To play an iMessage game, open a blue-bubble conversation in Messages, tap +, choose Store, install an iMessage game such as GamePigeon, select a title, make your move, and tap Send. Your friend opens the game message and takes the next turn.
What “iMessage games” are
iMessage games are games distributed as iMessage apps. You launch them from inside a Messages conversation rather than necessarily opening a normal game from the Home Screen. Apple describes iMessage apps as tools that work without leaving Messages (Apple’s iMessage-app guide).
A conventional App Store game runs as its own app. An iMessage game is selected from the Messages app drawer and sends turns or invitations as messages. Some ordinary games only share scores or links through Messages; those are not the same as a playable iMessage app.

- Use an iPhone with a recent iOS version and an Apple Account signed in for the App Store.
- Turn on iMessage in Settings > Apps > Messages > iMessage. Older iOS versions may place Messages directly in Settings.
- Use Wi-Fi or cellular data. iMessage uses data, so cellular charges depend on your plan (Apple support).
- Choose a conversation with someone who can use iMessage. Individual games can have their own player-count, age, regional, or device requirements.
Check the bubble color
Blue bubbles mean the conversation is using iMessage. Green bubbles mean RCS, SMS, or MMS. Green can result from an Android recipient, disabled iMessage, a temporary service problem, or incomplete activation (Apple’s explanation of green messages). iMessage-only games such as GamePigeon are not supported through the standard green-bubble flow.

Install an iMessage game
- Open Messages and open or start a conversation.
- Tap the + button beside the text field.
- Tap Store to open the App Store for iMessage.
- Search for a game, read its description, reviews, age rating, compatibility notes, and purchase terms.
- Tap Get, a price button, or Install when shown, then authenticate with your Apple Account.
- Return to the conversation. The app should now be available from +.
Apple also lets you enable or disable installed iMessage apps at Settings > Apps > Messages > iMessage Apps (Apple’s current instructions). A free download does not mean every feature is free.
Start a GamePigeon match
GamePigeon is a prominent iMessage-only collection rather than one single game.
- Open a one-to-one or compatible group iMessage conversation.
- Tap + and select GamePigeon.
- Choose a game, such as 8-Ball, Chess, Checkers, Mini Golf, Basketball, or Four in a Row.
- Use the on-screen controls to make the opening move or set up the match.
- Tap Send. The other player receives the game message.
- When your opponent replies, tap the new game message in the conversation to continue.
If the recipient is prompted to get GamePigeon, they must install it before taking a turn. Do not assume every title behaves identically or that every participant configuration is supported.
Play a game someone sent you
- Open the conversation containing the game message.
- Tap the game preview or the pending move.
- Install or enable the associated iMessage app if prompted.
- Take your turn using the game controls.
- Tap Send to return the move.
If an old game message does nothing, open the app first from +, then try the message again.

Games you can try
The U.S. App Store listing viewed on August 18, 2026 names these GamePigeon options (the catalog, rules, and player counts can change):
- Pool and sports: 8-Ball, 9-Ball, Mini Golf, Basketball, Shuffleboard, Archery, Darts
- Board and strategy: Chess, Checkers, Mancala, Reversi, Gomoku, Sea Battle, Tanks, Dots and Boxes
- Word games: Anagrams, Word Hunt, Word Bites, Filler
- Quick casual games: Cup Pong, Four in a Row, Knockout, 20 Questions, Crazy 8
GamePigeon was listed as free with optional purchases and a 13+ rating in the U.S. storefront. The listing displayed GamePigeon+ at $4.99 and other optional packs; prices and availability vary by country, tax, storefront, and date. Its visible version history showed version 2.2.6 dated September 16, 2024, which is not proof that it is the latest version in every region.
Find other iMessage games
- Open a conversation in Messages.
- Tap +, then Store.
- Browse or search for games.
- Check the listing’s player information, age rating, compatibility, reviews, and in-app purchases before downloading.
Troubleshooting
Messages are green
Verify Settings > Apps > Messages > iMessage, then check Send & Receive for the correct phone number or email address. The recipient must also have an active iMessage setup. In a group, one non-iMessage participant can make the thread use MMS, SMS, or RCS instead (Apple’s group-message guidance).
GamePigeon is missing
- Tap + and swipe up through the app list.
- Tap Store and search for GamePigeon.
- Confirm it is installed.
- Check Settings > Apps > Messages > iMessage Apps and enable it.
- Close and reopen Messages; restart the iPhone if necessary.
- Install available iOS or app updates.
The Store option is missing
Expand the app drawer after tapping +, update iOS, and confirm you are signed in to the App Store. If the device is managed by Screen Time or family controls, downloads may require approval.

The game message will not open
Check that the conversation is blue, the app is installed and enabled, and both devices have a data connection. Open the game from + first, then ask the sender to start a new game message. Try another title to determine whether the problem is app-wide or game-specific. Reinstalling can risk an in-progress match, so treat it as a last resort.
The other player cannot join
They need a compatible Apple device, iMessage enabled, a data connection, and any required app or parental-control permission. GamePigeon is explicitly “Only for iMessage,” so it is not a solution for an Android or green-bubble conversation.
A new iPhone uses the wrong thread or number
Check Send & Receive, make sure the intended number or email is selected, and allow iMessage activation to complete. If activation or delivery remains broken, follow Apple’s troubleshooting guidance at Apple Support.

A group made entirely of iMessage users is the most compatible setup, but each game may limit the number of players. Mixed groups can fall back to MMS, SMS, or RCS. Review GamePigeon’s 13+ rating and optional purchases before allowing children to use it. Screen Time, Ask to Buy, and Family Sharing controls can require approval for downloads or in-app purchases.

Disable or remove an iMessage game
Open Settings > Apps > Messages > iMessage Apps and turn the app off. Exact deletion controls can differ by iOS version; you can also return to the iMessage Store to redownload an app later. Disabling or deleting an app may affect access to an active match.
Frequently asked questions
Can I play iMessage games with Android users?
Not through the standard iMessage-app flow. Use a compatible cross-platform game instead.
Do both players need an iPhone?
They need Apple devices capable of using iMessage for iMessage-only games; the individual app determines further compatibility.
Do both players always need GamePigeon?
The recipient must install it if Messages prompts them or the game will not open. Requirements can vary by title.

Can I play without Wi-Fi?
Yes, if cellular data is available and allowed. iMessage uses data, and your carrier plan may charge for it.
Are all iMessage games free?
No. Some are paid, and free apps may contain in-app purchases. GamePigeon is free to download with optional purchases in the cited U.S. listing.
Can I play in a group chat?
Often, if the group remains an iMessage thread and the game supports that number of players. Mixed groups may not.
