How do I get 4:3 stretched in CS2?

Open Counter-Strike 2’s video settings and select a 4:3 aspect ratio. Choose a 4:3 resolution that is available on your display. Set the game to fullscreen if needed for your display’s scaling behavior. In the control software for the GPU driving that display, choose the option that scales the image to fill the panel. Apply the settings and return to the game. The image should fill the wider screen, with the 4:3 picture stretched horizontally.

Why are there still black bars?
Black bars usually mean the active display scaling preserves the 4:3 image’s proportions instead of stretching it to fill the screen, or that the setting was changed for a different display. Confirm the correct monitor is selected in your GPU control panel, then look for a full-screen or full-panel scaling mode. Exact labels and menus vary by GPU vendor and driver; the Steam Community guide discusses NVIDIA and AMD options, but its steps are community guidance rather than official vendor documentation.
On laptops, the display may be driven through a different graphics processor than expected, and external monitors can have their own scaling behavior. If the vendor panel’s setting does not affect the game, check which GPU controls the active display and whether the monitor itself has a scaling or aspect-ratio setting.

Stretched or black bars: which should I choose?

Neither mode is established as universally better. Pick the presentation you prefer; this setting guide does not establish a performance benefit for stretched resolution.
What if CS2 does not keep or offer the resolution?
First try choosing the resolution in the game’s video menu. If it is not retained or is unavailable there, Steam documents launch options to request a width, height, and fullscreen mode. In Steam, open the game’s Properties and enter the appropriate options in Launch Options:

For example, to request 1280×960 fullscreen, enter -w 1280 -h 960 -fullscreen. This is a fallback, not a guarantee that every display or driver will support that resolution. Steam’s documentation for these options is at Steam launch options.
Does this still work for CS:GO?
CS:GO is the legacy name commonly used for this setting. Valve’s Steam listing identifies Counter-Strike 2 as “A free upgrade to CS:GO,” so the instructions above refer to CS2, the current game listed by Valve: Counter-Strike 2 on Steam.
