That repeats the selected playlist, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted overnight playback: YouTube may pause long Autoplay sessions, and a Pi, browser, network connection or power supply can also stop working.
What you need for the Raspberry Pi 5 setup
- A Raspberry Pi 5 with Raspberry Pi OS desktop installed on a microSD card. Raspberry Pi describes its 64-bit OS as intended for newer models including Pi 5, and its setup guide explains that the microSD card stores the OS and files. Raspberry Pi OS documentation · Raspberry Pi setup guide
- A display and audio device suitable for the room, plus an internet connection.
- A suitable power supply. Raspberry Pi recommends 5 V at 5 A and its 27 W USB-C power supply for Pi 5. With a 5 V at 3 A supply, the stated current available to peripherals is limited to 600 mA. See Raspberry Pi’s getting-started guidance.
No special video bitrate, stream key or streaming software is needed for this method: the Pi is playing YouTube in a browser, not broadcasting a live stream.
How do I loop a YouTube playlist?
- Start the Pi 5 and open YouTube in its desktop browser.
- Open the bedtime-story playlist and select a video in that playlist.
- On a computer, expand the playlist box and click Loop. YouTube says this makes the playlist repeat continuously. Check that playlist repeat is enabled rather than relying on a control for repeating only one video. Follow YouTube’s playlist-looping instructions for computers.
- Play the playlist and confirm that the stories, audio level and display behave as you intend on the actual setup.

YouTube describes Autoplay as selecting another related video after the current one ends; its settings can differ by device. It is not required to repeat a chosen playlist. See YouTube’s Autoplay help.
How do I keep bedtime stories playing overnight?
Enable playlist Loop, then test the arrangement for the length of time you expect to use it. Before leaving it unattended, check that every intended recording is in the playlist, playback and audio are working, the network is available, and the display behaves appropriately for the room. These checks can catch setup problems, but they cannot guarantee continuous playback.

YouTube says it may show a “Continue watching?” prompt after 60 minutes on the web and 180 minutes on TV during uninterrupted Autoplay viewing. Those are documented prompt timings for Autoplay, not a promise that a playlist loop will remain uninterrupted—or an assurance that the Pi will recover from a power, browser or network failure. Power, cooling and practical limits
Use a supply appropriate for Pi 5. Raspberry Pi’s current getting-started documentation recommends 5 V at 5 A and a 27 W USB-C supply; it states that a 5 V at 3 A supply limits peripheral current to 600 mA. A display or other connected equipment may affect which supply is appropriate, so follow the device’s power requirements too.

Extra cooling is not automatically required for this workload. In a 2023 article, Raspberry Pi’s Alasdair Allan wrote, “For normal usage adding cooling is entirely optional,” and noted YouTube viewing is less demanding than the heavy CPU stress test discussed there. Troubleshooting overnight playback
- The next video is unrelated: Autoplay may be selecting related content. Enable Loop on the playlist itself and verify its videos.
- Playback pauses and asks whether you are still watching: YouTube documents this prompt during long Autoplay sessions. Resume playback if you are present; do not treat playlist Loop as a guarantee against every interruption.
- There is no sound: Check the Pi’s selected audio output, the connected device’s volume and mute state, and the video player’s volume.
- A video does not play: Check the network connection and whether the recording remains available to your account or region, then try another playlist item.
- The Pi stops or connected devices behave unreliably: Check the power supply against Raspberry Pi’s Pi 5 guidance and the requirements of connected equipment.
- The setup does not resume after a failure: The cited setup instructions do not establish automatic recovery for browser, network or power interruptions. Restart playback manually and test recovery behavior rather than assuming it.
