Yes—NVIDIA SHIELD TV can pair with a Bluetooth-capable Xbox One controller or a PlayStation 5 DualSense over Bluetooth. The key Xbox caveat is that not every controller sold with an Xbox One console has Bluetooth; early Xbox One controllers that use only Xbox Wireless will not show up in SHIELD’s Bluetooth scan. “Xbox One X” is the console name, not a distinct controller model.

Check these things before pairing

  • Install available SHIELD system updates. NVIDIA lists support for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 4/5 controller families in its SHIELD software update notes; menu labels can vary by model and software version.
  • Charge the controller and keep it near SHIELD for setup.
  • Turn off or disconnect the controller from a nearby console, PC, phone, or tablet so it does not reconnect to that device during pairing.
  • Keep the SHIELD remote, SHIELD mobile app, or a USB keyboard available if you are relying on the controller as your only input device.
  • For Xbox, confirm the exact controller supports Bluetooth. NVIDIA’s SHIELD FAQ specifies Bluetooth Xbox One controllers.

Open SHIELD’s Bluetooth pairing menu

  1. From the SHIELD home screen, open Settings.
  2. Select Remotes & accessories, then Add accessory.
  3. Wait for SHIELD to scan nearby Bluetooth devices, then put the controller into pairing mode.
  4. Select the controller’s name on the SHIELD screen and accept any pairing prompt.
  5. Check that it appears among connected accessories, then test it in the game or app you intend to use.

NVIDIA’s SHIELD accessory guide documents adding an accessory from Settings and selecting it after it enters connecting mode. Depending on SHIELD software, you may instead see a label such as Add Bluetooth accessory.

Pair an Xbox One controller

  1. Turn the controller off if it is already on, then press the Xbox button to power it up.
  2. Press and hold the controller’s pair/bind button until the Xbox button starts flashing.
  3. On SHIELD, open Settings > Remotes & accessories > Add accessory.
  4. Select the Xbox controller when it appears. Wait for the light to stop flashing or for SHIELD to show a connected status.
  5. Test it in the intended game or streaming app.

The pairing-button procedure is documented by NVIDIA for Xbox Series X/S controllers; Xbox One support applies when the controller has Bluetooth. The critical distinction is Bluetooth versus Microsoft’s proprietary Xbox Wireless connection: an early Xbox One controller without Bluetooth cannot use SHIELD’s standard Bluetooth pairing route. If it never appears in the scan, check the controller revision before repeatedly resetting SHIELD. NVIDIA’s FAQ and the model wording in 8BitDo’s receiver documentation both distinguish Bluetooth-capable Xbox One S/X controllers.

Pair a PS5 DualSense

  1. Make sure the DualSense is off and not connected to another device. If its light is on, hold the PS button until it turns off.
  2. Press and hold the Create button, the small button to the left of the touchpad.
  3. While holding Create, press and hold the PS button for at least three seconds. Release when the light bar and player indicator flash.
  4. On SHIELD, open Settings > Remotes & accessories > Add accessory.
  5. Select the DualSense and wait for SHIELD to show it as connected.

Sony’s Android TV Remote Play instructions specify holding Create and PS for at least three seconds, then selecting the controller in Android TV settings. NVIDIA’s SHIELD software notes also list PlayStation 5 controllers as supported.

Where the controllers can work—and what support means

A paired controller can be used in Android TV games and controller-compatible apps, including GeForce NOW, Steam Link, Moonlight, and other remote-streaming clients. A DualSense can also be used with PS Remote Play on Android TV where the app and setup are supported; Sony’s instructions cover pairing it and launching Remote Play.

Bluetooth pairing confirms the connection, not that every app or game accepts it. Controller recognition and button mapping depend on the particular game, emulator, or streaming app. Some games show generic or PlayStation-style prompts with an Xbox controller, or mismatched A/B labels; that does not necessarily mean the Bluetooth connection failed.

Expect standard input, not every controller feature

The practical baseline is buttons, sticks, triggers, and the D-pad in apps that support gamepads. Do not assume that rumble, DualSense adaptive triggers or advanced haptics, a headset jack, microphone, speaker, motion controls, or custom button functions will work through SHIELD. Sony notes that DualSense feature availability varies by device and application; its Bluetooth support page describes device-specific limitations, including adaptive-trigger incompatibility with Android-based mobile devices. SHIELD app support is a separate question, so treat those advanced features as unconfirmed unless the target app documents them.

Troubleshoot pairing and input problems

The controller does not appear in SHIELD’s scan

  1. Turn the controller completely off, disconnect any USB cable, and repeat its pairing-button sequence.
  2. Move it within a few feet of SHIELD and switch off Bluetooth on nearby consoles, phones, tablets, and PCs that may reclaim the connection.
  3. Restart SHIELD and try Add accessory again.
  4. Remove an old controller entry under Settings > Remotes & accessories, if present, then pair again.
  5. For DualSense, verify it is off and repeat the Create + PS procedure; Sony recommends this reset-and-retry approach in its Bluetooth pairing guidance.
  6. For Xbox, verify the controller is Bluetooth-capable. A non-Bluetooth Xbox One model will not be fixed by repeating SHIELD’s scan.

SHIELD says connected, but the game does not respond

  1. Quit and relaunch the game or streaming app so it can detect the connected controller.
  2. Test another app known to support gamepads. If input works there, check the original app’s controller settings, mapping, and supported input modes.
  3. Restart SHIELD, then forget and re-pair the controller if it still fails across apps.
  4. If available for your SHIELD model and app, try a wired controller as a diagnostic; do not assume a wired DualSense connection will work on every SHIELD setup.

The controller disconnects or pairing is unstable

  • Recharge the controller, reduce distance and obstructions, and keep it away from potential Bluetooth interference sources such as routers, USB 3 devices, soundbars, or other wireless accessories.
  • Check for controller firmware updates using the manufacturer’s supported method.
  • Make sure a nearby console is not reclaiming the controller. Reconnect it to SHIELD after stopping that competing connection.
  • If SHIELD disconnects accessories during sleep, review its Bluetooth accessory and sleep settings; NVIDIA documents Bluetooth accessory management in its SHIELD software notes.

DualSense connects, but rumble or adaptive triggers do not work

That is generally a feature-support limitation, not evidence that Bluetooth pairing failed. Whether advanced features work depends on the device and application, as Sony explains in its DualSense Bluetooth guidance.

You want to use the controller with its console again

For DualSense, connect it to the PS5 using a compatible USB cable and press the PS button; Sony documents this reconnection method on its DualSense support page. An Xbox controller may need to be paired to the Xbox again using the console’s normal procedure. Do not assume automatic switching between devices; behavior depends on the controller model.

Which controller makes sense for SHIELD?

Controller Direct Bluetooth pairing Practical fit Main caveat
Xbox One Bluetooth controller Yes, if the exact model supports Bluetooth. Android games and PC-style streaming where Xbox button layouts are familiar. Some early Xbox One controllers use Xbox Wireless only.
PS5 DualSense Yes. Existing PS5 owners, especially those using PS Remote Play on Android TV. Advanced features are not guaranteed on SHIELD apps.

If you already own either controller, try direct pairing first. If buying for SHIELD and PC-style streaming, a current Bluetooth Xbox controller is a straightforward choice, but confirm Bluetooth support for the exact model. Choose DualSense if it fits your existing PlayStation setup or Remote Play use; do not buy it for SHIELD expecting every PS5 feature.

Alternatives if Bluetooth is not the right fit

  • Wired USB controller: Useful for reducing wireless interference and diagnosing Bluetooth trouble. SHIELD TV Tube has fewer connectivity options than SHIELD TV Pro, so check the ports and compatibility of your exact model. Cable length can also make couch play impractical.
  • SHIELD Controller: A naturally integrated option, but it is an older accessory; assess condition, battery health, and compatibility before buying a used one.
  • Third-party Bluetooth controller: Look for documented Android TV compatibility, standard Android or XInput mapping, firmware-update support, and suitable multiplayer support. Do not assume an Android phone-compatible controller will work equally well with every SHIELD app.
  • Wireless USB receiver: Consider only as a fallback after checking the exact receiver, firmware, controller, SHIELD model, and app. The 8BitDo manual documents a particular receiver pairing context; it does not establish universal SHIELD compatibility.
