For a smoother Windows 11 gaming setup, update Windows and the right drivers, confirm your monitor’s refresh rate, select the correct GPU for each game, and tune the game to the component that is limiting performance. Then measure the result. Game Mode is a sensible default; settings such as Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (HAGS), HDR, and overlays need system-by-system testing. No single Windows tweak reliably improves every game or every PC.
Start with a baseline
Before changing settings, record how the game performs now. Use its built-in benchmark if available; otherwise, replay the same area or route under the same conditions. Change one setting at a time so you can tell what helped.
- Average FPS and 1% lows, or a frame-time graph. A higher average can still feel worse if frame times become erratic.
- Resolution, graphics preset, display mode, and refresh rate.
- GPU utilization, CPU utilization by core if possible, and GPU and CPU temperatures.
- System RAM and GPU VRAM usage.
- Whether the game is fullscreen, borderless, or windowed, and whether the laptop is plugged in.
- Windows build and graphics-driver version.
NVIDIA’s FrameView guide describes capturing FPS, frame-time, utilization, and power data. A monitoring tool is optional; a repeatable comparison matters more than the tool.

Apply the low-risk Windows basics
Install Windows, chipset, and graphics updates
- Open Settings → Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- Check Settings → Windows Update → Advanced options → Optional updates for relevant drivers. Microsoft explains how Windows provides recommended hardware drivers.
- For a discrete GPU, check the maker’s official driver page: NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel’s download center. Use the package for your exact model and Windows version.
- On a gaming laptop, check the laptop maker’s support page for BIOS, chipset, graphics, and platform-specific drivers before replacing OEM drivers.
- Update the game through its launcher and note your existing driver version before a major change.
Windows Update is useful for general device updates, while GPU manufacturers may provide newer game fixes or features in their own packages. New drivers can also regress a particular game. If an update brings crashes, flicker, or worse performance, try Device Manager’s Roll Back Driver option if available, or reinstall the previous known-good package. Test with overlays and recording disabled before concluding the driver is at fault. A driver cannot remove a hardware bottleneck, thermal limit, or game-engine problem.

Turn on Game Mode
Go to Settings → Gaming → Game Mode and turn it on. Microsoft describes Game Mode as a setting intended to optimize system performance during gaming; it is a reasonable starting point, not a guaranteed FPS increase. If one game becomes unstable, compare it with Game Mode off and judge frame-time consistency as well as average FPS. See Microsoft’s overview of Windows gaming settings.
Set the intended display refresh rate
Open Settings → System → Display → Advanced display, select the correct monitor, and choose its intended refresh rate. A high-refresh display may default to 60 Hz. The monitor, GPU, cable, and port must all support the selected resolution and refresh rate.
If the display supports variable refresh rate (VRR), check its on-screen menu and the GPU control panel as well as Windows. Compatible technologies include AMD FreeSync, NVIDIA G-SYNC, and VESA Adaptive-Sync; availability and setup depend on the display and graphics hardware. Microsoft discusses VRR in its Windows Graphics settings overview. If VRR flickers, test another supported refresh range, cable, driver, or per-game setting.

Choose the high-performance GPU for each game
This is especially useful on a laptop or PC with integrated and discrete graphics. Open Settings → System → Display → Graphics, add the game if it is not listed, select it, choose Options, set High performance, then select Save. Restart the game. Windows also offers Let Windows decide and Power saving; the preference is per app. Microsoft documents these controls under Windows graphics optimizations.
If the game still uses the wrong GPU, add the game executable rather than only its launcher, check the GPU control panel, plug in the laptop, and check the manufacturer’s performance mode. Confirm GPU activity in Task Manager or a monitoring tool while the game is running.
Choose graphics features by game and symptom
Optimizations for windowed games
Windows’ Optimizations for windowed games feature is most relevant to compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running windowed or borderless. Microsoft says it moves supported games from the older blt presentation model to flip model, reducing presentation latency and enabling features such as Auto HDR and VRR on supported displays. It is not a universal FPS switch.

To enable it, go to Settings → System → Display → Graphics and turn it on under Default settings, then restart the game. To change it for one game, select that game under Custom options for apps, choose Options, change the setting, save, and restart. Auto HDR automatically enables this optimization; turn Auto HDR off first if you need to disable the optimization. If a compatible game develops flicker, capture trouble, changed latency, or instability, use the per-game option to compare on and off. Test HAGS rather than assuming it helps
Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling lets Windows offload much of GPU scheduling to dedicated GPU hardware, reducing CPU involvement in that scheduling path. It does not guarantee better performance in every game. Depending on the Windows build and hardware, find it at Settings → System → Display → Graphics → Change default graphics settings. If the option is present, change it, restart Windows, and repeat the same benchmark. Keep the setting that gives better frame-time consistency without crashes or capture problems; if it causes trouble, reverse the change. The setting may be absent on unsupported hardware or drivers. Microsoft describes the graphics settings in its DirectX overview.
Use Auto HDR only if the result looks better
Auto HDR is an image-presentation feature, not a dependable performance optimization. It requires a compatible HDR display; Windows and the monitor may both need HDR enabled. Compare it with SDR and the game’s native HDR, if offered. Conversion can look washed out or too dark, and can affect screenshots and capture. Auto HDR’s relationship with windowed-game optimizations is explained in Microsoft’s graphics feature guidance.
Check eligibility before trying Automatic Super Resolution
Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) is limited to supported devices, drivers, and games; it is not a setting available to every Windows 11 gaming PC. Check Microsoft’s current Auto SR requirements and controls. Where supported, compare image quality and frame pacing with the game’s own resolution scaling or DLSS, FSR, or XeSS. Avoid stacking upscalers and sharpening filters without testing.
Set power and background activity sensibly
Use Best performance when plugged in
On a desktop, or a laptop connected to AC power, open Settings → System → Power & battery → Power mode and select Best performance when maximum performance is the priority. Microsoft warns this uses more power; laptops may also run hotter and louder and drain the battery faster. If a laptop performs worse in this mode, it may be hitting a thermal or adapter power limit. Cooling, the OEM performance profile, or a stable frame cap may help more than another Windows tweak. See Microsoft’s Windows power settings guidance.

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, open Startup apps, and disable only apps that do not need to launch with Windows. For supported apps, check Settings → Apps → Installed apps → … → Advanced options and choose an appropriate background-permission setting, such as Never. On supported devices, background activity is also available through Settings → System → Power & battery → Battery usage → Manage background activity. Microsoft gives these approaches in its guidance on improving PC performance and managing background activity.

Look for actual contenders such as browser video, cloud synchronization, launcher updates, recording, streaming, virtual machines, RGB utilities, or unwanted software. Do not blindly disable Windows Security, GPU or audio services, networking, laptop hotkeys and fan controls, or Microsoft Store and Gaming Services components needed by Xbox PC games.
Isolate Game Bar, capture, and other overlays if there is a problem
If you do not record gameplay, disable background recording and capture features you do not use. When troubleshooting stutter, flicker, or input delay, test with Xbox Game Bar and third-party overlays turned off. Possible overlays include Steam, NVIDIA, AMD, Discord, and monitoring tools. They are not inherently harmful and have no fixed performance cost; isolate them one at a time, then re-enable only what you use. Optimize the game for its bottleneck
Windows settings cannot substitute for in-game tuning. Lowering resolution can create GPU headroom at the cost of image detail. A game’s DLSS, FSR, XeSS, or resolution-scaling option may improve performance; Quality modes generally preserve more detail than Performance or Ultra Performance modes. Frame generation can raise displayed FPS, but may add artifacts and does not necessarily reduce input latency.
Settings often associated with CPU load include view distance, crowd density, simulation, physics, vegetation, and background NPCs. Common GPU-heavy options include ray tracing, global illumination, shadows, volumetrics, reflections, ambient occlusion, and anti-aliasing. The actual cost varies by game engine, so change one setting and measure.
Frame caps and synchronization are also game- and display-dependent. Compare the in-game cap, VRR, V-SYNC, and any low-latency option available for your GPU and game. An even, stable frame rate can feel better than an uncapped rate that swings sharply; do not apply one universal sync recipe to every setup.

For gaming on a laptop, plug into the manufacturer-approved power adapter, select the OEM performance profile if available, and check that the game runs on the discrete GPU. Some laptops also provide a MUX switch or graphics mode that changes how the discrete GPU connects to the display; its availability, path, and trade-offs are model-specific, so use the laptop maker’s documentation.

Watch temperatures and clock speeds during a repeatable game run. Dust, restricted airflow, or thermal throttling can erase the benefit of a higher power mode. An external monitor connected to a particular port may be wired differently from the built-in screen on some laptops, so check the manufacturer’s port and GPU documentation if performance or GPU selection changes when docked. Lowering a frame cap can reduce heat and noise when battery life or sustained performance matters more than peak FPS.

Check storage when loading or streaming assets is the problem
Install frequently played games on an SSD where possible and leave adequate free space on the Windows and game drives. Storage upgrades are more likely to improve loading and asset streaming than average rendering FPS. Use Windows’ built-in Defragment and Optimize Drives rather than manually defragmenting an SSD as if it were a mechanical drive; Windows applies the appropriate optimization. Microsoft also describes Storage Sense and other maintenance options in its PC performance guidance.
DirectStorage can transfer game data more directly from NVMe storage to the GPU, but only games and hardware that support the technology can benefit. It is not a Windows toggle that accelerates every title. See Microsoft’s gaming PC guidance.
Troubleshoot by the symptom
Low FPS with steady frame times
Check utilization, per-core CPU load, temperatures, clock speeds, laptop power mode, and GPU selection. If the GPU is consistently busy, try a lower resolution or GPU-heavy settings. If one or more CPU cores are saturated, reduce settings that drive simulation, crowds, or view distance. Check for thermal or power throttling before changing unrelated Windows settings.
High average FPS with stutter
Use a frame-time graph and check for shader compilation, asset streaming, background work, recording or overlays, VRAM or RAM pressure, driver changes, and thermal throttling. Test overlays off, then compare HAGS and windowed-game optimizations one at a time. Compare fullscreen with borderless if the game allows it; neither is universally faster. Check whether the game or shader cache is being rebuilt repeatedly.

- Restart Windows and verify the game files in its launcher.
- Disable overlays and mods, then test again.
- Undo the most recent graphics setting or driver change.
- Compare HAGS and windowed-game optimizations per game.
- If the cause remains unclear, use a clean boot to isolate startup software. Microsoft’s clean boot instructions explain the procedure.
Black screen or unusable display after a graphics change
In Windows Recovery Environment, select Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart, then choose Enable low-resolution video or Safe Mode. Low-resolution video can help reset display settings; Safe Mode loads a limited driver environment. Follow Microsoft’s Startup Settings instructions.
Tweaks to avoid as routine optimizations
- Registry hacks: Do not use undocumented changes as general FPS advice. A registry edit needs a documented purpose, an explanation of its trade-off, and a clear way back.
- Service-disabling lists and debloat scripts: Dependencies differ by device and software. Removing components can break updates, security, audio, networking, controllers, Store games, or laptop power management.
- Turning off security features: Do not disable Microsoft Defender or memory-integrity protections as a default gaming tweak. That introduces a security trade-off, not a routine optimization.
- Global fullscreen-optimization changes: Treat these as compatibility workarounds. Try Windows’ per-game graphics controls first.
- RAM cleaners and one-click game boosters: They can interfere with games, launchers, or anti-cheat and may force data to be loaded again. Manual, reversible changes are safer.
- Hidden “Ultimate Performance” plan commands: Microsoft’s current user-facing guidance points to Power mode → Best performance, which already carries a power and heat trade-off. A hidden plan is not a guaranteed gaming upgrade.
A practical starting configuration
- Keep Windows, chipset drivers, GPU drivers, and games current, but preserve a rollback path for driver changes.
- Turn on Game Mode and set the display to its intended refresh rate.
- Set each game to the high-performance GPU where hybrid graphics could choose incorrectly.
- Enable windowed-game optimizations for compatible DX10/DX11 windowed or borderless games.
- Use Best performance while plugged in if cooling and power use are acceptable.
- Disable background recording if unused; test overlays, HAGS, and HDR only when relevant to the game or a symptom.
- Tune game graphics to the measured CPU, GPU, memory, or thermal limit, then compare frame times as well as average FPS.
Windows 11 menu names and availability can vary by build, edition, hardware, device maker, and regional rollout. The Xbox full-screen gaming experience, for example, requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or later and is available only in supported markets; it is not required for the optimizations above.
