To play a free-to-play Steam game with friends, first check whether it has its own online co-op or PvP mode; if it does, use the game’s party, lobby, or invite system. If it instead supports local multiplayer and Steam Remote Play Together, one person can host the game and invite others to join a streamed session. Free-to-play status alone does not determine which option is available.
Choose the right way to play together
There are two different routes. A game’s built-in online multiplayer lets each player connect through that game’s own systems. Steam Remote Play Together is for supported local-multiplayer games: one player runs the game and streams the session to invited participants.
| What to check | Game’s online multiplayer | Steam Remote Play Together |
|---|---|---|
| Game support needed | An online co-op or PvP mode | Remote Play Together support and local multiplayer |
| Who runs the game? | Follow the game’s own requirements | One host launches and runs it |
| Ownership and installation | Game-specific; check its listing and rules | Steam says the host owns and runs it; Steam’s 2021 invite instructions say only the host needs to own and install the game |
| How friends join | Use the game’s lobby, party, matchmaking, or invite tools | The host invites through Steam Friends after launching a supported game |
| Inputs | Game-specific | Controllers, shared keyboard and mouse, and some mobile touch input are described by Steam |
| Main limitation | Menus, requirements, and player limits differ by game | It does not work for games that lack the feature or local multiplayer |
How to use a game’s own online co-op or PvP
- Open the game’s Steam store page and check its listed features for online co-op or online PvP.
- Install and launch the game. Find its multiplayer, party, lobby, or matchmaking menu.
- Follow the in-game instructions to invite friends or join the same room, mode, or party. The exact controls, account requirements, and player cap depend on the game.
This is usually the relevant route when a game offers online multiplayer. Do not assume that a free game has online co-op, or that every title uses Steam’s own friend-invite flow. For example, Steam’s Curve Fever Pro listing describes online PvP/co-op, friend features, and custom rooms, but when accessed it showed a planned September 2026 release and said the game was not yet available. Check its current listing rather than treating it as a playable recommendation.
How to use Steam Remote Play Together
- Check the game’s store page for both local multiplayer and Remote Play Together support. Having local multiplayer alone is not enough to assume the Steam feature will work.
- The host launches the game, opens Steam Friends, and sends an invite to the people joining.
- Guests accept the invitation and connect through the Steam or Steam Link option supported on their device.
- Choose controls that the game supports. Players can use controllers; Steam also describes sharing keyboard and mouse control, and its March 2021 instructions describe touch input on a phone or tablet.
Steam describes Remote Play Together as one person owning and running the game while others join the streamed session. Its feature page says “up to four players — or even more with fast connections”; this is Steam’s platform description, not a guaranteed limit for every game or connection. Steam’s published invite-link instructions say only the host needs to own and install the game for that route. Steam Remote Play details · Steam’s March 25, 2021 announcement.

What to do if an invite or connection fails
- Confirm the game supports Remote Play Together as well as local multiplayer if you are using Steam’s streaming route.
- For a native online session, check the game’s own multiplayer instructions and confirm everyone is joining the same mode, party, or lobby.
- Check that the invited friend’s device can use the connection method offered for the session.
- If input is the problem, try a controller or the game’s supported shared keyboard-and-mouse or mobile touch option.
- Consult the game’s support information for game-specific requirements; neither Steam’s feature description nor a free-to-play label guarantees compatibility or a particular player limit.
