You can move live streaming to the cloud without replacing your cameras or local production workflow. Keep producing in OBS or another encoder, then send its output to a cloud ingest service; the service can handle encoding, packaging, recording, and delivery. The right design depends on which stages you want to offload, how much latency and redundancy you need, and how you expect costs to scale.

What “moving to the cloud” means

A live stream has distinct stages: production (cameras, microphones, graphics, and scene switching), ingest (sending the encoded feed to a service), encoding or transcoding, packaging and origin, recording, and delivery to viewers. Cloud migration means choosing which of those stages to move—not necessarily moving production itself.

Before choosing a service, write down your current encoder and destinations, expected audience size and geography, required glass-to-glass latency, recording needs, and how much interruption your event can tolerate. Those requirements determine whether a managed service or a more configurable architecture makes sense.

Choose an operating model

Model How it works Trade-off
Managed ingest-to-delivery service Send RTMPS or SRT from production software to a cloud live input; the service handles processing and playback delivery. Less infrastructure to operate and a shorter route to a player, with less control over the underlying components. Cloudflare documents this model in its Stream live video guide.
Cloud-managed building blocks Configure separate ingest, encoding, packaging/origin, and CDN services. More control and resilience options, but more configuration and operational responsibility. AWS describes a MediaLive → MediaPackage → CloudFront workflow in its live streaming architecture overview.
Interactive, subsecond workflow Use a workflow such as WebRTC when near-conversational latency is essential. Potentially suitable for interaction, but AWS cautions that stateful WebRTC approaches do not scale as effectively for one-to-many distribution. See its live streaming scenario guidance.

Compare options using the same assumptions: latency, concurrent viewers and geography, redundancy, supported ingest protocols and codecs, recording and playback requirements, operational expertise, and total usage cost.

Map the signal path

Managed service

Your camera and production software remain local. The encoder sends one feed to a cloud live input; the service processes it and provides a player or streaming formats for your site or app. Confirm exactly what the selected service handles, including recording and playback, rather than assuming every managed input includes the same workflow.

Component architecture

A larger design commonly runs ingest → encoding → packaging/origin → CDN → viewers. Redundant feeds or regions can improve resilience, but each added component creates configuration, monitoring, and cost obligations. AWS’s reference architecture documents a MediaLive, MediaPackage, and CloudFront pattern.

Configure the encoder and verify the full path

The exact interface depends on the provider. Cloudflare’s OBS walkthrough is one vendor-specific example, not a universal recipe. Its official starting point is First Live Stream with OBS.

  1. Create a cloud live input. In the provider’s dashboard, create an input and identify its supported protocol and ingest endpoint. Copy the private stream key; treat it like a password, share it only with authorized operators, and rotate or revoke it if exposed. Cloudflare documents key rotation and credential revocation in its live stream setup guide.
  2. Enter the endpoint in your encoder. In Cloudflare’s OBS example, set the OBS service to Custom and enter the RTMPS URL and key supplied for the live input. Other providers may use different labels, protocols, or connection modes.
  3. Match input settings to the service. Cloudflare documents H.264 video and AAC audio input, closed GOPs, and recommends CBR when possible. Its guidance says creator bitrate is typically well under 12 Mbps, adjusted for motion and frame rate, and recommends a keyframe/GOP interval from 2 to 8 seconds. That range is provider-specific: shorter GOPs can lower latency but reduce encoding efficiency; longer GOPs improve efficiency but increase latency. Check the chosen provider’s current requirements rather than treating these figures as universal settings.
  4. Set reconnect behavior. Confirm the encoder retries after disconnection. Cloudflare says OBS reconnects automatically; FFmpeg may need custom configuration. The Cloudflare setup documentation also says clients must reconnect after a disconnection.
  5. Run a test stream. Add a test source, start streaming, and confirm the provider reports the input as connected and its preview works. Then test the actual viewer playback path, including audio and latency, before relying on it for an event.

Plan for reliability, latency, and scale

Redundancy

For a high-importance event, decide what failures you need to withstand and whether redundant ingest is worth the added cost and complexity. AWS recommends considering ingest in at least two Availability Zones using diverse network paths; its reference solution supports two feeds and primary/secondary processing. This is an architecture option, not a requirement for every creator.

Viewer delivery

AWS guidance says an origin may serve tens or hundreds of viewers but recommends a CDN to scale beyond a handful. Treat that as architectural guidance, not a universal viewer threshold: actual capacity depends on configuration, bitrate, and workload.

Latency

Measure latency in the complete path, not just at ingest. If subsecond interaction is a hard requirement, AWS recommends considering WebRTC for video-conference-like applications; for one-to-many distribution, weigh its scaling trade-offs against your audience and interaction needs.

Estimate cost from the workload

Price comparisons only mean something when the event and delivery assumptions match. Estimate event duration, concurrent viewers and average viewing time, recording retention, output profiles and bitrates, viewer geography, redundancy, and whether the channel runs continuously.

Cloudflare’s pricing page, accessed October 3, 2026, lists delivery at $1 per 1,000 minutes delivered and storage capacity at $5 per month per 1,000 minutes of capacity; it says ingress and encoding are free and bandwidth is included in delivery. Its example calculates that two viewers watching for 30 minutes produce 60 delivered minutes, or $0.06. These are Cloudflare’s published rates and example, not a general cloud-streaming price. Verify current charges on its pricing page.

AWS says costs for its reference solution vary with encoding profile, bitrate, and viewer count. Its event-oriented solution can be deployed for an event and deleted afterward, but actual spend depends on configuration and usage. See the AWS architecture overview.

Migrate in stages

  1. Choose one stream or a low-risk event as the pilot, and define acceptable latency and failure behavior.
  2. Create the cloud input and configure the encoder with its endpoint, key, protocol, and supported settings.
  3. Test privately or as an unlisted stream. Check input status, viewer playback, audio, latency, and reconnect behavior.
  4. Compare the output and operational experience with your current workflow; adjust settings based on the selected provider’s requirements.
  5. Keep a fallback path for an important event until the cloud workflow has been proven in your own environment.

Troubleshooting common migration problems

  • The cloud input never connects: Check that the endpoint and key match the live input, that OBS is set to the correct service or custom endpoint, and that you selected a protocol and mode the provider accepts.
  • The service connects but playback fails: Confirm the provider reports an active input, then test the actual player or playback format. Ingest connection alone does not prove the delivery path is working.
  • Video is unstable or buffers: Check bitrate against the provider’s ingest guidance and available upload capacity. Cloudflare recommends CBR when possible and says its typical creator bitrate is well under 12 Mbps, varying with motion and frame rate; do not apply that recommendation automatically to another provider.
  • Latency is higher than expected: Review the complete playback path and GOP interval. Under Cloudflare’s guidance, a shorter GOP within its recommended 2–8 second range can reduce latency, with an efficiency trade-off; confirm provider-specific settings.
  • The stream does not resume after a drop: Verify encoder retry behavior and the provider’s reconnection requirements. Cloudflare says OBS reconnects automatically, while FFmpeg may need custom configuration.
  • A stream key may be exposed: Rotate or revoke it in the provider dashboard and update the authorized encoder. Do not leave the old credential in shared notes or public settings.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube channel that should loop uploaded videos around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate, simpler option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream camera footage. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on, and if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card; monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
