To play a local video file on YouTube Live, add it to a streaming encoder’s outgoing video program, connect the encoder to a YouTube Live event with its stream URL and key, check the preview, and start streaming. YouTube receives the encoder’s feed; it does not play a file from your computer directly. The exact controls for adding and looping a file depend on the encoder you use.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
  • A local video file you can legally livestream, plus an encoder that can include a media file in its outgoing program.
  • A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the stream settings you choose.
  • Access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, where you can create or open the event and retrieve its stream URL and key.

YouTube’s encoder workflow is designed for computer-produced video and advanced productions. See YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.

Set up the local video in your encoder

Add the file to the outgoing program

In your encoder, add the local video as a media or video source and place it in the scene or program that will be sent to YouTube. This is the key distinction: selecting a file on your computer is not enough unless that file is included in the encoder’s outgoing feed.

The precise menu names and controls vary by encoder, so use that application’s current documentation for the file-source steps. Before continuing, confirm that the correct file is selected, the picture is framed as intended, and its audio is routed into the program. Check what happens when playback reaches the end: depending on the encoder, it may stop, hold a frame, or loop only if you enable a loop option.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Decide whether the file should play once or repeat

If you want a single playback, make sure the encoder’s behavior at the end of the file suits your event. For continuous playback, enable looping if the encoder supports it, or arrange the playlist or media sources using the encoder’s documented controls. Do not assume a file automatically repeats. Test the ending and restart behavior before the public stream.

Connect the encoder to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the live event.
  2. Copy the event’s stream URL and stream key. In your encoder, enter them in the server/service and stream-key fields, or use its YouTube integration if available.
  3. Keep the stream key private. YouTube uses it to identify where your encoder sends the feed and to accept that feed; anyone with access to it may be able to stream to your event.
  4. Start the encoder’s connection and wait for YouTube to receive the signal. Review the Live Control Room preview before making the event public or telling viewers to join.

Choose video, audio, and connection settings

Use YouTube’s recommended protocol and encoding guidance

YouTube generally recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video encoding, up to 60 frames per second, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. These are YouTube Help specifications, with no publication year stated on the page. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for current resolution-specific bitrate recommendations.

Match quality to your upload connection

Choose the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate based on the source video and the upload capacity available where the encoder runs. A higher-quality file does not guarantee a higher-quality live stream if the encoder cannot send it reliably. YouTube recommends maintaining about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream’s bitrate. Its page does not state a publication year for that recommendation.

Use YouTube’s resolution-specific guidance rather than guessing a bitrate, and avoid selecting a setting that consumes nearly all available upload bandwidth. If the stream health indicator reports instability, lower the bitrate or other demanding settings and test again.

When HLS may be appropriate

RTMPS is the general recommendation. HLS can be appropriate with compatible encoders for specialized workflows, including certain HDR or codec cases, but it sends video in segments and has higher latency than continuous RTMP-style delivery. YouTube’s HLS requirements include TS segments of 1–4 seconds, rolling playlists with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte-range support. See YouTube’s HLS setup guide before choosing this protocol.

Test the preview, then start the live event

  1. Run a test with audio and movement similar to what viewers will see. Confirm that the file plays, the audio is audible and synchronized, and any intended loop or playlist transition works.
  2. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages before going live. YouTube recommends checking that the event is accessible from the channel and watch pages.
  3. Start the encoder when the feed is ready. Monitor the stream’s audio, video, and health during the event; correct problems at the encoder rather than assuming the local file itself is at fault.
  4. To finish, stop the stream from the encoder and confirm in YouTube Studio that the event has ended. YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; verify current archive behavior and limits before relying on an archive.

YouTube’s operational recommendations and workflow are described in its streaming tips and encoder guide.

Common problems and what to check

Symptom Likely check What to do
YouTube is not receiving a signal The event’s stream URL or key may be missing or entered in the wrong field. Compare the encoder’s server/service and key fields with the values for the selected event in Live Control Room. Keep the key private.
The preview is blank or shows the wrong picture The file may not be in the outgoing scene/program, or another source may cover it. Check the encoder’s active scene and source arrangement using its current documentation, then confirm the corrected picture in YouTube’s preview.
There is no sound, or the sound is wrong The file’s audio may not be routed into the outgoing program, or the wrong audio source may be selected. Check the encoder’s audio routing and test playback before going live.
The file ends and playback stops Looping may not be enabled, or the encoder may stop the source at the end. Check the encoder’s documented end-of-playback and looping controls; test the transition before the event.
The stream health is unstable The selected bitrate may exceed reliable upload capacity, or there may be too little bandwidth headroom. Use YouTube’s resolution-specific settings guidance, reduce the stream bitrate if needed, and retest with more upload headroom.
Viewers cannot find or access the event The event’s visibility or access may not match your intended audience. Check the event settings and verify access from the channel and watch pages before sharing it.

Check rights before streaming a file

Having a video file on your computer does not by itself give you permission to livestream it. You are responsible for the necessary rights for the live content and any archive, including relevant music rights. YouTube’s livestream terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Read YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions. Whether a particular use is covered depends on the applicable rights and licenses.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing on YouTube without leaving an encoder computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos and playlists on YouTube.
