How to Normalize Podcast Audio Levels for a 24/7 YouTube Stream

Normalize podcast episodes before playout by matching integrated loudness, checking true peaks and listening to transitions. YouTube’s live encoder settings do not specify a LUFS target.

For a 24/7 podcast stream, normalize episodes before they enter the playlist whenever possible. Measure each programme’s integrated loudness in LUFS, adjust its gain toward a consistent editorial target, check true peaks, and audition episode transitions. A peak meter alone cannot tell you whether two full episodes will sound equally loud.

YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies audio delivery settings, not a LUFS target. EBU’s −23 LUFS recommendation is a broadcast reference—not a YouTube requirement—so choose a target for your distribution chain and verify it by listening to the actual stream.

What to measure: programme loudness and peaks

Integrated loudness describes the perceived level of a programme over time and is useful for comparing complete podcast episodes. True peak and digital clipping checks answer a different question: whether brief peaks may overload the digital signal or leave too little headroom for encoding. You need both checks; matching peak readings does not ensure episodes sound equally loud.

Use a loudness meter that reports integrated or programme loudness. OBS’s documented audio meter is peak-oriented: its VU display is an RMS reading over 300 ms, not an integrated loudness meter. Keep encoded output below 0 dBFS to avoid clipping. OBS audio mixer documentation

Which LUFS target should you use?

There is no LUFS target published on YouTube’s live encoder guidance. Its page covers delivery format and recommends testing similar audio while monitoring stream health; it does not promise live loudness normalization. YouTube Live encoder settings

The European Broadcasting Union’s EBU R 128 version 5.0 (November 2023) recommends average programme loudness of −23 LUFS and use of Loudness Range and Maximum True Peak Level descriptors. That is a standards-based broadcast reference, not a universal platform setting. EBU R 128

For streaming, EBU R 128 S2 version 3 (November 2023) recommends unchanged streaming at −23.0 LUFS as its baseline. It also describes an interim distribution range of −20.0 to −16.0 LUFS when metadata is not being used to manage device gain and a broadcaster wants to control dynamic treatment before streaming. This is conditional guidance, not a YouTube preset. Playback varies: a quiet room and a device with ample gain differ from a noisy setting or a phone with limited headroom, so no single number guarantees the same listener experience. EBU R 128 S2

If you choose either reference, document the target and its context, then apply it consistently across your episodes. Do not treat the higher range as a mandatory correction or push every programme toward a number without listening.

Normalize episodes before they go live

  1. Choose representative material. Gather the quietest and loudest episodes, plus recurring intros, ads, music beds and interstitials. Measure full programmes or representative segments rather than choosing a target from one isolated phrase.
  2. Measure integrated loudness. Use a meter that reports LUFS, and record each reading the same way. Do not substitute OBS’s peak meter for this measurement.
  3. Set an editorial target. Pick a consistent target appropriate to the actual distribution chain. If using an EBU reference, keep its standard and context attached to the figure rather than calling it a YouTube requirement.
  4. Adjust gain, then manage dynamics only as needed. Apply gain to bring programme loudness toward the chosen target. Use compression sparingly for substantial speech-level variation; use limiting to control true peaks when a gain change would otherwise leave inadequate headroom. Preserve natural emphasis and avoid processing that makes speech tiring or removes meaningful dynamics.
  5. Check the processed file. Measure true peak and check for clipping after gain and dynamics processing. Inspect the actual output that will enter the playlist, including silence, ads and music if they are part of the broadcast.
  6. Audition episode boundaries. Listen to the end of one episode and the start of the next. A consistent integrated reading does not guarantee a smooth transition, especially when one episode begins with quiet speech and another with a loud theme or ad.
  7. Test the encoded live stream. Send representative audio and video through the encoder and review the YouTube stream before relying on the unattended setup. YouTube recommends testing with activity similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health. Repeat the test after changing source gain, filters, playlist composition or encoder settings.

Offline normalization or live correction?

Approach What it helps with Trade-off
Normalize episodes offline Lets you measure and adjust each complete episode, inspect true peaks, and check transitions before broadcast. Requires preparation when episodes or playlist assets change; it is the more controllable choice when material is available in advance.
Correct loudness in real time Can smooth longer-term level differences when the stream is assembled live or offline preparation is impractical. Cannot predict what audio comes next and can mistakenly change intended dynamics; fast correction may produce pumping or audible level shifts.

The Audio Engineering Society describes a rolling integration period between 30 seconds and two minutes for active real-time loudness controllers. This is contextual guidance, not a mandated setting; longer periods usually sound more natural and create fewer audible artifacts. Listen for pumping, abrupt level changes and flattened speech dynamics. AES loudness normalization resource

Use YouTube’s audio delivery settings separately

For the cited YouTube Live encoder guidance, set audio to AAC or MP3, 44.1 kHz sample rate, and 128 Kbps stereo. These are transport settings, not a loudness target. Test with audio and video activity similar to the intended stream, then monitor stream health. YouTube Live encoder settings

Troubleshooting uneven or distorted episodes

  • Episodes have similar peaks but one sounds much quieter: Peak matching is not programme loudness matching. Measure integrated LUFS and adjust the episode’s gain toward your chosen target.
  • Speech clips after normalization: Gain may have pushed short peaks into clipping. Check true peak and the encoded output; reduce gain or use restrained peak limiting, then test again.
  • A loudness meter and OBS disagree: They may be measuring different things. OBS’s meter is peak-oriented and its VU display is short-term RMS, so use a dedicated integrated loudness meter for LUFS.
  • Volume rises and falls during a live episode: Real-time correction may be reacting to changing material. Use a longer rolling period within the AES contextual range, reduce processing strength, or prepare the episodes offline.
  • Each episode measures consistently but transitions still jar: Audition boundaries, including intros, ads and music beds. Programme averages do not capture every local contrast.
  • The stream sounds different from the local files: Test the actual encoded YouTube stream and monitor stream health. Recheck after any change to source gain, filters, playlist assets or encoder settings.
