To multistream to Instagram Live and YouTube, send one encoder feed to both destinations through a hosted relay such as Restream: connect Instagram Live Producer with its current stream key, authorize your YouTube channel, then start streaming in OBS. The encoder starting is not the final Instagram step—you must wait for its preview and click Go Live in Instagram. Before setting up, confirm that Live Producer is available for your account and that YouTube live streaming is enabled.
Choose how to send one production to both platforms
Hosted relay: the simplest documented workflow
A relay service receives a single feed from OBS or another encoder and forwards it to the connected destinations. Restream documents adding Instagram and YouTube as channels, with Instagram connected by stream key and YouTube connected through account authorization. This centralizes destination setup and avoids configuring separate outputs in OBS. See Restream’s Instagram integration overview and its setup guides below.
Direct multi-output from streaming software
Direct multi-output sends separate outputs from your computer to each platform, without a hosted relay. OBS’s compatibility page lists a Multiple RTMP Outputs plugin for OBS Studio 28 on specified Windows and macOS variants, but that compatibility information is dated August 31, 2022; it is not a current installation or support guide. Check whether the plugin supports your installed OBS version and operating system before relying on it. The hosted workflow is the more fully documented option here. Check account access before scheduling
Instagram Live Producer
Restream’s instructions dated April 22, 2026 say that a Professional Instagram account is required and that only public accounts with at least 1,000 followers can go live. The guide also says Instagram Live is limited to one hour, the stream key must be refreshed for each broadcast, and the Live Video tab must remain open. These are Restream’s published instructions, not independently confirmed Meta policy; Live Producer access and eligibility can vary by account. YouTube live streaming
Restream’s YouTube guide says live streaming must be enabled, first-time channel enablement requires phone verification followed by a 24-hour wait, and the connected Google account must be the channel owner rather than a manager or editor. It also says YouTube has no stream-duration limit, but archives only streams shorter than 12 hours. Verify access and ownership well ahead of the event. Restream: Stream to YouTube
Connect Instagram and YouTube to Restream
- Prepare Instagram: On desktop, open Instagram, choose Create, then Live video. Set the title and audience and copy the stream key shown in Live Producer. Keep this browser tab open. Use a fresh key for each broadcast, as Restream’s Instagram guide instructs.
- Add Instagram in Restream: Add Instagram as a destination and paste the stream key into the connection fields. Follow the current Restream prompts for any additional destination settings.
- Authorize YouTube: Add YouTube as another destination and connect the channel through Google account authorization. Select the channel you intend to broadcast on and ensure the authorized account is its owner.
- Prepare the encoder: In OBS or another supported encoder, configure the outgoing connection using the server and stream details supplied by Restream. Select both connected destinations in the relay. Restream’s guide covers encoder workflows with OBS and other major streaming software; exact interface labels may vary by software version.
- Start and launch: Start streaming from the encoder. Once the preview appears in Instagram Live Producer, click Go Live there. Starting OBS or the relay alone does not publish the Instagram broadcast.

Choose settings that work for both destinations
There is no single ideal output setting for both platforms: Instagram’s recommendations favor a vertical frame, while YouTube’s encoder guidance covers several codecs and configurations. Decide whether Instagram-first vertical framing or a layout that remains legible on both services better suits the show. The cited sources do not establish an automatic per-destination reframing workflow, so do not assume a relay will independently recompose the picture.
Instagram settings listed by Restream
- Aspect ratio: 9:16 is recommended, but not required.
- Resolution: 720 × 1280 is recommended.
- Frame rate: 30 fps is recommended; 60 fps is the stated maximum.
- Video bitrate: 2,250–6,000 Kbps.
- Audio: 44.1 kHz stereo, with a maximum audio bitrate of 256 Kbps.

YouTube encoder considerations
- Connection: YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP.
- Codec: YouTube’s official guidance includes H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 options.
- Frame rate: The guidance covers up to 60 fps.
- Keyframes: Use a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR).
Choose a configuration the encoder, relay and both destinations support; do not treat one platform’s bitrate recommendation as universal for the other. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guidance for codec-specific recommendations. Google explains that RTMPS tunnels RTMP through SSL and that the protocol, server, application path and port must all be correct: RTMPS ingestion documentation.
End the broadcast in the right order
- End the live from Instagram Live Producer first.
- After Instagram has ended the broadcast, stop the encoder or relay.
Restream warns that stopping only in the encoder or Restream can leave the Instagram video frozen for four minutes. Keep the Live Video tab open throughout the broadcast as well.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
- Instagram Live Producer or a stream key is missing: Check that you are using Instagram on desktop and that the account meets the eligibility requirements described in Restream’s guide. Account access can vary; confirm the option is present before scheduling.
- Instagram does not connect or the key is rejected: Recheck that the key was copied accurately, generate a fresh key for this broadcast, and update the Instagram destination in Restream. Restream says keys must be refreshed for each new stream.
- Instagram preview does not appear: Confirm the encoder is sending to the configured relay and the correct destination is enabled. Keep the Live Video tab open; after the preview arrives, click Go Live in Instagram.
- YouTube destination cannot be authorized: Confirm live streaming is enabled and that the Google account used for authorization is the channel owner, not only a manager or editor. If this is the channel’s first live stream, allow for the phone verification and 24-hour wait Restream describes.
- One or both destinations fail to receive video: Check that the relay’s encoder server and stream details are entered correctly, and confirm the selected protocol and settings are supported by the receiving destination. For YouTube RTMPS, the server, application path and port must match the supplied connection details.
- Picture is cropped or difficult to read: Review the composition at the intended aspect ratio. A vertical 9:16 layout suits the Instagram recommendation, but important text and gameplay may need a layout designed to remain legible on both platforms.
- Instagram remains frozen after the show: End the live in Instagram before stopping the encoder or relay; reversing that order is the freeze condition Restream documents.
