Normalize the podcast files before they enter the continuous playlist, then configure YouTube’s live encoder separately. Measure episodes for perceived loudness and true peak, choose one consistent editorial target, process and audition the results, and test the actual stream. YouTube’s cited live-encoder guidance does not prescribe a podcast LUFS target: EBU R 128’s −23 LUFS recommendation is a broadcast reference, not a YouTube rule.
What normalization does—and what it does not do
Loudness normalization helps bring episodes to a more consistent perceived level. It is not the same as limiting the highest sample peak: two files with similar peaks can sound very different in loudness. FFmpeg’s loudnorm filter supports EBU R 128 loudness normalization and controls for integrated loudness (I), loudness range (LRA), and maximum true peak (TP). FFmpeg loudnorm documentation
Normalization does not remove recording noise, repair clipping already baked into a file, balance speakers automatically, or guarantee that an episode sounds good. It can also change dynamics, so listen to the result rather than relying on meter readings alone.
What LUFS should podcast audio be for a YouTube livestream?
YouTube’s cited live encoder guide specifies transmission settings, not an integrated-loudness target for podcast programmes. Do not treat −14, −16, or another number as an official YouTube requirement on this basis. Pick a consistent target suited to your source material, speech-and-music balance, desired dynamics, and other destinations, then judge it in a test stream.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
EBU R 128 version 5.0 recommends average programme loudness of −23 LUFS and use of Loudness Range and Maximum True Peak Level descriptors in its broadcast context. That is useful as a reference point, but it is not evidence of a YouTube podcast livestream requirement. EBU R 128, version 5.0 (November 2023)
A repeatable workflow for episode files
- Measure a representative set. Include full episodes or meaningful representative sections from the quietest and loudest material, and inspect episode transitions. Compare programme loudness and true peak rather than trying to make every brief moment equally loud.
- Choose a target for the library. Use a consistent editorial target across episodes. Decide how much natural variation and dynamics to preserve; there is no universally established best podcast target for YouTube Live.
- Normalize and export separate stream copies. Keep original masters. For prerecorded files, FFmpeg supports single-pass normalization and a file-based two-pass workflow. Double-pass processing can use measurements from the source; single-pass processing is also available when a second analysis pass is impractical. See the filter documentation for options and behavior.
- Listen to the output. Check representative quiet and loud passages, speech emphasis, music, silence, and transitions. If a file’s dynamics are wide, processing may alter how it sounds. FFmpeg notes that linear normalization can fall back to dynamic mode when the measured conditions cannot satisfy requested limits.
- Assemble the continuous playlist. Feed the processed copies to your chosen playback system in the intended order. The loudness workflow does not itself provide a playlist, continuous playback, or stream-recovery system.
- Test the live feed and monitor it. Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview, listen at a normal playback level, and watch for clipping, unexpected silence, abrupt level changes, looping problems, or a dropped connection. YouTube advises testing with representative audio and video and monitoring the stream. YouTube live encoder tips · YouTube live streaming requirements

The −23 LUFS value follows the EBU broadcast recommendation, not a YouTube mandate; the LRA and true-peak values are example choices, not YouTube-prescribed podcast settings. Measure and audition the output. Filter availability and behavior depend on the FFmpeg version and build installed on your system.
Single-pass, two-pass, or real-time processing?
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Two-pass normalization of files | Prerecorded episodes that can be analyzed before streaming. | Allows source measurements to inform processing, but requires a separate analysis pass before export. |
| Single-pass normalization | Files or live inputs where a second pass is not practical. | FFmpeg supports it, but you still need to audition output and confirm that the resulting sound suits the programme. |
| Pre-normalized episode copies | A playlist-based 24/7 feed assembled from known recordings. | Lets you inspect and approve files before they enter the stream, but requires preparing the files and managing the playlist. |
| Real-time processing | A live signal that cannot be processed in advance. | Cannot use a second analysis pass on material that has not yet arrived; processing choices affect the sound as it goes out. |
FFmpeg documents single-pass normalization for livestreams and files, and double-pass support for files. The best fit depends on whether your source is prerecorded or live and how much time you have to assess it before broadcast.

Set YouTube Live audio encoding separately
Normalization controls programme loudness; encoder settings control how audio is sent to YouTube. For RTMP/RTMPS live streams, YouTube’s cited guidance accepts AAC or MP3 audio and recommends these advanced stereo settings:
- Sample rate: 44.1 kHz.
- Audio bitrate: 128 kbps stereo.
- Encoding: constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframe interval: two seconds recommended, not exceeding four seconds.
- Ingest protocol: RTMPS is recommended for encrypted transmission.
These are encoder and transport recommendations, not a loudness target. Consult YouTube’s current live encoder settings guide for the full specifications, which may change.

Operating a continuous stream: checks and common failures
Before relying on a 24/7 feed, test it with representative episodes and transitions. YouTube recommends keeping the outgoing bitrate within available upload bandwidth, allowing 20% headroom, testing before going live, checking the Live Control Room preview, and monitoring quality continuously. YouTube live encoder tips · YouTube live streaming requirements
- Episodes sound uneven: Recheck full-episode loudness and compare quiet and loud examples. Confirm that the same editorial target and processing approach are being applied; listen for source differences that normalization cannot fix.
- Audio distorts or sounds harsh: Inspect true-peak readings and listen for clipping already present in the recording. Normalization cannot restore clipped source audio; revisit the source or use a separate approved master.
- Speech or music sounds unnaturally compressed: Reconsider the target and dynamics settings, then audition again. Loudness consistency should not come at the expense of the programme’s natural delivery.
- The preview is silent or unexpectedly quiet: Check the playlist’s audio track, the exported file, and the live encoder’s selected audio source; verify by listening to the preview, not just by looking at settings.
- Playback stops, loops incorrectly, or disconnects: Check the playback system and connection, then confirm whether the stream has resumed in YouTube. The cited YouTube guidance does not specify a particular software stack, hosting provider, or guaranteed 24/7 recovery design.
- Upload instability affects the feed: Compare outgoing bitrate with available upload capacity and preserve the recommended headroom. Test under representative conditions and monitor the stream for drops.
