Monitor a YouTube live stream by retrieving its liveStream resource and checking two separate signals: status.streamStatus tells you whether YouTube is receiving the feed, while status.healthStatus summarizes the configuration health assessment. When health is not optimal, inspect configurationIssues[] and its issue details rather than treating an active stream as proof that everything is fine.
Understand which resource to monitor
YouTube models the event viewers watch and the audio-video feed sent to YouTube as separate resources. A liveBroadcast represents the event; a liveStream represents the feed. The broadcast is bound to a stream, so identify that relationship before monitoring the stream’s status. See the YouTube Live Streaming API overview and the LiveBroadcasts reference.
The LiveStreams resource reference describes health information as something that can be used to “identify, diagnose, and resolve streaming problems.” In an operator dashboard or alerting process, keep ingestion state, health assessment, diagnostic issues, and assessment recency distinct.
Read the stream’s status fields
| Signal | What it tells you | Values or details |
|---|---|---|
status.streamStatus |
Whether YouTube is receiving stream data and the stream’s ingestion state. | active, created, error, inactive, or ready. |
status.healthStatus.status |
YouTube’s separate summary of stream health. | good, ok, bad, or noData. |
status.healthStatus.configurationIssues[] |
Diagnostic entries explaining detected issues. | Each issue includes a type, severity, reason, and detailed description. |
status.healthStatus.lastUpdateTimeSeconds |
When YouTube last updated its health assessment. | Unix timestamp in seconds. |
Do not collapse ingestion and health into one state
active means YouTube is receiving data; it does not mean the health assessment is issue-free. Report both fields. For example, a monitor can show that a stream is active while separately flagging that its health is only ok or bad.

Interpret the health summary by severity
good: no issues at warning severity or worse.ok: no error-severity issues. Warning-level issues may still exist, so inspect the issue list.bad: one or more error-severity issues exist.noData: YouTube’s backend has no health information.
The documented issue severities are info, warning, and error. Informational issues have no adverse performance effect; warnings indicate performance is not optimal; an error means the video cannot be broadcast to viewers. Use the individual issue details to understand what the summary means for this stream.
Build a practical monitoring workflow
- Identify the broadcast. Find the
liveBroadcastfor the event your application is monitoring. - Find its bound stream. Use the broadcast’s stream binding to identify the associated
liveStream. The broadcast describes the event; the stream is the feed whose ingestion and health you need to inspect. - Retrieve the liveStream resource. Request the stream resource with the status information your application needs, then read
status.streamStatusandstatus.healthStatus. - Present separate results. Show the ingestion state and health summary independently. Do not label
activeas healthy or issue-free by itself. - Explain health findings. When the health summary is
okorbad, or when issues otherwise need attention, inspect each entry inconfigurationIssues[]. Surface its type, severity, reason, and description so an operator can choose a relevant fix. - Show assessment recency. Convert
lastUpdateTimeSecondsfrom Unix seconds for display, and indicate when YouTube last updated its assessment. A health result is easier to interpret when its age is visible.
The API references cited here define the fields and states, but do not establish a recommended polling cadence or production quota budget. Choose polling and alert behavior using the current quota and authorization requirements for your application; do not infer a universal interval from a stream lifecycle example.

Use issue details to diagnose problems
The Configuration Issues reference explains issue types and their suggested corrective context. Treat type as the key for consulting that reference, and preserve the accompanying severity, reason, and detailed description in logs or operator views instead of reducing every issue to a generic warning.
Example: video ingestion starvation
YouTube documents videoIngestionStarved as insufficient incoming video to maintain smooth streaming. Viewers may experience buffering. When this issue appears, investigate the upstream video feed and whether it is arriving consistently; use the issue’s description and the official issue reference to guide the specific diagnosis.

Keep broadcast preview separate from API health
A broadcast’s monitorStream is a broadcaster-facing preview mechanism for reviewing event content. It is not the same thing as liveStream.status.healthStatus, and previewing the broadcast does not replace reading the stream resource’s status fields. See the LiveBroadcasts reference.
The Life of a Broadcast guide says to confirm that the bound stream’s streamStatus is active before transitioning the broadcast to testing. Its lifecycle example notes that a testing transition may take several seconds or up to a minute; that is not a universal monitoring interval.
