Yes, you can try Minecraft legally without immediately buying a permanent copy—but the current full game is not generally free on Windows PC, Mac, PS5, or Xbox. Your legitimate choices are an official time-limited trial, access through a qualifying Game Pass subscription, the old Minecraft Classic browser version, or Minecraft Education if you qualify through a school or organization.
The quickest answer:
- Windows PC: Use the official Java or Bedrock trial, or play the full PC version through qualifying Game Pass access.
- Mac: Use the Java Edition demo. Minecraft Classic is a permanently free but very old browser version.
- PS5: Look for the official Minecraft PS5 — Free Trial listing in the PlayStation Store.
- Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S: Check whether Minecraft is included with Game Pass Premium or Ultimate. The official free-trial page currently does not list a standalone Xbox trial.
This guide uses the United States as its default market. Storefront prices and promotions below were checked on August 10, 2026 and can change by date, account, region, and plan.
What “free Minecraft” actually means
There are several different things people mean when they say Minecraft is free:
- Free trial: Temporary access to the standard game, normally restricted to single-player Survival and a limited play period.
- Subscription access: Game Pass can include the full game while the subscription remains active. This avoids a separate purchase, but it is not permanent ownership.
- Minecraft Classic: A free official browser version based on the 2009-era game. It has only 32 block types and lacks most modern Minecraft systems.
- Minecraft Education: A separate educational edition with school licensing, classroom features, and restrictions that do not apply to the normal consumer game.
- Free skins, add-ons, or Marketplace items: These are optional content; they do not make the base game free.
Pirated launchers and cracked copies are not legitimate alternatives and can also expose players to malware, stolen accounts, and corrupted save files. This guide covers only official routes.

How to play Minecraft for free on Windows PC
Windows is the most flexible platform because it officially supports both Minecraft editions. You can test Java Edition, Bedrock Edition—listed as Minecraft for Windows—or use Game Pass for subscription access to the full PC game.
Option 1: Try Java Edition
- Open the official Minecraft free-trial page.
- Under Minecraft Java Edition, choose the Windows 10/11 download.
- Install or open the Minecraft Launcher.
- Sign in with a Microsoft account, or create one if necessary.
- Select Java Edition in the launcher.
- Choose the demo or trial option and launch the game.
The Java demo is single-player Survival. Commands are disabled, and ordinary online multiplayer servers are unavailable. The Java documentation says the demo lasts about five in-game days, or approximately 100 minutes. LAN play may be available, but only one demo account can join the LAN game.
Option 2: Try Bedrock Edition
- Return to the official free-trial page.
- Under Minecraft Bedrock Edition, select Windows 10/11.
- Install the Minecraft Launcher or Minecraft for Windows as prompted.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account being used for the trial.
- Choose the Bedrock or Minecraft for Windows option.
- Start the trial.
Expect roughly 90–100 minutes of play, depending on the edition, device, and region. Mojang’s general trial page says approximately 100 minutes, while its dedicated Bedrock support page says 90 minutes. The Bedrock trial is single-player Survival, disables commands, and does not include multiplayer or Realms.
Option 3: Use PC Game Pass
Game Pass is the practical way to access the full modern PC game without purchasing Minecraft separately. It is subscription access, not a free permanent copy. When the subscription ends, access to the Game Pass version ends unless you buy Minecraft.
- Sign in to the Xbox app or Microsoft Store with the Microsoft account that owns the Game Pass subscription.
- Search for Minecraft.
- Confirm that the listing says it is included with your active plan.
- Install the Minecraft Launcher or Minecraft for Windows.
- Open the launcher and select the edition available through the subscription.
- Keep the subscription active to retain access.
As checked in the US on August 10, 2026, the Xbox storefront showed PC Game Pass at $13.99 per month, with a promotional $1-for-14-days offer displayed at the time. Premium was shown at $14.99 per month, also with a displayed $1-for-14-days promotion, while Ultimate was shown at $22.99 per month. Promotions can be account-specific, unavailable to existing or previous subscribers, and subject to change. Subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled.

How to play Minecraft for free on Mac
Mac officially supports Java Edition, not the regular Windows Bedrock Edition. That means the normal consumer route is the Java demo, not Minecraft for Windows.
Option 1: Use the Java demo
- Open the official Minecraft free-trial page.
- Under Minecraft Java Edition, select Mac.
- Download and install the Mac launcher.
- Sign in with a Microsoft account.
- Select Java Edition.
- Launch the demo.
The demo provides approximately five in-game days, or about 100 minutes, of single-player Survival. Commands are disabled and online servers are unavailable. Limited LAN play may be possible under the Java demo rules.

Option 2: Play Minecraft Classic in a browser
If you want a free option that does not expire, open classic.minecraft.net. Minecraft Classic is an official browser version of the original 2009-era game, not the current Minecraft release.

- Open classic.minecraft.net in a compatible browser.
- Use a keyboard; the official page lists a keyboard as a requirement.
- Allow the browser capabilities required by the game.
- Start building in the Classic world.
Classic has only 32 block types, old mechanics, original bugs, and no modern survival experience, updates, mobs, Marketplace, or current cross-platform functionality. It is best treated as a historical or nostalgic sample rather than a free replacement for modern Minecraft.
Option 3: Minecraft Education
Minecraft Education is available on Mac and can provide a free trial for an eligible school, Microsoft 365 Education, or Entra ID account. Demo lessons can also be launched without an account in some circumstances.

How to play Minecraft for free on PS5
The PlayStation Store currently lists a free trial for the PS5 version of Minecraft. Availability can vary by region and account, so use the official listing rather than an old search result.
- Open the PlayStation Store on your PS5, or visit the official Minecraft PlayStation page.
- Search for Minecraft.
- Open Minecraft PS5 — Standard Edition.
- Choose Free Trial, then select Add to Library.
- Download and launch the trial.
- Sign in with a PlayStation Network account.
- Link a Microsoft account if you need Microsoft-connected friends, cross-play, Realms, or other cross-platform features.
The PS5 trial is a time-limited Bedrock trial, not a permanently free copy. Mojang’s official pages have conflicting general duration wording, so expect roughly 90–100 minutes unless the store or trial itself states otherwise. Do not expect the trial to function as ordinary online multiplayer; the Bedrock trial is restricted to single-player Survival, with commands and Realms unavailable.
The PlayStation Store also has a separate PS4 Minecraft Demo entry in some regions. Do not assume that a PS4 demo listing and the PS5 free-trial listing are the same product.

Is PlayStation Plus required?
The PS5 store listing does not indicate that PlayStation Plus is required for offline single-player play. However, PlayStation Plus is required for online play in Minecraft. PlayStation Plus Essential, Extra, and Premium all provide online multiplayer access generally. Check the current PlayStation Plus support page for the latest plan terms.
How to play Minecraft for free on Xbox
Do not promise an Xbox demo based on outdated guides. Mojang’s current official free-trial page lists Bedrock trials for Windows 10/11, PlayStation, and Android, but does not list Xbox as a supported Bedrock trial download. That does not rule out a future or account-specific promotion; it means a standalone Xbox trial is not currently verified from the official listing.
Use Game Pass Premium or Ultimate
- Open the Microsoft Store or Xbox interface.
- Search for Minecraft.
- Check whether the listing says Included with Game Pass for your current plan.
- If you have Game Pass Premium or Ultimate, install Minecraft.
- Launch it using the Microsoft/Xbox account connected to the subscription.
As checked in the US on August 10, 2026, the current Xbox Minecraft listing showed the game included with Game Pass Premium and Ultimate. The store listed Minecraft for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S at $19.99. Game Pass prices and catalogs can change, so verify the listing before paying for a subscription.
Essential does not necessarily include Minecraft
The Xbox store page separately states that online console multiplayer requires Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate. But the page does not list the Minecraft game itself as included with Essential. In practical terms:

- Essential: Provides the required online console multiplayer access, but you should not assume it includes Minecraft.
- Premium: Lists Minecraft as included.
- Ultimate: Lists Minecraft as included.
If you have Essential only, you may still need to purchase Minecraft. If you access Minecraft through Premium or Ultimate, you retain access only while that subscription remains active. Game Pass promotions may appear at a reduced price, but they are not guaranteed and normally convert to recurring billing unless canceled.
What do the official free trials include?
The trials are designed to let you sample ordinary Minecraft—not to provide the complete game indefinitely or enable a full multiplayer experience.

The duration discrepancy comes directly from Mojang’s documentation: the general free-trial page describes both trials as approximately 100 minutes, while the Bedrock support page says 90 minutes. The Java demo support page says approximately 100 minutes. For planning purposes, expect roughly 90–100 minutes rather than one universal exact number.
Do free Minecraft trials require an account?
Yes. PC and Mac trial players need a Microsoft account. Xbox uses the Microsoft/Xbox account associated with the console. PS5 players need a PlayStation Network account and may link a Microsoft account for cross-platform friends, purchases, Realms, and cross-play.
Use the same account throughout setup. Signing in with one account to claim a trial and another account in the launcher or console is a common reason that a trial, purchase, or subscription entitlement does not appear. Mojang explains platform account requirements in its accounts support article.
Can you play with friends for free?
Usually not through the official free trial. The Java and Bedrock trials restrict normal online multiplayer, and Realms are not included. Game Pass or a purchased copy can provide the full multiplayer game, but console online-access rules still apply.
- Windows Bedrock: Can play with Xbox and PlayStation Bedrock players, assuming compatible versions, accounts, and multiplayer permissions.
- Mac Java: Cannot directly join ordinary Bedrock worlds on Xbox or PS5. Mac Java players need Java-compatible multiplayer.
- PS5: Online Minecraft play requires PlayStation Plus.
- Xbox: Online console multiplayer requires Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate. Essential supplies the online multiplayer entitlement but does not necessarily include the game.
- Everyone: Players must use compatible editions and current compatible versions. Child accounts may also need multiplayer enabled through parental controls.

Minecraft Classic: the permanently free browser option
Minecraft Classic is the clearest answer if your definition of free means no purchase, no subscription, and no trial expiration. Open classic.minecraft.net in a browser that supports WebGL and WebRTC, then use a keyboard to play.
But Classic is not modern Minecraft. It is a 2009-era creative building experience with 32 block types, old bugs, and rudimentary mechanics. It does not provide the current survival loop, modern mobs, crafting systems, updates, Marketplace, or the normal Java/Bedrock cross-platform experience. Minecraft Education’s free option
Minecraft Education can be useful for students, teachers, and organizations, but it should not be presented as a free consumer copy of Minecraft.

An eligible school or organization account—such as a qualifying Microsoft 365 Education or Entra ID account—may receive a Minecraft Education trial. Demo lessons may be available without an account, but those lessons are limited snapshots of classroom gameplay. Saving worlds and multiplayer are disabled in the demo experience.
Minecraft Education has educational tools and licensing rules that differ from Java and Bedrock. Check the official IT-admin guide for account eligibility and the Minecraft Education overview for its features and supported platforms.

The launcher only shows “Buy Now”
Work through these checks:
- Confirm that you are signed in with the Microsoft account that claimed the trial, made the purchase, or owns Game Pass.
- Check that the Game Pass subscription has not expired and that the current plan includes Minecraft on the intended device.
- Close and reopen the launcher, Xbox app, and Microsoft Store.
- Install available launcher and game updates.
- On Windows, repair or reset the launcher through the installed-app settings if it is not refreshing the entitlement.
- Sign out and back in only after confirming which account owns the access.
Mojang’s Bedrock trial troubleshooting article specifically recommends checking the purchase account, Game Pass status, and repairing the Windows launcher when Bedrock remains in demo mode.
The PS5 trial is missing
Free trials can vary by region, platform, and account. Open the current official PlayStation Minecraft page and check both the PS5 Standard Edition listing and any separate PS4 demo listing. An old search result may point to a different console generation or an offer that has ended.
The trial will not let you use commands or Creative mode
That is expected. The official trials are restricted versions: Bedrock is single-player Survival with commands disabled, while the Java demo also disables commands and online servers. Buying the game or using qualifying subscription access is required for the full feature set.
You cannot play online with a friend
Check the following in order:
- Are all players signed in to the required accounts?
- Is the game updated on every device?
- Are all players using the same edition—Java or Bedrock?
- Are multiplayer permissions enabled, especially for a child account?
- Is the required console subscription active?
- Is the host online and actually sharing the world?
- Are platform services and the Minecraft service operating normally?

You bought Minecraft on another platform
A PC purchase does not generally unlock console ownership. The PC bundle provides Java Edition and Bedrock Edition for PC; it does not provide a PlayStation or Xbox copy. Console purchases are tied to their respective storefront ecosystems. A Microsoft account can connect friends, purchases, and cross-platform features, but it does not turn one platform purchase into a license for every other platform.
You started a subscription promotion and forgot to cancel
Game Pass subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled. PlayStation Plus promotional trials can also convert to paid recurring subscriptions under their terms. Check the renewal date immediately after starting a promotion and cancel before the promotional period ends if you only wanted temporary access. Canceling a subscription normally affects future billing; access timing depends on the specific offer and platform terms.
What about a free Minecraft Realms trial?
A Realms trial, when offered, is a trial of the hosting subscription, not a free copy of Minecraft. Players still need a compatible version of the game and the relevant account or platform access. Details and availability are described on Mojang’s Realms purchase page.
Is buying Minecraft better than using a subscription?
Buying is usually the better choice if you expect to play regularly for a long time and want access without a monthly renewal. Game Pass is attractive if you already subscribe, qualify for a short promotion, or want to try many games—not if you want permanent ownership of Minecraft.
