You can try Google’s Halloween game The Great Ghoul Duel on its official 2022 Doodle page. Select Play to launch it in a browser; Google presents it as a Doodle, not a conventional app-store download. The archive page offers a way to start, but it does not guarantee that public matchmaking will be available every time.
What is The Great Ghoul Duel?
It’s a light, Halloween-themed multiplayer arcade game built around a simple team contest: collect wandering spirit flames and return them to your team’s base. Green and purple teams have four players each, and a round lasts two minutes. Opponents can intercept flames you’re carrying before you get them home. Google’s 2022 Doodle page describes the rules and identifies that release as a sequel to the original.
The game is easy to pick up and its ghosts are cute rather than designed as graphic horror. Expect quick matches, not a deep progression system or ranked competition.
How to start and play
- Open Google’s official Halloween 2022 Doodle archive page.
- Select Play and wait for the game to load. Follow the instructions shown in the game.
- Choose public matchmaking or the private-game option.
- Move through the map, collect spirit flames, and return them to your team’s base to score.
- Keep an eye on opponents while carrying flames: they can intercept your haul before it is safely returned.
- Keep collecting until the two-minute round ends; the team that returns the most flames wins.
Can you play with friends?
Yes. Google’s 2022 page describes private games hosted with an invitation link. The host can invite up to seven friends or family members, making eight players in all—enough for two teams of four. The page also offers play with randomized players. Private play depends on invitees joining; if someone cannot get in, ask the host to create and share a fresh invitation link.

Controls and power-ups
Google’s archive description does not give a definitive control chart for every device or version. On desktop, try the arrow keys if the game’s prompt shows them; on a touch device, use the on-screen controls if offered. Follow the in-game prompt rather than assuming the 2018 and 2022 interfaces behave identically. A Forbes guide to the 2018 launch version reported touch, arrow-key, or mouse movement depending on platform, but that is not confirmation of the current 2022 controls.
Google confirms that the sequel added power-ups, but its page does not list them all. For the original 2018 game, Google specifically names speed boosts and night vision among the powers. Treat those as examples from the original, not a complete list for the sequel. Use a power-up when it helps you change route, escape an opponent, or get a delivery home rather than collecting one automatically.

Ways to improve your team’s score
- Return flames regularly instead of carrying an oversized haul far from base, where it is easier to intercept.
- Learn the routes between flame clusters and your base so you spend less time retracing ground.
- With friends, coordinate: some players can collect while others watch routes or pressure opponents.
- Adapt your path when a power-up appears; its value depends on whether it helps your team deliver or disrupt a delivery.
These are practical applications of the game’s documented collect, return, and intercept mechanics—not a guarantee of a win.

Google’s archive pages document the 2018 original and the 2022 sequel. If an old link takes you to 2018, it is a separate release rather than another name for the sequel. Google Cloud’s account of the original’s infrastructure also describes how multiplayer Doodles use matchmaking, but it does not establish that either version’s service will always be available: Google Cloud on multiplayer Doodles.

What to do if the game won’t load or matchmaking stalls
- Start from the official 2022 archive page rather than an old social post or fan-hosted copy.
- If loading stalls, refresh the page and try a current browser with JavaScript enabled.
- If the game frame does not appear, temporarily disable an aggressive script-blocking or privacy extension, or try another browser or device.
- If public matchmaking stays on a waiting screen, try again later or use private play with people you invite. A wait alone does not show that the game has been permanently discontinued.
- If a private invitation fails, ask the host to generate and resend the link.
Google’s pages confirm a Play option and multiplayer design, not continuous matchmaking, server uptime, or compatibility with every device. The Doodle runs in a browser, and Google Cloud describes multiplayer Doodles as browser or mobile-device experiences; that is not a promise that every browser configuration will work.

Google presents the game as a browser Doodle, and the archive page does not indicate a purchase or subscription. It is a good fit if you want a short, casual Halloween match, especially with friends in a private lobby. The experience is more lightweight than a full-scale multiplayer game, and public matchmaking may be less dependable than a hosted game with invited players.
