Use the control pad to choose a high or low shot and B to select a club. The game has two 18-hole courses and three modes: Stroke Play, Nassau Game, and Practice.
This guide covers the 1988 NES game. SNK also released an arcade version, whose hardware controls differ; the arcade manual is separate.
NES controls and the three-part swing
The NES manual identifies the control pad, Select, Start, A, and B. For the basic swing, A advances through three stages of one shot:
- Press A to begin the backswing.
- Press A again at the top of the swing.
- Press A a third time at impact.
Use up or down on the control pad to choose a high or low shot. Press B to open club selection. A quick press of A with left or right immediately after contact applies backspin, according to the game description.

Timing alone does not determine distance: club choice, golfer, lie, and course conditions also affect the shot. The available sources describe the controls but do not establish guaranteed distances for particular button timing.

Nassau Game
This is a points-based contest between players. The game description mentions presses, but does not establish the complete press rule, so the precise rule should be checked in the printed manual rather than inferred.
Practice
Practice lets one player work on a selected hole. It is a way to learn the swing or try a difficult hole without playing a complete round.

Courses, lies, and hazards
The NES game offers an American course and a Japanese course, each with 18 holes. The listed terrain and ball conditions include tee, fairway, green, out of bounds, water, light and hard sand, and super, light, heavy, and deep rough. The lie is worth checking before choosing a club or shot: a ball in sand or rough is a different situation from one on the fairway.
The manual’s on-screen diagrams identify information such as wind, distance to the pin, ball status, hole layout, stroke count, and club or yard information. Use these displays together when planning a shot rather than treating the swing meter or button timing as the only consideration.

A practical first-round routine
- Choose Stroke Play for a full round, Nassau for a points contest, or Practice to focus on one hole.
- Select the American or Japanese course; both offer 18 holes.
- Check the hole layout, wind, distance to the pin, ball status, and current club information shown on screen.
- Choose a club with B, set a high or low shot with up or down, then complete the backswing, top, and impact with three A presses.
- After contact, use the quick A-plus-left-or-right input if you want to apply backspin.
