There is no single best setting for every Mac or streaming platform.
Check that your Mac and OBS version are compatible
OBS lists an Intel or Apple Silicon processor and macOS 11 Big Sur or later as basic macOS requirements. That establishes compatibility, not the ability to stream a demanding game, scene, resolution, or frame rate smoothly. OBS notes that performance depends on the encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity. OBS system requirements
For a version-specific check, OBS’s macOS compatibility table dated July 29, 2026 lists OBS Studio 32.2.1 as the latest compatible release for macOS 13 through 26 on both Apple Silicon and Intel. Check the table for older macOS versions and consult it again before upgrading; compatibility can change with new releases. OBS macOS compatibility
Before changing settings, note your Mac model and processor, macOS and OBS versions, streaming destination, target resolution and frame rate, scene sources, and whether OBS is recording at the same time. This makes it easier to connect a symptom to the setting that may be causing it.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Reproduce the stream and inspect resource use
Run the actual scene you intend to stream, including representative gameplay or motion, overlays, browser sources, and audio. A light test scene may not reveal the load created by your live setup.
- Open Activity Monitor. Use the CPU view to observe user, system, and idle activity while the scene is running. Look for sustained load and processes consuming resources, rather than treating one CPU percentage as a pass-or-fail threshold.
- Check the Memory pane. Observe memory pressure, swap, and app memory during the same test. Apple describes Activity Monitor as a way to inspect resource use and find troublesome processes, but it does not specify one CPU or memory threshold that guarantees a clean stream. Apple: Activity Monitor
- Change only what the evidence points to. Close an unnecessary application if it is actually consuming resources or causing problems. If the Mac is struggling, test a lower output resolution or frame rate, or simplify demanding scene sources; then rerun the representative scene.
Choose an encoder available on your Mac
OBS generally recommends a compatible hardware encoder to reduce work on the CPU, but encoder availability and platform support vary by Mac architecture. Check the options in your installed OBS version under Settings → Output, and confirm that the streaming destination supports the selected codec and rate control. OBS hardware encoding

- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Apple Silicon: OBS documents Apple VideoToolbox streaming with H.264.
- Intel: OBS says VideoToolbox streaming is not supported for typical streaming services that require constant bitrate (CBR), and directs Intel Mac streamers to x264.
Do not assume every Mac shows identical encoder options, or that hardware encoding always produces the best quality at every bitrate. If you change encoder, test the result with your platform’s required settings and the scene you will actually stream.
Set output for the destination, not a universal preset
Use the streaming platform’s current recommendations as the authority. For YouTube, its current guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS, H.264 video, CBR, and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds (do not exceed 4 seconds). YouTube supports frame rates up to 60 fps. Its recommended H.264 bitrates include the examples below; these are platform recommendations, not guarantees or settings for every service. YouTube live encoder settings

Choose a quality your connection can sustain, and test before the event. Audio, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe settings should match the destination’s guidance rather than assumptions carried over from another platform.
Test upload capacity and connection stability
Run an upload-speed test and conduct a private or otherwise low-risk test stream with representative motion and audio. Compare the result with the bitrate you plan to send, and leave capacity for normal network use. A speed-test result alone does not establish that the connection will remain stable throughout a stream.

OBS is dropping frames. How can I fix this?
If OBS’s dropped-frames counter rises, OBS identifies an unstable connection to the destination server or a connection that cannot keep up with the selected bitrate as likely causes. This points first to the network path, not proof that the Mac’s CPU is too slow. Check connection stability and upload capacity; if needed, lower the bitrate or quality target to a level supported by the platform, then test again. OBS: Dropped frames
If the network counter is not rising but the stream still struggles, check Activity Monitor and the OBS scene and output load. A local rendering or encoding problem calls for reducing workload or changing to a supported encoder, rather than buying a network accessory.

If testing points to an unstable wireless connection and your network offers wired service, a USB-C to Gigabit Ethernet adapter may be worth considering for a compatible Mac without Ethernet. It is a conditional way to use a wired connection, not a fix for encoding or rendering overload.

Apple says High Power Mode allows higher fan speeds and may improve performance under very intensive workloads. Availability depends on Mac model and operating system; Apple documents it for selected MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and Mac Studio models. Treat it as a model-specific option to test if your Mac offers it and a representative stream suggests sustained workload or thermal limits—not as a requirement for streaming. Apple: High Power Mode
