To pair a new Xbox Wireless Controller with an Xbox Series X or Series S, turn on the console and controller, press the console’s Pair button, then press and hold the controller’s Pair button. When the controller’s Xbox button stops flashing and stays lit, it is connected. The console uses Xbox Wireless for this connection—not the Bluetooth settings used to connect a controller to a phone or PC.
Before you start
- Turn on your Xbox Series X or Series S.
- Use a controller designed for Xbox Series X|S, such as the Xbox Wireless Controller. Older and third-party controllers may have different compatibility or setup requirements.
- Make sure the controller has two working AA batteries, a charged rechargeable battery pack, or a USB-C cable for wired use. Microsoft lists AA batteries as the standard controller power option and advertises up to 40 hours of battery life; that is a manufacturer estimate, not a guarantee, and actual life varies with use and accessories.
- Keep the controller near the console while pairing and make sure you can reach both Pair buttons.
The console’s small Pair button is on its front. The controller’s Pair button is on its top edge, beside the USB-C port. It is not the Xbox button, Menu button, View button, or Share button. Some people call it the sync button; look for the Pair button.
Pairing links the controller to the console. It does not sign you into an Xbox profile, assign the controller to a player, update its firmware, or connect it to a phone or PC. You do not normally need to remove an existing controller before adding another one.
Pair the controller wirelessly
- Press the console’s Xbox button to make sure the console is on.
- Press the Xbox button on the controller to turn it on.
- Press and release the small Pair button on the console.
- Within about 20 seconds, press and hold the controller’s Pair button beside its USB-C port.
- Watch the controller’s Xbox button. It flashes while searching; when it stops flashing and stays lit, the controller has connected. Release the Pair button.
- Move a stick or press a face button to check that the console responds.
If the button continues flashing, the controller has not completed the connection. Work through the troubleshooting steps below rather than repeating the same button presses indefinitely.

Use a USB-C cable as a wired connection
Connect the controller’s USB-C port on its top edge directly to a USB port on the console, then press the controller’s Xbox button. A USB-C cable can provide a wired way to play and can help determine whether the controller powers on and communicates with the console. Microsoft describes its controller-and-cable bundle for wired play as well as wireless use: Xbox Wireless Controller + USB-C cable.
Use a data-capable cable. A cable made only for charging may power the controller without providing a usable connection to the console. If the console does not respond, try another cable and USB port. Working over USB does not by itself prove that the controller’s wireless connection is functioning. Once the wired connection works, you can retry wireless pairing.

If your controller will not pair
Try these checks in order, starting with power and the pairing sequence before investigating compatibility or hardware.

- Replace both AA batteries with fresh ones, checking their orientation, or remove and reseat the rechargeable pack.
- Connect the controller to the console with a data-capable USB-C cable and press the Xbox button.
- If USB does not work, try another cable and console USB port. Check the battery contacts and USB-C port for visible damage.
- Press and hold the Xbox button briefly to turn the controller on; the Xbox button is the power button, not the Pair button.
The Xbox button keeps flashing
- Turn the controller off, then restart the console normally.
- Replace or recharge the batteries.
- Move close to the console and repeat the Pair-button procedure: press the console’s Pair button first, then hold the controller’s Pair button within about 20 seconds.
- Move away from possible sources of wireless interference and try again.
- If it still will not connect, test it over USB-C as described above.
- If the controller works over USB, check whether an update is offered through the Xbox Accessories app or the console’s accessory-management interface. Microsoft identifies the Xbox Accessories app as a tool for compatible controller customization; an update may be available, but it is not a guaranteed fix for every wireless problem.
If the controller does not work over a known-good cable either, or a button or port appears damaged, consult Xbox controller troubleshooting or the controller manufacturer for model-specific support.

The controller connects but the wrong account is active
A connected controller and a signed-in profile are separate things. Press the Xbox button, open the profile or account selector, and choose the intended account. If necessary, assign the controller to that account in Xbox settings; the exact menu labels can vary with console software.
The controller is older or made by another company
Do not assume that every wireless or Bluetooth gamepad can connect directly to an Xbox. Xbox One accessories vary in Series X|S compatibility, and a third-party controller may require USB, a specific adapter, a firmware update, or the maker’s own pairing procedure. Check the exact model’s instructions and Microsoft’s Xbox One accessory compatibility guidance for Series X|S. A controller designed only for Xbox 360 should not be assumed to pair with a Series X|S console.

Add another controller
You can pair an additional controller without first unpairing the one already connected:
- Leave the console on and turn on the additional controller.
- Press and release the console’s Pair button.
- Within about 20 seconds, press and hold the new controller’s Pair button until its Xbox button stays lit.
Repeat the process for each controller you want to add. If one controller works and the new one does not, focus first on the new controller’s batteries, cable, compatibility, and condition.

Pairing to a phone or PC is different
If you want to use the controller with a compatible phone, tablet, or Windows PC, pair it from that device’s Bluetooth settings instead. The Xbox Series X|S console procedure uses the console and controller Pair buttons. Microsoft lists Bluetooth support for compatible devices separately from Xbox Wireless console connectivity; supported functions depend on the device and operating-system version. Power options after pairing
The standard Xbox Wireless Controller can use AA batteries or a compatible rechargeable battery pack. Microsoft’s Xbox Rechargeable Battery + USB-C Cable is designed for Xbox Wireless Controllers with a USB-C port; Microsoft advertises up to 30 hours per charge and a full charge in under four hours. These are manufacturer claims, and actual battery life and charging time can vary. A rechargeable pack is optional and is not required to pair the controller.
