Press Windows + G while your game or supported app is open. Windows should display the Xbox Game Bar overlay, where you can access capture, audio, performance and other widgets. Microsoft lists this as the Game Bar shortcut: Windows keyboard shortcuts.
Open Game Bar with the keyboard
- Start the game or app you want to use.
- Press Windows + G.
- Look for the Game Bar overlay and its widgets over the current window. If Windows asks whether the app is a game, confirm when appropriate.
- Press Windows + G again to hide the controls.
Microsoft describes the shortcut in the context of an open game, so test it with the intended game or app in the foreground rather than an empty desktop.
Open Game Bar with an Xbox controller
Connect or pair a compatible Xbox controller, then press its Xbox button. This works when Windows is configured to let the controller button open Game Bar. Third-party controllers, handhelds and vendor software may behave differently.

Enable Xbox Game Bar if it is disabled
The Settings labels can vary between Windows 11 releases. The search-based route is the most reliable:

- Press Windows + I to open Settings. Microsoft documents this shortcut in its Windows Settings guide.
- In Settings search, type xbox.
- Select the Xbox Game Bar setting.
- Turn on the option that enables Xbox Game Bar, including the option to open it with a controller if you want that method.
- Return to your game or app and press Windows + G.
You can also usually reach the setting through Start > Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar, although the wording and placement may differ by build.
What appears when Game Bar opens?
Game Bar is a Windows overlay, not the separate Xbox app. Its available widgets and layout can vary, but commonly include:

- Capture: screenshots and game or app recording.
- Audio: output, application volume and microphone controls.
- Performance: information such as resource usage.
- Widgets and settings: controls for arranging and configuring the overlay.
- Xbox-related features: availability depends on your account, Windows version and installed components.
Useful Game Bar shortcuts

Microsoft documents these capture shortcuts and says recordings normally appear as MP4 files in VideosCaptures; screenshots use the Captures folder as PNG files. Libraries or storage settings may have been changed on an individual PC. See Microsoft’s Xbox Game Bar accessibility guide.

Fix Game Bar when Windows + G does nothing
- Enable the feature. Open Settings, search for xbox, select the Game Bar setting and turn it on.
- Test with the target app active. Bring the game or supported app to the foreground and try the shortcut again.
- Look for shortcut conflicts. Keyboard remappers, gaming-keyboard utilities, overlay programs, remote-desktop sessions and manufacturer hotkey tools can intercept Windows-key combinations.
- Update Game Bar. Open Microsoft Store, go to its library or updates area, install any Xbox Game Bar update, restart Windows and test again. Microsoft lists the Store as the update route: keyboard shortcuts support.
- Repair the app. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Xbox Game Bar, open its More options menu, choose Advanced options, and select Repair.
- Reset only if necessary. From the same Advanced options page, choose Reset if Repair fails. Resetting can remove app-specific settings.
- Restart Windows. This can clear a stuck overlay process or complete a pending Store update.
- Check for organizational restrictions. A work or school administrator may block gaming features, Store updates or Xbox services. Contact the administrator instead of changing registry or policy settings.
If your keyboard has no Windows key
- Use the Settings search method to enable Game Bar, then launch it through the available app interface.
- Enable the controller option and press an Xbox controller’s Xbox button.
- Use the Windows on-screen keyboard if the physical key is defective.
- Consider remapping the shortcut only as an advanced workaround, after checking for conflicts.
Game Bar versus Xbox mode
Game Bar is the overlay opened with Windows + G. Xbox mode is a separate, controller-oriented full-screen Windows gaming experience; it is not required to open Game Bar. Microsoft says Xbox mode requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or later and is available only in supported markets: Windows gaming full-screen experience.

When another recorder is a better fit
Game Bar is convenient for basic clips, screenshots, audio controls and performance widgets. Recording behavior can vary with window type, protected content, full-screen handling, permissions, anti-cheat systems and other overlays. If you need full desktop capture, multiple sources, webcam scenes or advanced streaming controls, use a dedicated recorder such as OBS Studio instead.
