Steam’s built-in library manager is the safest way to move an installed game to another drive without normally downloading it again. On the Windows desktop client, add a library on the destination drive, open Steam → Settings → Storage, select the source drive and game, then choose Move. Keep the original data until the moved copy launches successfully.
Quick answer
- Open Steam → Settings → Storage.
- Click + and create or select a Steam Library folder on the destination drive.
- Select the drive containing the game.
- Select the game and click Move.
- Choose the destination library, confirm, and wait for Steam to finish.
Steam transfers the recognized installation rather than uninstalling it. Validation, an update, missing files, or corruption can still cause some downloading. The controls and labels can vary slightly between Steam client builds. Steam’s current instructions are documented at Steam Support.
Before moving a game
- Confirm the destination drive is connected, writable, and has enough free space.
- Keep Steam open for the normal in-client move; do not shut down Windows or disconnect the drive during transfer.
- Do not drag the game folder in File Explorer while Steam is running.
- Back up important saves if the game does not use Steam Cloud.
- Leave the source copy untouched until Steam recognizes the destination and the game launches.
The documented Windows default game location is C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon, but your library may be elsewhere.
Add another Steam Library
- Open Steam and choose Steam → Settings.
- Open Storage.
- Click the + button near the top of Storage Manager.
- Choose the destination drive, then create or select a Steam Library folder.
You do not need to manually build the traditional default path. A normal folder added through Storage is sufficient. Once it exists, you can use it for this move and future installations.

Method 1: Move the game from Storage
- Go to Steam → Settings → Storage.
- Select the drive that currently contains the game.
- Select the game (you can select multiple games if the destination has room).
- Click Move.
- Choose the destination Steam Library and confirm.
- Wait for the transfer to complete, then launch the game from your Library.
The game should remain in your Library, and Steam should show its install location on the new library. A small update or validation may occur at first launch.
Method 2: Move it from the game’s Properties
- Open Library and right-click the game.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Choose Move Install Folder….
- Select the destination library and confirm.

Set the new drive for future installations
Adding a library and moving existing games are separate actions. In Settings → Storage, add the new library, select it, and use the client’s default-location control. Steam’s exact label can change; the durable rule is to select the intended library in Storage before installing a new game. Existing games do not move automatically.

If Steam reports an error or the game will not launch, right-click it in Library, choose Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. Steam compares the local files and reacquires damaged or missing data. Its guidance is at Steam Support.

If Steam says the game is uninstalled
- Reconnect the destination drive and confirm it has the same drive letter.
- In Settings → Storage, check that the library path is listed.
- Confirm the game folder is inside that library’s
steamappscommondirectory. - Restart Steam and re-add the library if necessary.
- If recognition still fails, start installing the same game to that library, pause shortly after Steam detects existing files, and inspect whether it has adopted them. Stop if it does not; use a backup or reinstall rather than deleting data.
This last technique is practical recovery, not the primary documented workflow. A changed drive letter, missing appmanifest_*.acf metadata, permissions, filesystem errors, or an interrupted write can all make a valid folder appear uninstalled. Steam warns that forcibly terminating it while writing can damage library information: Steam Support.
If the game will not launch
- Restart Steam and run file verification.
- Check whether the game uses EA, Ubisoft, Rockstar, Microsoft, or another separate launcher.
- Run any included secondary installers, such as DirectX, PhysX, or Visual C++ components.
- Check antivirus or ransomware protection for a block on the new folder.
- Update Windows and graphics drivers if the failure is broader than this game.
- Confirm the drive remains mounted at the expected path.

What moves—and what may not
Save files
Installation files and saves are different. Steam Cloud synchronizes only supported games. Developers choose save locations; third-party saves may be under C:Users<Windows user name>DocumentsMy Games, but that is not universal. Check the game’s documentation or PCGamingWiki before deleting the old drive.

Workshop data is generally associated with the Steam library, but manually installed mods may be in the game folder, Documents, AppData, or a mod manager’s directory. Back up mod profiles and test them after the move.

However, to play current-gen games (PS5 / Xbox Series X|S), you must copy them to the console's internal SSD first. The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.
Configuration and launchers
Settings can live in Documents, AppDataLocal, AppDataRoaming, or a third-party launcher directory. Moving a Steam folder is not a universal migration for every file related to a game.
Moving the entire Steam installation
Use this only when you need to relocate Steam itself; moving individual games is safer. Steam’s documented Windows installation folder is commonly C:Program Files (x86)Steam.
- Confirm your Steam login name and password and that the account email is current.
- Exit Steam completely.
- Back up the
steamappsfolder. - In the old Steam folder, leave
steamapps,userdata, andsteam.exe; move the remaining Steam folder to a location such asD:GamesSteam. - Launch
steam.exefrom the new location and sign in. - Verify the installed games.
Without the steamapps backup, a failed move may require reinstalling games. If the simple move fails, exit Steam, move steamapps temporarily to the desktop, uninstall Steam, reinstall it in the desired location, put steamapps back, then sign in and verify the games. An SSD primarily improves loading and sometimes asset streaming; it is not a guaranteed frame-rate upgrade. Use a reliable, locally mounted filesystem that Windows and Steam can write consistently. Linux, macOS, and Steam Deck users should verify platform-specific paths, permissions, and compatibility tools rather than applying Windows paths directly. Moving a folder to another computer is a separate migration involving account login, library recognition, compatibility, and possibly missing downloads.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will moving a Steam game delete my saves?
Not necessarily. Saves may be in Steam Cloud or separate Documents/AppData locations, so check the individual game and back up non-cloud saves before removing the old drive.
Do I need to redownload the game?
Normally no, when Steam recognizes the existing library. Validation, updates, missing files, or corruption can still require downloads.
Can I move several games at once?
Yes. Select multiple games in Storage Manager, provided the destination has enough free space.
Can I move a Steam game to an external SSD?
Steam can use an external library, but keep the SSD connected and expect performance to depend on the USB connection and enclosure. Steam specifically cautions against external hard drives.

Can I move a game to another computer?
That is a migration, not a same-PC drive move. Add the library on the second computer, sign in, and expect compatibility checks or downloads for missing files.
Will achievements carry over?
Achievements are tied to your Steam account, so they are not stored solely in the game folder; offline or game-specific exceptions can complicate synchronization.
Should I move Steam itself or only the games?
Move only the games unless you specifically need Steam’s program files relocated; the full-installation procedure requires a backup and more recovery work.
