For more consistent volume from video to video, adjust the files individually with a consistent loudness-measuring workflow before streaming, then listen through the complete playlist in OBS. Use OBS’s Gain, Compressor, and Limiter filters for level adjustments and peak protection—not as substitutes for matching each clip.
Set up the repeating playlist in OBS
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source and add the video files you want in the playlist. This source requires VLC; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
- Enable Loop Playlist in the source settings so OBS repeats the playlist. If you are looping just one file, use a regular Media Source and enable its Loop setting instead.
Looping controls what plays next. It does not make clips with different mixes or mastering sound equally loud.
Match the files before going live
For steadier perceived loudness, measure and adjust each video’s audio in an audio/video editor or other loudness-aware processor before adding the files to the OBS playlist. Use the same measurement method and target for every clip, and choose a target suited to the material and destination. The reviewed OBS and YouTube documentation does not establish an official YouTube Live LUFS target, so do not treat a particular LUFS number as a YouTube requirement.
This preparation takes more work than applying one live filter, but it lets you assess each clip on its own. OBS documents useful real-time level and dynamics filters; it does not describe VLC Video as analyzing each playlist item and automatically matching integrated loudness.

What OBS audio filters can—and cannot—do
- Gain: Raises or lowers a source’s level. It is a manual level adjustment, not automatic loudness matching between playlist items. See OBS’s filter guide.
- Compressor: Reduces peaks and can duck one source when another is active. It changes dynamics but does not set a shared loudness target for separate prerecorded videos.
- Limiter: Caps peaks at its configured threshold to help prevent clipping. OBS recommends placing the Limiter last in its filter chain. A limiter can catch peaks, but it does not make differently mastered clips equally loud. See OBS’s Limiter documentation.
A single Gain setting may help if all files are consistently too quiet or too loud, but it shifts them together. A Compressor or Limiter may reduce peaks without correcting the relative loudness difference between one clip and the next.
Listen through the whole sequence and check for clipping
- Monitor audio early in the signal chain and again as it reaches OBS. Listen to the transitions between videos as well as representative quiet and loud sections; monitoring headphones can help you hear abrupt changes.
- Watch the OBS mixer while the playlist plays. Its main meter displays peak level; the moving black indicator is intended to better reflect loudness. The meter is not an integrated LUFS readout. OBS explains dBFS as a digital full-scale reference and warns that output reaching or exceeding 0 dBFS can clip. See OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide and Audio Mixer Technical Details.
- Keep the streamed output below 0 dBFS. If transient peaks risk crossing the ceiling, use a Limiter at the end of its filter chain and set its threshold appropriately. Then listen again: avoiding clipping does not by itself make the clips sound equally loud.
Why YouTube playback controls are not a live-stream fix
YouTube’s Stable volume is a viewer-side playback feature that balances quiet and loud parts, and YouTube says it is not available for every video. YouTube also documents optional audio enhancements and creator controls for future uploads. None guarantees that every viewer will hear an OBS live playlist with consistent clip-to-clip volume. YouTube’s upload encoding guidance recommends a 48 kHz sample rate and specifies audio codecs, but that guidance is not a loudness target for a live OBS playlist. See YouTube’s encoding settings.
