Messenger’s currently documented way to play a game together is during a video call. Start a call with at least one other person, choose Play together, pick a game, then select Start game. The feature is not available to every account, device, or region. If you remember launching a game from a controller icon in a text chat, that was Messenger’s older Instant Games feature; it may no longer appear in your app.
What “games on Messenger” means now
There are three different features people may mean when they search for Messenger games:
- Play together: Games launched during an active Messenger video call. This is the current route documented by Meta’s Messenger Help Center.
- Instant Games in chats: The older experience that let people launch games from a controller icon beneath the message field. Meta introduced it in 2016, but that announcement is historical documentation, not confirmation that the button or original catalog remains available today. See Meta’s launch announcement.
- Facebook Play games: A separate Facebook games area. Its route is Feed → Play games → find a title → Play game; it is not the normal way to launch a game inside a Messenger chat. Meta’s instructions are in its Facebook gaming help page.
For a shared game inside Messenger, look for Play together while on a video call. Meta says the call needs at least two people. Availability varies by area and device, and the feature remains in development.

- Open the Messenger app and start or join a video call with at least one other person.
- In the call controls, look for and tap Play together.
- Choose a game from the games shown in your app.
- Tap Start game.
- Review and accept any permission prompts, then follow the game’s on-screen controls.
The menu layout and available games can vary. Meta’s current help page confirms Android support but does not publish a complete, guaranteed game list.

Play games on Messenger on iPhone or iPad
- Open Messenger and start or join a video call with another person.
- Open Play together in the call controls, if it is available.
- Select a game, then tap Start game.
- Review any permission request and use the controls shown in the game.
Meta documents support for the Messenger app on iPhone. On iPad, use these steps only if the current Messenger app exposes the feature; the documentation does not establish identical availability on every iPad or app layout.
Play on a computer
Meta documents Play together on a computer through Messenger web access:
- Open Messenger in a browser and start or join a video call with at least one other person.
- Select Play together in the call controls.
- Choose a game and select Start game.
- Accept any permission prompts and follow the game’s instructions.
Meta says the experience works best in Chrome. Its browser guidance also identifies Chrome and Microsoft Edge as browsers that support end-to-end encrypted Messenger chats; other browsers may not show all chat history or support calls. See Meta’s browser guidance.

Web-address caveat: Meta’s help page still names messenger.com, but the desktop web destination may redirect or change. If messenger.com does not open Messenger for you, try the current Facebook Messages web experience available to your account, or use the Messenger mobile app. The exact desktop route may vary during Meta’s web-product changes.

Can you launch a game from an ordinary text chat?
Not reliably through the old controller-icon method. In its 2016 announcement, Meta described opening a conversation and tapping a game-controller icon beneath the message field to launch an Instant Game. That was the original chat-based experience; it should not be treated as a current, universal instruction. The currently documented Messenger method is Play together during a video call. If you remember the old button and cannot find it, it may simply no longer be available in your version of Messenger.
What games are available?
Use the game list displayed in Play together as the best guide to what is available to your account. The current Meta help page does not provide a definitive catalog, and availability can vary.
For context only, the original 2016 Instant Games launch named titles including PAC-MAN, SPACE INVADERS, EverWing, Galaga, TRACK & FIELD 100M, and Words With Friends: Frenzy. Those are historical examples, not a list of games guaranteed to work in Messenger now. Meta later reported that the older Instant Games catalog had expanded, but historical catalog sizes do not establish what is available in 2026.
If “Play together” is missing
A missing option does not automatically mean Messenger is broken. Meta says the feature is not available in every area or on every device, and availability can depend on rollout or account eligibility. Check these points in order:

- Update Messenger. Install the latest version available for your device. Meta recommends keeping Messenger updated; its troubleshooting guidance also covers basic app and device checks.
- Check the call. Make sure at least two people are connected. If it is a group call, try ending it and starting a one-to-one call.
- Restart the call. Leave and rejoin or start a fresh call, then check the call controls again.
- Try another supported surface. If the option is missing on desktop, check the Messenger mobile app. On a computer, try Chrome first, then Edge.
- Consider regional or account availability. If the option remains absent, the feature may not have rolled out to your device, area, or account. The available documentation does not provide a complete compatibility list.
- Check permissions if the game launches but does not work. Review the game’s prompts and allow only permissions you are comfortable granting.
- Reinstall only as a later step. Before reinstalling, make sure you know your login details and have configured any secure-storage options you rely on. Reinstalling cannot make an unreleased or unsupported feature available.
If the game opens but another participant cannot join, both people should update Messenger and try a fresh call. A browser difference, regional or account availability, or a game-specific permission may also be involved; Meta does not publish a full participant compatibility matrix.
Privacy and connected games
Read permission prompts before accepting them. If a game asks to connect to your Facebook account, review what information it will receive and whether it can post or retain game-related information.
Facebook’s connected-app controls are under Settings & privacy → Settings → Apps and websites. Meta explains how to manage connected apps and games. Turning off the broader apps, websites, and games integration can affect Facebook Login and connected game information; Meta warns that saved details such as favorites or high scores may be lost and might not be recoverable. Read its integration guidance before changing that setting.
If built-in Messenger games are unavailable
You can still make a call and play a separate mobile or browser game at the same time, or use screen sharing where your calling setup supports it. For games you want to play on Facebook rather than inside Messenger, open Facebook Feed and choose Play games. The Facebook route and Messenger’s in-call games are separate features.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play Messenger games without a video call?
The currently documented Messenger route is Play together during a video call with at least two people. The older controller-icon Instant Games path was a separate chat feature and may not be available in current Messenger.
Why did the game-controller icon disappear?
It belonged to the older Instant Games experience described in Meta’s 2016 launch announcement. Its presence is not guaranteed in current Messenger; Meta’s current documented route is Play together during a video call.
Do both people need the same type of phone?
Meta documents Play together on iPhone and Android, but does not publish a complete device-compatibility matrix. The feature may not be available to every participant, device, or region.

Are Messenger games free?
The cited Meta help page explains how to start Play together but does not give a universal pricing rule for every game. Check the game’s listing and any in-app prompts before playing.
Why is Play together unavailable in my country?
Meta says the feature is not available in every area or on every device. Its help page does not give a complete region list, so an absent option may reflect availability or rollout rather than a problem with your account.
Can I play Facebook games through Messenger?
Not necessarily. Facebook’s Play games area is a separate feature accessed from Facebook Feed; it is not the same as launching a game through Messenger’s Play together controls.

Try leaving and restarting the call, updating Messenger, and checking your connection. If the problem persists, try another supported device or browser. The available Meta guidance does not specify a game-freeze recovery procedure.
Does Messenger save game scores?
Score saving depends on the game and how it connects to your account. Meta warns that turning off app, website, and game integration may affect saved information such as favorites or high scores, which may not be recoverable.
Are games available in encrypted chats?
Meta’s browser documentation discusses encrypted chats and browser support, but does not establish that Play together is available in every encrypted conversation. Check the call controls in your current app; availability may vary.
