. If disconnected, verify upstream transmission and source settings such as allowlist CIDR and protocol configuration.
- Check channel operation. In MediaLive, inspect relevant input, output, global, MQCS, or pipeline-locking metrics, plus channel state, alerts, and logs. Use events as one notification source, not the sole evidence.
- Check packaging and requests. In MediaPackage, compare quality metrics with request or egress metrics, then use endpoint, request-type, status-code, and track-type dimensions to narrow the fault.
- Continue to delivery and playback. Inspect relevant CloudFront or S3 resources in the map and use architecture-appropriate delivery and player checks. Do not infer viewer success merely because upstream nodes appear healthy.
Make alerting useful and control monitoring costs
Compare signals along four practical dimensions: which part of the path owns the signal, how frequently it is available, what exactly it means and which protocols or resources it applies to, and how the alarm behaves when data is missing. MediaConnect may offer one-second periods for many metrics, while MediaPackage live metrics are published every minute or sooner. Those different service behaviors are not directly comparable universal latency guarantees.
Workflow Monitor has no direct charge according to AWS, but deploying monitoring creates CloudWatch and EventBridge resources, stores CloudFormation templates in an S3 bucket, and may generate MediaPackage preview data transfer charges. Check current CloudWatch, EventBridge, S3, and MediaPackage pricing for the region and design you plan to use before enabling monitoring. AWS: Monitoring AWS media services with workflow monitor
