Half-Life: Alyx has no official flat-screen mode: Steam labels it “VR Only.” You can try the community-made Half-Life: Alyx NoVR driver, which aims to let you play with a keyboard and mouse, but it is an unofficial workaround that requires SteamVR software and manual setup. Expect compromises, not a standard desktop version.
What Valve officially supports
Valve describes Half-Life: Alyx as a game built from the ground up for virtual reality. Its store page marks the game “VR Only” and lists SteamVR among the requirements. Valve’s examples of core interactions include leaning to aim, searching shelves by hand, manipulating tools to hack interfaces, and physically handling objects. Valve does offer seated and standing play environments as well as roomscale, with teleport, shift, and continuous analog-stick movement options. Those choices can make supported VR play more accessible if you do not want to stand or move around a room, but they do not turn the game into a monitor-and-mouse experience. How the community NoVR option works
The community project Half-Life: Alyx NoVR supplies a SteamVR driver intended to let players use keyboard and mouse without wearing a headset. Its maintainer describes the result as an unusual way to play rather than a conventional flat-screen FPS, and notes that some sections can be demanding even when they are passable with patience. “Without a headset” does not mean “without VR software.” The documented setup calls for installing SteamVR, putting the driver’s hlalyx folder in SteamVR’s drivers directory, changing resolution settings in the driver’s configuration, calibrating a SteamVR room, launching SteamVR before the game, and adjusting the game’s movement option. Before you install it
- Check the current instructions and files. Driver setup and compatibility can change. Follow the latest instructions in the project repository rather than relying on an old guide or assuming a single universal install recipe.
- Expect to troubleshoot. The project’s documentation covers red screens, calibration, window focus, resolution, controls, and spectator-view issues. It also suggests console commands or supplied saves for difficult passages.
- Plan for interaction differences. Puzzles, object handling, and combat were designed around VR. Keyboard and mouse controls are a translation of those interactions, and the project warns that some moments are difficult.
- Be aware of version-specific behavior. The maintainer notes that in recent game versions the camera may fail to rotate with the hands.
Because the driver alters the normal launch and control setup, read its README and setup instructions before changing files. The project documentation is the authority for its own current procedure; Valve’s official support description remains the VR route.

If your priority is seeing the story and you are comfortable tinkering with an unofficial project, the NoVR driver is the available community route. If you want the interactions as Valve designed them, use SteamVR-compatible VR hardware.
