To move a YouTube 24/7 stream off a spare PC, move the job that creates and sends the video—not the YouTube destination. Configure a cloud encoder or streaming service with the intended YouTube stream URL and key, test its video, audio, recovery and continued operation, then stop the PC encoder. The right setup depends on whether you loop prerecorded videos, run a full encoder workflow, or use a managed media pipeline.
First identify what the spare PC does
Before choosing a cloud service, note how the existing stream is made. The migration differs if the PC loops uploaded videos, runs OBS scenes and overlays, receives a camera or other live source, or simply forwards a feed. A cloud service that plays prerecorded files is not a drop-in replacement for a camera capture workflow or an interactive OBS production.
- Prerecorded loop: You need the video files or playlist available to the cloud service and a way to send the resulting feed to YouTube.
- Scenes, overlays or mixing: You need an encoder environment capable of reproducing those elements, such as a cloud computer running the software you already use.
- Camera or other live input: Plan how that physical source reaches the cloud. Moving the encoder alone does not move a camera or capture device.
- Existing feed forwarding: Identify the input protocol and credentials, then confirm the cloud workflow accepts them.
Choose the cloud operating model
These options have different responsibilities and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Specialist service for prerecorded video
YouTube’s verified encoder guide lists Gyre and describes it as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos. YouTube also notes that listed encoders are third-party products, not made by YouTube. Check Gyre’s current features, pricing and suitability before committing.

Cloud computer for an existing encoder workflow
A cloud computer can be conceptually close to the spare PC: install and configure the encoder, make the media and settings available, and arrange for the process to start and recover as needed. You remain responsible for operating the machine and software. The official guidance cited here does not establish a provider-specific virtual-machine recipe, so verify the chosen provider’s current machine, networking and recovery instructions rather than assuming a standard image or command.
Managed media pipelines
A managed workflow can include input, encoding or transcoding, packaging or origin, and delivery to viewers. AWS describes Elemental MediaLive as cloud-based live video processing; its broader architecture can combine MediaLive, a packaging/origin service and CloudFront. Google Cloud Live Stream API accepts RTMP or SRT encoder input, transcodes to HLS or DASH, and supports primary and backup inputs; outputs are saved to Cloud Storage, which can be configured with Media CDN. These are configurable media pipelines, not necessarily a one-click replacement for a single YouTube contribution feed. Check current pricing and regional availability before designing around a service.

Keep the YouTube destination and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and select the intended stream. Use its displayed stream URL and stream key in the cloud encoder or service. YouTube describes stream keys as the encoder’s password and address; treat the key as a secret and do not expose it in public configurations or screenshots. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room.
- Use the exact ingest URL shown for that stream. If your encoder supports RTMPS, select the lock icon in Live Control Room to reveal the RTMPS URL and use that exact address. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL; the ordinary RTMP URL is displayed by default.
- Keep the intended stream settings and destination consistent during the move. YouTube allows stream settings to be reused, but the cloud encoder still needs the correct URL, key, input and output configuration.
Cut over with a test, not a guess
- Configure the cloud side before stopping the PC. Make the loop files, playlist or live input available, configure the encoder output and enter the YouTube URL and key.
- Send a test feed. Check the Live Control Room preview for the right picture and sound, then check the public or unlisted watch page and a mobile device. Confirm the audience-facing output, not only the encoder’s local preview.
- Check network headroom. YouTube recommends keeping total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth with 20% room. For primary and backup feeds, account for both plus 20%. This applies to the cloud encoder’s contribution link to YouTube and any separate source or backup links.
- Test the failure path. If you configured backup input or failover, follow YouTube’s operational guidance: stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet and confirm the player rolls over to the backup. Check that the stream remains accessible from channel/watch pages and mobile.
- Test persistence after disconnecting. Close your control session and verify the cloud process keeps running. This is an operational check, not a guarantee that any cloud host or encoder will stay online without supervision.
- Watch output quality over a meaningful interval. Monitor audio and video and check any local archive growth used by your workflow. Once the cloud feed is confirmed, stop the PC’s encoder so two encoders are not unintentionally competing for the same stream.
Plan continuity, recordings and costs separately
Being online is not the same as being resilient
A cloud host does not by itself ensure that source files remain available, the encoder restarts after a fault, credentials remain valid, or viewers receive uninterrupted playback. Decide which failures matter and test the recovery path. AWS says standard MediaLive channels use two processing pipelines in different Availability Zones, while single-pipeline channels use one; redundancy changes the architecture and cost.
Do not assume a 24-hour YouTube archive
YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish how a continuous 24/7 broadcast will be archived as a complete video. If full-program retention matters, verify YouTube’s current behavior and arrange a separate recording and storage path.

Estimate the whole cloud bill
Count always-on compute or media-processing runtime, input and output, packaging or origin, viewer data transfer or CDN delivery, storage, and any redundancy. AWS says MediaLive channels incur charges while running even when inputs receive no content and outputs produce none. Its planning page gives an assumption-dependent example of about $3,838.69 for 100 viewers across 200 monthly hours of 1080p events, comprising $904.69 for encoding/packaging and $2,934.00 for distribution. The same page estimates $69.74 for a one-hour 540p event with 1,000 viewers and $1,505.60 for a one-hour 1080p event with 10,000 viewers. These are AWS examples, not quotes for your channel; the estimates depend on the page’s assumptions and geography, so recalculate for your actual workflow.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I move a camera-based stream to a prerecorded-video service?
No. A prerecorded-video service plays uploaded media; a camera workflow needs a way to get the live camera input to the cloud encoder.
Will YouTube save my whole 24/7 stream as one video?
YouTube’s stated automatic-archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours, not a full 24-hour broadcast. Arrange separate recording and storage if complete retention is required.
