A reference GeForce2 MX runs at 175 MHz core and 166 MHz memory, but overclocking results depend on the specific card, its memory, and its cooling. In HotHardware’s 2000 test, one reference board reached 195/210 MHz (core/memory) with its stock cooling; after adding an active heatsink, the reviewer reached 205 MHz core. Treat those as historical results from one card—not safe or guaranteed targets for yours.
What GeForce2 MX overclocking can achieve
HotHardware’s 2000 review reported a stock reference clock of 175 MHz core and 166 MHz memory. The reviewer raised that board to 195 MHz core and 210 MHz memory without extra cooling, then fitted active cooling and reached 205 MHz core without reported artifacts or lock-ups. The memory control remained capped at 210 MHz.
These are results for a single reference AGP board under a period-specific test setup. Other GeForce2 MX cards can differ in memory type and bus width, stock clocks, interface, and cooling, so the figures are useful as historical context rather than a setting to copy blindly.
Why memory bandwidth is often the constraint
The GeForce2 MX’s narrower memory configuration than the GeForce2 GTS makes bandwidth an important performance limit. HotHardware’s review states, “Memory bandwidth will be the limiting factor with the GeForce2 MX.” That helps explain why increasing memory speed can matter more than raising core speed alone.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
NVIDIA’s 2002 product brief lists 2.7 GB/s of memory bandwidth for the GeForce2 MX, 1.3 GB/s for the MX 200, and 2.7 GB/s for the MX 400. These are stated family figures; check the exact model and board specification rather than assuming every card has identical memory. A higher clock cannot remove a bus-width limitation, so compare memory configuration as well as clock numbers when evaluating two boards.
How CoolBits exposed the clock controls
In the Windows driver workflow of the period, HotHardware used the “CoolBits” registry tweak to reveal NVIDIA’s overclocking controls in the driver control panel. This describes a historical procedure from a Windows 98SE-era review, not a promise that the same control exists in current operating systems or drivers.

If working with a period-compatible setup, make small clock increases rather than jumping straight to the review’s results. After each change, check the card under the games or graphics workloads you actually use. Watch for visual artifacts, popping pixels, freezes, or lock-ups; if any appear, reduce the clock. The review did not establish a standardized modern stability-test procedure, so a brief successful run is not proof of long-term stability.
Cooling modification in the 2000 review
To raise the core further, the HotHardware reviewer installed a Leadtek Winfast GeForce 1 heatsink, connected fan power using a three-pin header splice, and applied a thin layer of thermal grease or paste. With that modification, the review reports a 205 MHz core clock without artifacts, popping pixels, or a lock-up.

This is a report of one physical fit and installation, not a universal heatsink compatibility guide. Before fitting a replacement, check the card’s mounting points, clearance around the GPU and nearby components, fan power connection, and whether the heatsink makes proper contact. Do not assume that a heatsink intended for another card will fit yours just because it worked on the reviewer’s board.

HotHardware tested a GeForce2 MX reference AGP card in a system with a Pentium III 866, 128 MB of RDRAM, Windows 98SE, NVIDIA 5.32 drivers, and DirectX 7.0a. In Quake 3 Arena’s timedemo at 1024×768×32 and high quality, the overclocked card scored 57.5 fps. The review compared that result with approximately 63 fps for a GeForce1 DDR card in the same setup.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Those numbers describe a 2000-era test, not expected performance on a modern PC or in a different game, driver, or configuration. They illustrate that an overclocked MX could improve results in that specific test while still trailing the compared GeForce1 DDR card.

What to compare before choosing a clock
- Exact model and interface: establish whether the card is an MX, MX 200, or MX 400, and whether it is AGP or PCI.
- Memory: check memory type and bus width; these affect bandwidth and whether a clock comparison is meaningful.
- Starting clocks: use the card’s own stock core and memory clocks, not the reference board’s numbers by default.
- Cooling: note the installed heatsink and fan, if any, and confirm physical and electrical compatibility before a replacement.
- Stability: increase gradually and treat artifacts or lock-ups as evidence to back off, not as acceptable operation.
