On Windows 11, “opening game files” can mean four different things: finding a game’s installation folder, launching its .exe, reading a file such as .ini or .json, or locating save files. The safest default is to find the installation folder through the game’s official launcher, show file extensions, back up anything you plan to edit, and launch the game through its launcher rather than directly from a random executable.
Before you begin
- Close the game and its launcher before editing or replacing files.
- Back up saves and configuration files first.
- Do not delete, rename, or replace unknown files.
- Run downloaded executables only when you trust their source. Scan suspicious downloads with Windows Security or another reputable security tool.
- Use the official launcher for installation, updates, verification, and repair whenever possible.
Browsing a folder is usually harmless. Editing configuration files can change or break settings, while deleting installation files can cause crashes, verification failures, or a complete redownload.
1. Open File Explorer
Press Windows + E, or select File Explorer from the taskbar or Start menu. File Explorer is Windows 11’s built-in tool for finding, opening, and managing files and folders. See Microsoft’s File Explorer guide.
2. Show extensions and hidden items
In File Explorer, select View > Show > File name extensions. This lets you distinguish Game.exe, settings.ini, archive.pak, and library.dll.

If a folder you expect is missing, select View > Show > Hidden items. Hidden does not automatically mean dangerous, but avoid changing hidden system folders casually. Microsoft documents both options in its file-extension guidance and File Explorer documentation.
3. Find the installation folder through the launcher
The launcher is more reliable than guessing a path because games can be installed on another drive or inside a custom library.
Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the game and open its properties or installed-files area.
- Choose the current equivalent of Browse local files.

Epic Games Store
Epic games are commonly installed under:
C:Program FilesEpic GamesUsers can choose another drive or folder. Open the Epic Games Launcher, select the game in Library, and use its management options to locate, verify, or repair the installation. Epic’s installation-directory support page and Library management guide cover these functions.
Xbox app and Microsoft Store
Xbox PC and Microsoft Store games do not always behave like traditional desktop installations. Some use protected locations such as:

C:Program FilesWindowsAppsWindowsApps is intentionally protected. Do not routinely take ownership of it or change its permissions; doing so can interfere with app updates and permissions. Use the Xbox app or Microsoft Store’s supported install, move, repair, reset, and storage controls instead. The exact access model depends on the game, Windows configuration, and installation method. Standalone installers
For a game installed from a disc, download, or publisher installer, check the shortcut’s location: right-click the desktop or Start-menu shortcut, select Properties, and inspect the Target or Start in fields. Common folders such as C:Program Files, C:Program Files (x86), C:Games, and a custom library are only possibilities, not universal paths.
4. Search manually if the launcher does not show the path
- In File Explorer, select This PC or the drive where games are likely installed.
- Search for the game title or a distinctive part of its name.
- Check likely folders such as
SteamLibrary,XboxGames,Games, and custom library folders. - Sort results by Type, Date modified, or Size.
Microsoft’s File Explorer search guidance recommends beginning from a specific folder, drive, or This PC. Searching a likely game folder for *.exe is more useful than searching the entire system drive.

If you know the folder, PowerShell can list its executables:
Get-ChildItem -Path "D:GamesGame Name" -Filter *.exe -Recurse -FileDo not run this against all of C: unless necessary; it can be slow, return unrelated programs, and generate access errors.
5. Identify and launch the correct executable
A game’s main executable is usually named after the game and located in the main folder or a subfolder such as BinariesWin64. A folder might look like this:

└── ConfigThese names are examples, not a required layout. A folder can also contain uninstallers, updaters, crash reporters, anti-cheat components, dedicated servers, and helper programs.
- Right-click the likely executable and select Properties.
- Open the Details tab and check the product name and publisher.
- Use the official launcher to start the game whenever possible.
Directly double-clicking a game .exe may bypass authentication, cloud-save synchronization, launch parameters, DRM, anti-cheat initialization, or the required working directory. The file may also be a helper rather than the game itself. Running as administrator is not a general fix; use it only for a specific troubleshooting instruction from the publisher or a documented error. Epic describes administrator mode as a troubleshooting step in some cases, not a default requirement. See its executable troubleshooting guidance.
