What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Start by identifying what is going wrong: low average frame rate, uneven frame pacing, shader-compilation stutter, long loading times, or delayed world and texture streaming. There is no universal open-world settings preset. Record the game, resolution, graphics settings and hardware, then compare one change at a time in the same repeatable scene or activity.
Diagnose the symptom before changing settings
A tweak only helps if it addresses the resource or process limiting the game. Microsoft’s Windows Gaming and Graphics Technologies Developer Relations group notes that “The vast majority of games are limited by CPU performance on systems with high-performance graphics processing units (GPUs).” That is a technical observation about Windows titles, not a diagnosis of every PC: high resolution can instead push a system into a GPU limit, while limited physical memory may require lower detail settings.
- Low average FPS: test whether the CPU or GPU is the likely constraint before lowering image quality.
- Uneven frame pacing or brief pauses: consider shader compilation or other game-specific causes, rather than assuming the average FPS is the problem.
- Long loads or delayed world data: investigate storage and the game’s streaming behavior; a storage change is not automatically an FPS fix.
Use a repeatable location, route or activity to compare results. Change one setting, repeat the same situation, and note both the performance effect and any visual cost. This makes it easier to reverse a change that does not help.
Match graphics changes to the likely limit
If GPU demand appears to be the constraint, test resolution or demanding visual effects in the game’s own graphics menu. If the system is CPU-limited, lowering resolution may have little effect because it does not address the cause. Memory constraints can also make high detail settings impractical. The relevant settings and their effects vary by game, so treat each adjustment as a test rather than a guaranteed optimization.

On NVIDIA systems, NVIDIA’s Control Panel reference recommends leaving antialiasing application-controlled for games with built-in antialiasing options. It also notes that higher anisotropic-filtering values improve image quality while reducing performance. Avoid forcing driver overrides without a specific reason; compare them with the game’s own controls.
Check Windows’ per-game graphics settings
Choose the high-performance GPU when the PC has more than one
- In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Select the game in the app list. If it is not listed, add it using the available browse option.
- Open the game’s options, choose High performance where appropriate, save the preference, and restart the game.
This preference is relevant to systems with multiple GPUs; it is not a general FPS switch for every PC.

Try windowed-game optimizations only for eligible games
Windows 11’s Optimizations for windowed games applies to eligible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless mode. For compatible titles, Windows transitions from legacy blt-model presentation to flip-model, which Microsoft says reduces frame latency and can enable features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate on supported setups. The option is per app, and the game must be restarted after a change.
If Auto HDR has enabled the optimization automatically, turning the optimization off may require turning off Auto HDR first. This feature does not apply to every game or fullscreen mode. Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling and variable refresh rate are also dependent on supported hardware, drivers and, for VRR, a compatible display; they are eligibility-dependent features, not universal fixes.

Understand shader stutter and first-launch behavior
Games may compile shaders on the player’s device at launch or during gameplay. Microsoft says this can mean longer load times, shader-compilation stutter and higher power use. Advanced Shader Delivery prepares shaders ahead of time and delivers compiled results, but it requires supported Windows, GPU and driver support, as well as storefront integration. Microsoft’s September 15, 2026 Xbox developer article says the feature is currently available for games played in the Xbox app on PC; it should not be assumed to work across all games or storefronts.
On NVIDIA systems, the driver shader cache stores compiled shaders so later runs do not need to compile them again. NVIDIA says installing a new driver deletes this cache, so a game may stutter on its first run afterward. Its guidance is to choose a cache size that can accommodate the games you play without exceeding available disk space. These details are specific to NVIDIA’s documented driver behavior.

Consider storage for loading and world streaming—not guaranteed FPS
Microsoft’s gaming PC setup guide listing associates DirectStorage with data being pulled from an NVMe SSD and faster loading or transitions in detailed worlds. That supports a conditional storage recommendation, not a promise of higher frame rates: benefits depend on the PC, the game and whether it uses the relevant storage path.
Before buying or replacing a drive, check the PC’s interface and slot compatibility, physical dimensions where relevant, available capacity, operating-system support and the game’s requirements. Test reversible settings first if your symptom is stutter or low FPS rather than slow loading.

What not to treat as a player setting
Microsoft’s technical guidance recommends approximately 300 or fewer draw-batch submissions per frame for current-generation hardware to reduce command-buffer processing bottlenecks. This is advice for developers implementing rendering, not a frame-rate target or a setting PC players can tune in a game’s menu.
