Bluetooth headphones, earbuds, and speakers pair through the console’s Bluetooth Audio settings. Wired headsets use the 3.5 mm jack, while USB and 2.4 GHz headsets need a compatible port or receiver. Bluetooth microphones are not supported on either Switch generation, so voice chat requires a wired, USB, supported 2.4 GHz, or Switch 2 built-in microphone.
Identify your console and audio device
These instructions cover Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED, and Nintendo Switch 2. First determine whether your device uses standard Bluetooth audio, a 3.5 mm plug, USB audio, or a proprietary 2.4 GHz USB receiver. A USB-C connector alone does not guarantee USB-audio compatibility.
| Device | Best connection route | Audio output | Microphone expectation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth earbuds or headphones | Built-in Bluetooth Audio | Yes | No Bluetooth microphone input |
| Bluetooth speaker | Built-in Bluetooth Audio | Yes | Not applicable |
| 3.5 mm headphones | Console headphone jack | Yes | Headset microphone may work in supported software |
| 3.5 mm headset | Console, or a supported controller jack | Yes | Usually the simplest wired-chat option |
| USB headset or microphone | Dock USB port or supported USB-C connection | Often | Depends on console, port, device, and software |
| 2.4 GHz wireless headset | Compatible USB receiver in the dock or USB-C adapter | Often | Often supported, but receiver compatibility varies |
| TV, soundbar, or AV receiver | HDMI through the dock | Yes | Normally no headset-microphone path |
| Bluetooth transmitter | 3.5 mm or USB transmitter | Yes | Transmitter microphone behavior varies |
Prepare before pairing
- Update the console through HOME Menu → System Settings → System → System Update.
- Charge the headphones, earbuds, speaker, or headset.
- Put the device into its actual Bluetooth pairing mode; being powered on is not enough.
- Disconnect it from phones, tablets, computers, and televisions.
- For a wireless gaming headset, check whether it is Bluetooth or uses a proprietary USB receiver.
Pair Bluetooth headphones, earbuds, or speakers
Original Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED
Bluetooth audio requires system software 13.0.0 or later. Nintendo’s current guidance is to update to the latest available system version. The official pairing instructions are documented by Nintendo Support.
- Put the audio device into pairing mode.
- If necessary, disconnect wireless controllers so no more than two remain connected; a Joy-Con pair counts as two controllers.
- Open HOME Menu → System Settings → Bluetooth Audio → Pair Device.
- Wait several seconds for the device list to populate.
- Select the device name and wait for the connection confirmation.
- Play a game or system sound, then adjust both console and headphone volume.
Only one Bluetooth audio device can be connected at once, although up to 10 devices can be saved. Bluetooth microphone input is not supported.

Open the console’s Bluetooth Audio settings, place the device in pairing mode, select it, and test game audio. For microphone selection, use HOME Menu → System Settings → Audio → Audio Input. Reconnect, disconnect, or remove a saved device
- Reconnect: Turn on the saved device while it is not connected to another host and keep it near the console.
- Disconnect: Open the saved device in Bluetooth Audio settings and choose Disconnect Device.
- Remove: Select the saved device and choose Remove Device. You must pair it again later.
Connect wired headphones and headsets
Handheld or tabletop play
Insert compatible headphones or a TRRS headset into the console’s 3.5 mm audio jack. This avoids Bluetooth latency, the two-controller restriction, and Bluetooth’s local-wireless disconnection. A headset microphone works only where the game or chat system supports it.
Docked play
For ordinary TV play, audio travels through HDMI to the television, soundbar, or AV receiver. You can also try a compatible USB headset, DAC, or wireless receiver in a dock USB port, but USB support depends on the console, device, receiver, operating mode, and software.
Switch 2 input options
Depending on the hardware, Switch 2 can use a microphone or headset connected through the console USB-C port, dock USB port, console audio jack, or Switch 2 Pro Controller audio jack. Select the intended source under System Settings → Audio → Audio Input.
Use USB and 2.4 GHz wireless headsets
Connect a USB headset, microphone, or the headset’s USB receiver to a compatible dock port. For handheld use, a supported USB-C connection or adapter may be required. Proprietary 2.4 GHz receivers are not Bluetooth devices and will not appear in the Bluetooth Audio list. Confirm that the manufacturer supports your exact Switch model and intended mode.

- Low-latency 2.4GHz wireless connection for Switch 2 gaming
- Bluetooth wireless connection for mobile
- Rechargeable 40-hour battery life + quick-charge
- High-quality 40mm drivers deliver immersive game audio
On Switch 2, Nintendo states that USB speakers are supported in TV mode, not handheld or tabletop mode; see the Switch 2 audio support topics.
Connect a TV, soundbar, or AV receiver
In TV mode, leave the Switch connected to the dock and connect the sound system to the television or receiver using HDMI. If you want Bluetooth headphones, pair them with the TV or receiver instead of the Switch. The TV-side Bluetooth connection is separate from the console’s Bluetooth Audio pairing and may have its own latency or single-device limits.
Microphones and voice chat
Bluetooth audio on the original Switch and Switch 2 provides output only; Nintendo does not support Bluetooth microphone input. Use one of these alternatives:

The device appears but will not connect
It may still be connected elsewhere, occupied by multipoint, in the wrong operating mode, blocked by another connected Bluetooth audio device, or using a proprietary receiver. Remove the saved entry and pair again if necessary.
Audio is delayed
Bluetooth latency varies by device and connection. Update both products, move closer, reduce wireless interference, and try another device. For rhythm or competitive games, wired audio or a verified low-latency wireless system is more dependable. Do not assume a particular codec will work unless both products document support for it.

Audio is too quiet or too loud
- Raise or lower console volume.
- Adjust the headset or speaker’s own volume.
- Check device-specific controls.
- Check whether the same headphones were recently used with another product at a different volume.
The microphone is not detected
For Bluetooth, this is expected. For a wired headset, reseat the plug and verify the game’s chat support. On Switch 2 with USB audio, reconnect the device, try another port, select it under Audio → Audio Input, temporarily disable noise suppression, raise input volume, and run Test Microphone. In GameChat, confirm that your speaking indicator reacts and that other participants have not lowered your volume.
Bluetooth disconnects during local multiplayer
This is an expected system limitation during local wireless communication, not necessarily a defective headset. Disconnect Bluetooth before starting local wireless play, or use wired or supported USB audio instead. Nintendo documents this behavior in its Switch audio support topics.
Headset buttons do not work
Playback can work even when play/pause, track controls, voice-assistant buttons, sidetone, or volume controls do not. Nintendo warns that Bluetooth device controls may not operate normally.

Choose the right connection
| Priority | Recommended route | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Fastest, simplest setup | 3.5 mm wired headphones or headset | Low latency and no Bluetooth controller limit |
| Cable-free solo play | Built-in Bluetooth earbuds or headphones | Convenient audio output without a wire |
| Microphone required | Wired, USB, or compatible 2.4 GHz headset | Bluetooth microphones are unsupported |
| Competitive or rhythm games | Wired or verified low-latency wireless | Bluetooth delay varies |
| Docked TV audio | HDMI to TV, soundbar, or receiver | Uses the normal docked audio path |
| Local wireless multiplayer | Wired or supported USB audio | Bluetooth audio can disconnect during local communication |
A Bluetooth transmitter connected through an analog or USB output can help with some setups, but it does not guarantee microphone support or eliminate latency. Treat it as a compatibility workaround, not a universal solution.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can AirPods connect to Nintendo Switch?
Yes. Put them in standard Bluetooth pairing mode and select them under Bluetooth Audio. Audio output should work, but the microphone and some touch, multipoint, or volume features will not.
Can I use two Bluetooth headsets at the same time?
No. The console supports one connected Bluetooth audio device at a time.
Can I use a Bluetooth speaker?
Yes, if it supports standard Bluetooth audio and enters pairing mode. It remains subject to the same latency, controller, and local-wireless limitations.
Does a wireless headset dongle work?
A 2.4 GHz USB receiver may work through a compatible dock or USB-C connection, but it is not Bluetooth and compatibility is model-specific.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I wear headphones while the Switch is docked?
Yes. Use HDMI audio through the TV or receiver, or a compatible dock-connected USB headset. A 3.5 mm headset remains simplest in handheld mode.
