NYT Pips is a domino-based logic puzzle: place every tile so it covers the board exactly once, then make the values in each marked region satisfy its rule. You do not need physical dominoes—the digital game provides the tiles and puzzle.

What is NYT Pips?

Pips is a logic game from The New York Times Games, announced on August 18, 2025. It uses dominoes as the pieces in a placement puzzle rather than asking players to solve a word challenge. The NYT version uses tile values from zero through six.

In the launch announcement, NYT Games head Jonathan Knight said, “Dominoes evoke nostalgia for many people, and we leaned into that comfort while adding our signature NYT Games human-crafted twist.”

How do you play Pips?

  1. Inspect the board. The board is divided into marked regions, each showing a condition its covered squares must satisfy.
  2. Place the dominoes. Each tile covers two adjacent squares. Use every available tile once, and cover every square exactly once.
  3. Check the regions. The values of the squares in each region must meet that region’s displayed rule. A placement can fit the empty spaces but still fail if it breaks a condition.
  4. Complete the puzzle. The board is solved when all squares are covered and every region’s condition is met.

What do the region symbols mean?

The conditions govern the values in a region, not the orientation of a tile. The symbols and number specify which relationship or total the region requires.

  • =: the values in the region must all be equal.
  • ≠: the values must all be distinct.
  • A target number: the values must add up to that exact total.
  • > or < with a target: the region’s sum must be greater than or less than the target, respectively.

How do Easy, Medium and Hard differ?

A current gameplay guide describes three difficulty levels. Higher levels use larger boards and more complicated puzzles; all three still require full board coverage and compliance with the marked constraints.

Difficulty What to expect What remains the same
Easy Smaller, less complicated board, according to Tom’s Guide’s October 6, 2026 guide. Use every tile once, cover every square, and satisfy each region’s rule.
Medium More board size or constraint complexity than Easy; a specific size is not stated in the guide. Use every tile once, cover every square, and satisfy each region’s rule.
Hard Larger and more complicated than the lower levels; a specific size is not stated in the guide. Use every tile once, cover every square, and satisfy each region’s rule.

Some puzzles may have more than one valid solution, according to the same guide. The aim is to find a placement that satisfies all the puzzle’s conditions, not necessarily to reproduce a single hidden arrangement.

Do you need a physical domino set?

No. The digital game supplies its tiles and board. A double-six set may be a fun optional companion because its values correspond to the NYT game’s zero-to-six range, but it does not give you the digital puzzle or its region rules.

When did Pips launch?

The New York Times Company announced Pips on August 18, 2025. Spectrum News NY1 reported on August 29, 2025, that the Times had introduced the domino-based daily logic puzzle that month and covered puzzle editor Ian Livengood discussing the game in an interview.
