To play games through Steam on Arch Linux, enable the multilib repository, install the steam package and the correct 32-bit graphics drivers, then use Steam’s native Linux version or Proton for Windows titles. Proton works for many games, not all; compatibility and anti-cheat support vary by title.
Install Steam on Arch Linux
The standard Arch route is the distribution’s steam package. Steam requires 32-bit graphics support, so make sure the driver matches your GPU vendor rather than accepting a package choice that may not fit your hardware. The ArchWiki Steam article recommends enabling multilib and installing the steam package.
- Enable multilib. Edit
/etc/pacman.confand uncomment the[multilib]repository section and itsIncludeline, then save the file. - Refresh package databases and update. Run
sudo pacman -Syu. - Install Steam. Run
sudo pacman -S steam. Review any offered 32-bit Vulkan driver and choose the one appropriate for your GPU. - Install or verify the matching 32-bit graphics driver. ArchWiki lists a 32-bit OpenGL driver as a requirement. Vulkan packages are also needed for Vulkan-based games and Proton configurations that use Vulkan.
- Launch Steam from your application menu or by running
steamin a terminal, then sign in.
Setup checks such as generating the en_US.UTF-8 locale, installing XDG Desktop Portal for file selection, or checking DNS with systemd-resolved are relevant only if the corresponding issue occurs; they are not mandatory additions for every system.
Choose where Steam and game files live
The Arch package’s default Steam directory is ~/.local/share/Steam; ~/.steam/root is used as a reference symlink in the ArchWiki. To add or move a game library, open Steam’s Settings > Storage and choose a location.

- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
Flatpak is an alternative installation route, but it cannot access arbitrary directories outside your home folder unless you grant it permission. If you want to keep games on an external drive, give Steam access to that drive’s specific mount directory using Flatseal or a Flatpak filesystem override. This restriction applies to Flatpak permissions, not the ordinary library setup for the Arch package. See the ArchWiki Steam article for its Flatpak notes.
Run native Linux games and Windows games with Proton
Use a native Linux version when available
If a game offers a native Linux build and it works properly on your system, Steam can install and launch that build. Not every Steam game has one.

Enable Steam Play for Windows games
Proton is Steam’s compatibility tool, based on Wine and additional components. It lets many Windows games run through Steam, but it does not guarantee that every title will work. Steam installs its own Proton builds when Steam Play is enabled. The ArchWiki says Proton Experimental is enabled by default in the client; Steam’s interface can change, so check the current Compatibility page if the setting is elsewhere.
- Open Steam > Settings > Compatibility.
- Enable Steam Play for supported titles. If you want to try Proton with a Windows title that is not listed as supported, enable the option to use Steam Play for other titles as well.
- Choose a Proton version if Steam offers a selection, then close Settings.
- Install and launch the game from your library.
If a game needs a different Proton build, set it only for that game: right-click it in your library, open Properties > Compatibility, check the option to force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, and select a version. Keep the default unless a particular title gives you a reason to change it; there is no single Proton version that is best for every game. These steps and compatibility behavior are documented in the ArchWiki Steam article.

Check game compatibility, especially for multiplayer
Proton compatibility is title-specific. A game may launch but still have problems with graphics, audio, performance, online features, or updates. Before buying or troubleshooting a particular game, check its current compatibility status and recent player reports rather than relying on a general claim that Proton supports it.
Anti-cheat is a particular limitation: Proton’s Easy Anti-Cheat integration requires the game’s developer to activate it. Even where the developer enables support, local system configuration can matter. Do not assume that an online or competitive game will work just because it launches under Proton. The ArchWiki Steam article also notes possible glibc and system-configuration issues.

Use a controller with Steam Input
A controller is optional; keyboard and mouse remain available where the game supports them. When you connect a controller, Steam ordinarily makes it available to the game. Steam Input adds configurable button and axis remapping and game-specific profiles.
To use those features, open Steam’s controller settings and enable Steam Input for your controller. You can then select or adjust mappings for games that benefit from a custom layout. The exact controller options and game behavior depend on the device and title; no particular controller model is required by this setup.

Troubleshoot a game that will not launch
Work from system-level requirements toward game-specific compatibility. Change one thing at a time so you can identify what fixes—or worsens—the problem.
- Verify graphics drivers. Check that the 32-bit OpenGL driver matches your GPU, and install the relevant Vulkan packages if the game or Proton configuration needs Vulkan.
- Identify which build is running. Determine whether Steam installed a native Linux version or is launching a Windows build through Proton.
- Try a per-game Proton setting. In the game’s Properties > Compatibility, test a different available Proton tool if the default fails. Keep a note of the original setting so you can restore it.
- Check title-specific issues. Look for current reports about that game, particularly its anti-cheat support if multiplayer does not work.
- Keep libraries consistent. Avoid mixing Steam runtime libraries with system libraries without a specific reason; the ArchWiki warns that doing so can cause binary incompatibilities.
- Check the problem that matches your setup. If Flatpak Steam cannot see a library, inspect its filesystem permissions and grant access to the correct mount point. If Steam cannot resolve hostnames on a system using
systemd-resolved, investigate DNS configuration rather than changing Proton settings.
For Arch-specific support, start with the ArchWiki Steam article and its linked troubleshooting guidance. The ArchWiki says Steam for Linux officially targets the latest Ubuntu or an Ubuntu LTS release, and advises users with Arch issues not to turn to Valve for support; this is the ArchWiki’s characterization of Valve’s support target, not a direct Valve quotation here.
Quick Recap
Choose the setup that fits your library
| Decision | Use this when | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Arch package or Flatpak | Choose the Arch package for the documented native Arch route; consider Flatpak as an alternative. | Flatpak needs explicit permission to access game folders outside your home directory. |
| Native Linux build or Proton | Use a working native build when available; use Proton for many Windows-only Steam games. | Proton compatibility varies by game, including multiplayer and anti-cheat behavior. |
| Default Proton or per-game override | Keep the default unless one game requires a different tool. | An override is specific to that game; a change that helps one title need not help another. |
| Keyboard and mouse or controller | Use the input method you prefer and the game supports. | Steam Input is optional and adds remapping and game-specific profiles. |
