1. Organize and audit the video files
Make the collection understandable before building a playback queue. Consistent filenames and a simple catalog help you verify what will play and in what order. These are practical organization choices, not technical requirements imposed by OBS.
Use filenames that reveal content and sequence
Choose a predictable pattern, such as Series - Topic - 001 - Title.mp4. Include a sequence number where order matters, and use meaningful titles or topic labels so you can identify files without opening each one. Keep the pattern consistent across related videos.
Keep an inventory
A spreadsheet or text catalog can record each filename, its intended playlist, sequence, and any notes you need for review. Compare the catalog with the actual folder before going live; this can catch missing, duplicated, or misnamed files before they affect the queue.

Split a very large collection when useful
Separate videos into themed or scheduled groups if that makes the order easier to review—for example, one playlist per game, series, or time block. OBS documentation describes playlist playback but does not prescribe a folder structure or state a maximum playlist size, so choose groups that are practical for your own audit and maintenance routine.
Plan storage and backups around your library
For a large local collection, consider where the originals and backup copies will live. An external drive may be useful for storage or backup, but no particular capacity, drive type, transfer speed, or model is established as necessary. Base that choice on the size of your files and your backup plan.

2. Build the playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed. For 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC as specified in the OBS Project media sources documentation.
- Add a VLC Video source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene that will go to YouTube. The VLC Video source is the documented OBS route for a playlist of local video and other media files.
- Add the files in your intended order. Use the source’s playlist controls to select the files. Check the resulting order against your catalog, especially where sequence numbers or scheduled themes matter.
- Choose playback behavior. Enable loop if the playlist should restart after its final item. Enable shuffle only if randomized playback is appropriate; it does not preserve a deliberate sequence.
- Set visibility behavior deliberately. The source options documented by OBS include continuing, pausing, or stopping playback while the source is not visible. Choose the behavior that fits your scene design, and check that the source is visible in the live scene when you expect its video to be on air.
- Preview representative files. Check that video appears and audio is routed as intended. Include files from different parts of the collection in your check rather than assuming every file behaves identically.
The playlist source handles local playback and scene composition; it does not itself create the YouTube broadcast or send the encoded feed.
3. Connect OBS to a YouTube live broadcast
YouTube distinguishes the viewer-facing broadcast event from the incoming audio-video stream sent by an encoder. Google’s documentation describes a broadcast and a stream as separate resources that are bound together, and documents an ongoing 24/7 feed as one use case. In a normal desktop workflow, create or select the YouTube live event, then provide OBS with the stream connection details YouTube supplies. Keep the broadcast setup separate from the playlist setup so you can tell whether a problem is in local playback, encoding, or delivery.

For API-driven workflows, Google’s Understanding Broadcasts and Streams guide explains the broadcast/stream distinction and their relationship. You do not need to implement the API simply to use an OBS playlist.
4. Test the feed and monitor stream health
Before relying on an unattended stream, test the actual setup with representative moving video and audio. YouTube recommends selecting a quality that the available upload connection can reliably sustain, testing before going live, and monitoring stream health during the event. Its encoder guidance includes recommended resolution and bitrate settings by codec and frame rate; these settings can change, so consult the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page when configuring OBS. YouTube recommends RTMPS for its general encoder workflow.

If the playlist continues but viewers see a delivery problem, check the encoder connection and YouTube stream-health indicators rather than rebuilding the file order first. YouTube’s LiveStreams API documentation describes stream state and health fields, including configuration issues, which can help distinguish a delivery issue from a playback issue.

- VLC Video is missing from OBS: VLC may not be installed or its architecture may not match OBS. Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC, then reopen OBS and check the source list.
- A video does not appear in the playlist: Confirm the file is in the location you selected and that the playlist entry points to the intended file. Recheck the folder and catalog for moved or renamed files.
- The playlist does not restart: Check whether loop is enabled on the VLC Video source. Without looping, the selected queue can reach its end.
- Playback order is unexpected: Review the playlist order and whether shuffle is enabled. Turn shuffle off for a deliberate sequence, then compare the queue with your inventory.
- The video freezes or disappears in the live scene: Check whether the source is visible and review its behavior when hidden. OBS documents options to continue, pause, or stop playback while a source is not visible.
- Local playback looks right but YouTube is unhealthy: Treat that as a possible encoding or delivery issue. Test the upload connection, verify encoder settings against YouTube’s current recommendations, and inspect YouTube’s stream-health information.
