How to Optimize Windows 11 for Gaming: A Safe, Measurable Guide

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most Windows 11 gamers, the best first steps are straightforward: update Windows and the correct drivers, make sure each game uses the intended GPU, enable Game Mode, set the display to its proper refresh rate, and remove unnecessary background recording. Test changes one at a time. There is no universal Windows switch that guarantees higher FPS, and disabling security features or running debloat scripts can introduce risks without fixing the real bottleneck.

Use this sequence to improve frame pacing, latency, loading, or image quality according to what is actually limiting your PC. Menu labels can vary slightly by Windows release, language, and device.

Measure your current performance first

A tweak is only useful if it improves the problem you care about. Higher average FPS can still feel worse if frame times become erratic, so record more than one number before making changes.

  1. Press Win + R, enter winver, and note the Windows version and build.
  2. Record your CPU, GPU, driver version, RAM, storage type, monitor resolution, and refresh rate. dxdiag opens the DirectX Diagnostic Tool; msinfo32 shows system information.
  3. Choose a repeatable scene in the game and play it for several minutes. Note average FPS, 1% lows if available, frame-time consistency, GPU use, CPU use per core, temperatures, clock speeds, VRAM, and system-memory use.
  4. Use the Xbox Game Bar performance widget (Win + G), Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc), a GPU vendor overlay, or a frame-time tool such as PresentMon. A particular utility is not required; use the same measurement method before and after.
  5. Change one setting at a time, then relaunch the game or reboot if needed. Keep a short before-and-after log.

If GPU use stays high while frame rate is low, graphics settings or GPU capability may be the limit. If one or more CPU cores are saturated while GPU use is low, the game may be CPU-limited. High temperatures followed by falling clock speeds point toward thermal throttling. These are clues, not absolute diagnoses: game engines and scenes vary.

Update Windows and drivers carefully

Install pending Windows updates, then get graphics drivers from the GPU maker or, on a laptop, start with the laptop manufacturer’s validated driver. Update chipset or platform drivers from the system maker when appropriate, and reboot before comparing performance.

A newer driver is not automatically better for every game; regressions can happen. Laptop users should be especially cautious with generic drivers if the OEM driver is needed for brightness, sleep, Optimus, MUX switching, or external displays. Use a clean installation or a driver-removal utility only to resolve a suspected corrupted or conflicting installation, not as routine maintenance. Update BIOS/UEFI only for a clear stability, compatibility, security, or performance reason.

Apply the high-value Windows settings

Turn on Game Mode

Go to Settings → Gaming → Game Mode and switch it on. Windows intends Game Mode to prioritize gaming activity and reduce interference from background work; it is not a guaranteed FPS multiplier. If one game stutters or behaves worse, compare performance with the setting off for that specific troubleshooting session.

Microsoft’s overview of Windows 11 gaming features is at Gaming on Windows 11.

Assign the right GPU to each game

This matters most on laptops and systems with both integrated and discrete graphics. Open Settings → System → Display → Graphics. Under custom options for apps, add or select the game executable, choose Options, select High performance to prefer the discrete GPU or Power saving to prefer integrated graphics, then choose Save. Relaunch the game.

If a launcher starts a separate game executable, assign the actual game executable too. A laptop MUX setting or an external display wired to a particular GPU can affect which adapter is used, and some Store games have unusual installation paths. Microsoft documents the current graphics options at Optimizations for windowed games in Windows 11.

Enable Optimizations for windowed games

In Settings → System → Display → Graphics → Default settings, turn on Optimizations for windowed games. Microsoft says this applies to compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running windowed or borderless-windowed. It uses a newer flip-model presentation path intended to reduce presentation latency and enable supported features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate. It is not a universal FPS boost.

Restart the game and compare its borderless and exclusive-fullscreen modes if both are available. If a particular game develops flicker, stutter, HDR trouble, or overlay conflicts, open Settings → System → Display → Graphics, select that game, choose Options, turn the optimization off for it, save, and restart. If Auto HDR is enabled, disable Auto HDR first before turning this optimization off, as Microsoft notes the two settings are linked.

Benchmark Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling

In Settings → System → Display → Graphics → Change default graphics settings, find Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS), if available. Microsoft describes it as moving much of GPU scheduling work from the CPU to dedicated scheduling hardware. Whether that helps depends on the GPU, driver, and game.

Test with it on and off in the games that matter to you, rebooting if Windows requests it. Keep the setting that gives better frame-time consistency and stability. If you see crashes, hitching, capture problems, driver timeouts, or worse 1% lows, switch it back. Microsoft explains the setting in its DirectX graphics settings overview.

Set up the display for the game you play

Use the monitor’s intended refresh rate

Open Settings → System → Display → Advanced display and select the monitor’s native refresh rate under Choose a refresh rate. Also check the monitor’s own menu and the GPU control panel: the connection, resolution, and selected display mode can affect which refresh rates are available.

Choose VRR and frame caps deliberately

If the monitor and GPU support FreeSync, G-SYNC, or Adaptive-Sync, enable the matching variable refresh rate (VRR) options in Windows, the monitor menu, and the GPU control panel as applicable. VRR lets a supported display adapt its refresh to the game’s frame rate. If the image flickers near the low end of the VRR range, try a suitable in-game or driver frame cap. Microsoft describes VRR in its graphics settings overview.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Competitive players often value stable frame times and low latency over extra visual effects; single-player players may prefer a frame cap with higher visual quality. The best cap and V-Sync combination depends on the game, display, and latency features available, so compare the actual feel and frame-time results rather than applying a universal formula.

Treat HDR as an image-quality choice

HDR is not an FPS optimization. Turn on Windows HDR only if the monitor supports it well; a display labeled HDR can still produce dim, washed-out, or otherwise disappointing results. Auto HDR can convert supported SDR games using DirectX 11 or later for an HDR display. Enable it globally or per game, then compare against the game’s native SDR presentation. Turn it off for titles with incorrect brightness, crushed blacks, excessive saturation, UI artifacts, or capture problems. Microsoft’s Windows 11 gaming page describes Auto HDR support and feature qualifications.

Reduce background work without debloating Windows

Disable capture you do not use

If you do not need instant replay, open Settings → Gaming → Captures and turn off background recording or Record what happened. Recording can use system resources and compete with other capture software for the hardware encoder. Xbox Game Bar remains available with Win + G for widgets and controls; Microsoft describes it on its gaming page.

Trim startup apps and overlays selectively

Disable unnecessary startup programs under Settings → Apps → Startup or Task Manager → Startup apps. Before a test, close unneeded browsers, launchers, cloud-sync jobs, downloads, and monitoring utilities. If you suspect an overlay is causing stutter, anti-cheat trouble, HDR issues, or a frame-generation conflict, disable overlays one at a time—Xbox Game Bar, Discord, NVIDIA, AMD, Steam, or peripheral/RGB software—and test again. Do not remove useful overlays automatically; some provide recording, latency information, or frame caps.

Keep storage healthy

A nearly full system drive can complicate updates and leave too little working space. Check Settings → System → Storage → Cleanup recommendations and review what Windows proposes before deleting files. Microsoft’s guidance on freeing drive space covers Storage Sense and cleanup options.

Install demanding modern games on an SSD where practical. Do not manually defragment an SSD or indiscriminately clear shader caches: a game may rebuild shaders on the next launch, causing temporary stutter. DirectStorage is not a general Windows switch or an FPS boost. It requires a game built to use it, an NVMe SSD, a DirectX 12-capable GPU with Shader Model 6.0 support, and the Standard NVM Express Controller driver, according to Microsoft’s gaming documentation.

Choose a power setup that can sustain performance

For laptops and handheld PCs

Play plugged into AC power when possible. Check Settings → System → Power & battery → Power mode and choose the highest-performance option available while plugged in if you need it. Also check the laptop maker’s utility for performance mode, fan behavior, or MUX graphics mode.

More aggressive power settings increase heat, fan noise, and battery use; on a thin laptop, heat can eventually reduce sustained clocks and FPS. Compare performance after a 20–30 minute session, not only during the first minute. A balanced setting may perform better over a long session if the most aggressive mode causes throttling.

For desktops

Modern Windows and GPU drivers generally manage performance states adequately. Do not expect Ultimate Performance or obscure advanced power-plan changes to improve games automatically; they can raise idle power use. Use powercfg /getactivescheme to inspect the active plan or powercfg /list to list plans, but change advanced settings only to investigate a specific power-management problem.

Check hardware configuration when software tweaks are not enough

These are firmware and hardware checks, not Windows toggles. On a desktop, verify the GPU is in the motherboard’s intended full-bandwidth slot and check whether memory is running in dual-channel mode. If supported, XMP or EXPO can run RAM at its rated profile, while Resizable BAR or AMD Smart Access Memory may help in some system and game combinations. None has a guaranteed performance gain across games.

Memory profiles are overclocking settings and can cause crashes, boot loops, or instability. If enabling one causes trouble, return to BIOS defaults or use the motherboard maker’s clear-CMOS recovery procedure. Update BIOS only for a relevant reason, and check the maker’s instructions before changing firmware settings. On laptops, memory may be soldered and BIOS options limited.

Should you disable Memory Integrity or VBS?

For most players, no: leave Memory Integrity enabled. It is a Windows security feature that protects kernel-mode code using an isolated virtual environment. Microsoft says it is enabled by default on clean Windows 11 installations on compatible hardware and documents its purpose and driver compatibility at Memory Integrity and VBS enablement. Performance impact varies; a universal FPS percentage for disabling it is not established.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Only consider a temporary test if a specific older driver or game has a compatibility issue or you have measured a repeatable performance problem and understand the security reduction. Record the original setting or create a restore point first. The path is Windows Security → Device security → Core isolation details → Memory integrity. Change it, reboot, and repeat the same benchmark; restore the original setting afterward unless resolving a confirmed compatibility problem.

To re-enable it, return to the same page, switch Memory Integrity on, and reboot. If Windows refuses, identify the incompatible driver and update or remove it rather than leaving protection disabled; Microsoft points to Applications and Service LogsMicrosoftWindowsCodeIntegrityOperational for relevant Code Integrity events.

When a change makes performance worse

Reverse only the most recent change first, then relaunch the game or reboot and retest. For a graphics regression, restore that app to Let Windows decide or undo its per-game override. For a driver problem that began immediately after an update, install a known stable driver or roll back where available. If an XMP/EXPO or Resizable BAR change makes the system unstable, restore BIOS defaults. Use System Restore or Windows recovery only after protecting important files and recording settings you may need.

  • Low FPS: Check the selected GPU, resolution, in-game graphics load, per-core CPU use, GPU utilization, and temperatures before changing Windows settings.
  • Stutter or poor 1% lows: Watch frame times, shader compilation, memory pressure, background capture, overlays, storage space, driver changes, and sustained temperatures.
  • Wrong GPU: Assign the actual game executable to High performance, then check the laptop’s MUX/OEM setting and the monitor connection.
  • Washed-out HDR or flicker: Compare native SDR, Auto HDR, and HDR-off behavior; test VRR and windowed-game optimizations per game.
  • Crashes after a driver update: Revert to a stable driver and test without overlays before changing unrelated Windows services or security settings.
  • Laptop performance falls over time: Check temperatures, cooling, AC power, and OEM performance mode; an initial FPS result may not reflect sustained performance.

Windows 11 gaming optimization checklist

  • Do first: Measure a repeatable baseline; update Windows and appropriate drivers; confirm the right GPU, power mode, refresh rate, and cooling; enable Game Mode.
  • Test per game or system: Optimizations for windowed games, HAGS, HDR/Auto HDR, VRR, frame caps, overlays, and GPU preference.
  • Check if hardware limits performance: Storage space and SSD use, RAM channel/profile, thermals, and supported firmware options.
  • Avoid: Random debloat scripts, registry cleaners, service-disabling lists, disabling Defender or Windows Update, timer-resolution folklore, and paid FPS boosters.
  • Use caution: Memory Integrity changes, BIOS updates, and RAM overclock profiles; keep a clear recovery route.
