To play Fate/EXTRA on a PC, use PPSSPP, a PSP emulator, and provide your own copy of the game as an ISO or CSO file. PPSSPP does not include the game. Once it is loaded, you can use the default controls or map a keyboard or gamepad, then save through the game as you would on a PSP.

What you need to play Fate/EXTRA on PC

  • PPSSPP: the PSP emulator for Windows, macOS, and other platforms. Download it from the official PPSSPP site. Windows users can choose the conventional installer or portable ZIP; the project’s getting-started guide describes both.
  • A game file you are entitled to use: PPSSPP loads PSP games in ISO or CSO format. The emulator does not distribute Fate/EXTRA; see the PPSSPP FAQ for its explanation of game files.
  • Optional input device: a keyboard is enough to configure controls, while a compatible PC gamepad is another option. No controller is required.

Fate/EXTRA was released for PSP, so the PC method here is emulation rather than a separate PC edition. Availability and the legal rules for making or using a game copy vary by location; use a lawful copy and follow the rules that apply where you live.

Install PPSSPP and open the game

  1. Install PPSSPP. Download the version for your operating system from the official site and install it, or use the portable Windows ZIP if you prefer not to use an installer.
  2. Keep your ISO or CSO file somewhere accessible. PPSSPP needs a game file supplied by you; installing the emulator alone will not add Fate/EXTRA.
  3. Browse to the game file in PPSSPP. Open the folder where you put the ISO or CSO and select it to launch the game. If it does not appear, confirm you are browsing the folder that actually contains the file.

PPSSPP’s Introduction to PPSSPP says, “Generally, the defaults should be fine, unless you want to set up controllers and so on.” You can start with the defaults and change input settings only if needed.

Choose and configure your controls

The game’s PSP button functions are documented in the controls section of the English Fate/EXTRA manual. PPSSPP maps PSP inputs onto your PC keyboard or gamepad, so check that manual for what each in-game button does rather than assuming a keyboard key has a universal Fate/EXTRA function.

#1 Best Overall
Fate/Extra - Sony PSP
  • Engrossing Story: Written by the creator of the original Fate series of PC games, Kinoko Nasu, the story of Fate/EXTRA will not only appeal to long time fans of the Fate universe, via the inclusion of many familiar characters, but will also appeal to RPG fans looking for a deep, non-formulaic storyline that delves into such mature themes as loyalty, death, love, and what it means to be human
  • Extensive replay value: Multiple story paths, each with their own unique dialog trees and character interactions that lead to different endings.
  • Intuitive, Fast-paced Battle System: Using Guards, Attacks, and Breaks in combination with powerful Special Moves and Magic Spells, players are required to plan out their attacks to effectively counter their opponent's moves and emerge victorious from potentially deadly encounters.

Keyboard

Open PPSSPP’s Control Mapping settings to inspect or change the keyboard bindings. The exact key layout can vary with the emulator build or a user’s configuration, so use the mapping screen in your installed version instead of relying on a fixed layout from another setup.

Gamepad

A gamepad can feel more natural for a game designed around PSP buttons, but it is optional. PPSSPP documents built-in XInput and DirectInput gamepad support on Windows in its FAQ. Configure or verify the bindings in Control Mapping; support for those input standards does not guarantee identical behavior for every controller or computer.

Save progress and find your save files

There are two different kinds of saves to understand: ordinary saves made by the game and save states made by the emulator. Use the game’s own save option for normal progress, and treat save states as extra snapshots rather than a replacement.

Save type What it contains Where PPSSPP keeps it
In-game save Progress saved using Fate/EXTRA‘s own save system. PSP/SAVEDATA inside PPSSPP’s emulated Memory Stick.
Save state An emulator snapshot of the game at a particular moment. PSP/PPSSPP_STATE inside the emulated Memory Stick.

The locations are listed in the PPSSPP FAQ. On Windows and macOS, choose File → Open Memory Stick to open the folder; on other platforms, the getting-started guide directs users to Settings → System → Show Memory Stick folder. Copy the relevant save data elsewhere when making a backup.

The English game manual explains that PSP progress was saved to a Memory Stick Duo. PPSSPP emulates that storage as a directory on your computer, so you do not need physical PSP hardware to save. If you use save states, remember they are separate from game saves: a snapshot can be useful for a quick return, but an ordinary in-game save is the more appropriate way to preserve game progress.

What to check if the game does not work as expected

  • Confirm the selected file. Make sure PPSSPP is opening the intended Fate/EXTRA ISO or CSO, not just the folder where you think it is stored.
  • Check the game’s region or version. Compatibility reports distinguish regional builds, so identify which release you have before comparing your result with a report.
  • Undo changes you made while troubleshooting. If you changed emulator options, the PPSSPP system settings documentation describes restoring defaults. Test again with default settings before making further adjustments.
  • Keep compatibility claims in perspective. PPSSPP’s community report pages include Japanese version 1.01 and US version 1.00 entries marked “Perfect”; the European page also includes historical reports, including a Windows 64 entry marked “Playable” on PPSSPP 1.13.1. These are user reports for particular builds and setups, not a guarantee for every current version, PC, or game revision. See the PPSSPP compatibility reports for the entries.
