You can play Microsoft Flight Simulator on a Mac through Xbox Cloud Gaming in a supported browser; there is no native macOS edition. Cloud play requires Game Pass Ultimate, a Microsoft account, a supported region and a reliable internet connection. If you want to install the simulator locally, its current PC edition requires Windows, and running Windows virtually on a Mac is not officially guaranteed to work well.
Choose how you want to play
The practical choice is between streaming the Xbox version and attempting to run the Windows PC version in a virtual machine. The Steam build is not a Mac app: its published requirements specify Windows 10 and DirectX 12, with no macOS listing. Microsoft’s platform information likewise lists Windows PC, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Cloud Gaming, but not macOS. Steam’s Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 listing and Microsoft’s platform FAQ describe the supported platforms.

Play through Xbox Cloud Gaming
This is the verified Mac-compatible route. Microsoft says Microsoft Flight Simulator is playable through Xbox Cloud Gaming on supported devices and browsers, and that cloud play requires Game Pass Ultimate. A PC Game Pass subscription by itself covers the Windows PC version, not the cloud entitlement needed for this Mac browser route. Check Microsoft’s Cloud Gaming FAQ for its current access details.
- Open Xbox Cloud Gaming in a supported browser and sign in with your Microsoft account.
- On the page, use “Search for games, people & more” or browse “CLOUD GAMING,” “All games” and “See all games.” Search for “Microsoft Flight Simulator” or “Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024.”
- Select the game and use the launch control shown for it. Availability and launch options can vary by region and account eligibility.
- Connect a supported controller or use another input option that the Xbox version and cloud session recognize, then test controls before starting a long flight.
This streams the Xbox version rather than installing the Steam PC build on macOS. Microsoft says the Xbox and PC versions share a multiplayer world and services, but this does not make Steam purchases or add-ons interchangeable with Xbox content. Check account, region and connection requirements
- Microsoft account: Microsoft requires an account for Flight Simulator services; the Steam listing also identifies Xbox Live as a required third-party account.
- Cloud entitlement: Game Pass Ultimate is required for the documented cloud-gaming route. Do not assume a PC-only subscription provides Mac browser access.
- Region: Cloud gaming is not available everywhere. Microsoft warns that availability varies by region and Xbox services may not be available in all regions. Check the Xbox cloud page while signed in from your location.
- Internet: The cloud route streams gameplay, so it is not an offline option. A fast, stable connection matters; the PC edition’s published bandwidth figures are not a promise of cloud-streaming performance.
What to know before buying a PC copy
The current local-install edition is Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, released on November 19, 2024. Steam lists Standard, Deluxe, Premium Deluxe and Aviator editions. Buying any Steam edition does not unlock Xbox access through Xbox Play Anywhere, and Steam DLC does not transfer to Xbox. If cross-platform access matters, Microsoft says a Microsoft Store PC purchase is an Xbox Play Anywhere purchase; a Steam purchase is not. Confirm the store and platform before you buy, using the platform FAQ and Xbox FAQ.
Microsoft publishes these Windows PC requirements for the Steam version. They describe the local Windows game, not the processing power needed for a browser stream.

These are the requirements published on the Steam listing; they do not establish that a Mac running a Windows virtual machine will meet the game’s graphics or performance needs.

Can you use Parallels Desktop?
Parallels can virtualize Windows on Apple-silicon Macs, but that is not native Flight Simulator support. Parallels’ requirements dated July 3, 2026 list Apple M1 through M5 families and at least 16 GB of storage for a Windows 11 guest; internet access is needed for activation, updates and selected features. Those Parallels requirements do not certify that Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 will run correctly in the virtual machine. The simulator’s own published Windows 10 and DirectX 12 requirements still apply, and Microsoft does not guarantee compatibility or acceptable performance in Parallels. Check Parallels’ system requirements before installing, and do not buy the game or virtualization software on the assumption that this route is supported by Microsoft.

Controls, add-ons and offline play
Flight controls
Microsoft lists Xbox gamepad, keyboard and mouse, Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS One, Thrustmaster T.Flight Rudder and HORI HOTAS Flight Stick for Xbox One among supported Xbox inputs. That list does not establish that every yoke, throttle, rudder pedal or HOTAS connected to a Mac will be recognized through a browser stream. If a specific cockpit setup is essential, verify that the cloud/Xbox version supports it before relying on it.
Progress and add-ons
Microsoft/Asobo-produced DLC and progress can transfer across supported platforms, while transfer of third-party DLC is decided by each developer. Steam DLC does not work on Xbox. A Steam purchase therefore should not be treated as a route to carrying its add-ons into a cloud session.

Offline use
Cloud gaming requires an active connection and cannot serve as an offline Mac installation. Microsoft’s offline instructions for the simulator also require launching while online first, and offline functionality requires downloaded offline scenery on Xbox. See the Xbox FAQ.

Common Mac setup misconceptions
- “The Steam version runs directly on Mac.” It does not have a macOS build; Steam lists Windows 10 and DirectX 12 requirements.
- “PC Game Pass is enough for cloud play.” Microsoft requires Game Pass Ultimate for the documented cloud route.
- “There’s a Terminal command to launch it.” Microsoft documents browser-based cloud access, not a Mac command-line installation or launch command.
