Its free plan allows two channels to be active at once, but includes Restream branding and restricts some destinations. Check the current plan rules for the exact platforms you want before setting up.
What you need to multistream for free
- OBS Studio to capture and encode your game, camera, microphone, and other sources.
- A Restream account to receive the OBS stream and relay it to YouTube and a second destination.
- Eligible, connected destination accounts. YouTube must be ready for live streaming, and each other platform has its own eligibility and simultaneous-broadcast rules.
- A stable upload connection capable of sending one stream at the quality you choose. This relay workflow sends one encoded stream from OBS rather than a separate local output for each destination.
Restream says its free plan permits two active channels at once. It also says a free account can add 30 channels, but only two can be enabled simultaneously; the limit relevant to one broadcast is the two active channels. The free stream carries Restream branding, described as a small watermark and/or a link in the stream description. Facebook Pages, Groups, and custom RTMP destinations require a paid plan, according to Restream’s plan information. Check the current terms before relying on a destination being free. Restream plans
How to set up OBS, Restream, and YouTube
- Make sure YouTube live streaming is enabled. Restream’s setup guide says YouTube requires phone-number verification and a 24-hour wait before a first stream, and says the connecting user must own the YouTube channel. Requirements can depend on the account, so check YouTube’s current eligibility information and confirm you can start a live stream in YouTube Studio before the event. Restream’s YouTube setup guide
- Connect your destinations in Restream. Sign in or create an account, authorize YouTube, and connect one other destination. Confirm that the second platform is allowed on the free plan; connecting more channels does not mean they can all receive the same free broadcast at once. Restream integrations
- Connect OBS to Restream. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Choose Restream if it is available in the service list and authorize your account, or select a custom streaming service and enter the server and stream key Restream provides. Treat the stream key as a password: do not show it on screen or share it. Restream documents both account connection and stream-key setup. Restream’s OBS instructions
- Choose which connected channels receive the broadcast. In Restream, enable YouTube and the one other destination. Check each platform’s stream title, privacy, category, and other broadcast details before going live.
- Set OBS output to fit YouTube and your connection. Restream’s YouTube guide recommends H.264 video, CBR rate control, a two-second keyframe interval (four seconds maximum), and a video bitrate between 3,000 and 40,000 Kbps depending on resolution and frame rate. It lists resolutions from 240p to 2160p and frame rates up to 60 FPS. For audio, it lists AAC or MP3 at 128 Kbps stereo. These are Restream’s recommendations, not universal settings for every destination; confirm current guidance for both platforms and choose a bitrate your sustained upload can support. Restream’s YouTube settings guidance
- Test before broadcasting publicly. When possible, make a private or unlisted test, check game and microphone audio, picture quality, OBS dropped frames, and whether both destinations show the stream as receiving signal. If one platform has a separate test mode, use it. Then set the intended privacy and start the public broadcast from OBS, following Restream’s documented workflow.
Choose settings without overloading your connection
Resolution and frame rate affect how much detail and motion the stream carries; bitrate determines how much data OBS sends each second. Higher settings can improve image quality, but only if your connection can sustain the upload and your destinations accept the format. Restream’s stated range of 3,000–40,000 Kbps spans many output combinations, so it is not a single recommended bitrate for every gaming stream.
- Use H.264 and CBR, with a two-second keyframe interval, as the baseline in Restream’s YouTube guide.
- Pick the resolution and frame rate based on the game, your encoder capacity, your upload connection, and both platforms’ current requirements.
- Leave upload headroom rather than setting OBS’s bitrate at the full measured upload speed; other devices and network fluctuations can reduce what is available during a live broadcast.
- Check the OBS stream status during your test. If frames are being dropped because of network congestion, reduce bitrate or output quality and test again.
Restream says its relay does not require additional bandwidth per added destination and avoids encoding multiple copies locally. Those are Restream’s claims about its relay service. Sending separate outputs locally is a different setup and can have different encoder, CPU, and upload demands; the documented sources here do not establish the current requirements or reliability of local multi-output plugins. Check destination rules before you go live
Simultaneous-streaming eligibility is platform-specific. YouTube advises creators to consult the relevant platform’s documentation when unsure about multistreaming rules. Check the rules for the second destination as well as its account eligibility, and verify what content or music you have permission to broadcast. YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder
Restream’s free-plan allowance does not override a destination’s own rules. If you need Facebook Pages, Groups, a custom RTMP destination, or more than two active channels, Restream says those uses require a paid plan. Restream plans

Common multistream problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube is unavailable as a destination | The channel may not be eligible or live streaming may not yet be enabled. | Confirm YouTube live-stream eligibility and account verification. Restream’s guide says first-time YouTube streaming involves phone verification and a 24-hour wait; check your account’s current status in YouTube Studio. |
| OBS is connected, but a destination does not receive the stream | The channel may not be enabled in Restream, authorization may have expired, or the destination may not be permitted on the plan. | In Restream, check the destination connection and that it is selected for this broadcast. Reauthorize if prompted and verify plan eligibility. |
| OBS reports dropped frames or the stream stutters | The chosen bitrate may exceed stable upload capacity, or the connection may be fluctuating. | Reduce the bitrate or resolution, check the network connection, and repeat a private or unlisted test before going public. |
| Video looks poor or playback is unstable | The bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or keyframe interval may not suit the output or destination. | Compare OBS output with Restream’s YouTube guidance and the second platform’s current requirements. Keep the keyframe interval at two seconds where compatible, and verify the destination’s status during a test. |
| Viewers hear no microphone or game audio | The wrong OBS audio source may be active, muted, or routed incorrectly. | Check OBS’s audio mixer and meters while speaking and playing a sound, then listen to the test broadcast on each destination. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep looping uploaded videos 24/7 rather than broadcast a live gaming session from OBS, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service for that specific job. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud continues the stream with your computer off. It is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
