You can stream some Steam games to a screen while using Xbox Series X hardware, but there is no documented standard way to install the Steam client or its games directly on the console. The clearest cloud option is GeForce NOW for titles it supports; Steam Link is an alternative if you have a PC running Steam to host the game.
Can you install Steam on Xbox Series X?
Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud Gaming page describes playing supported Xbox games through its cloud service; it does not provide a Steam client or a way to install games from a Steam library on Xbox Series X. So treat this as streaming access, not native Steam installation.
Stream supported Steam games with GeForce NOW
NVIDIA documents connecting a store library and launching supported games you own through GeForce NOW. Steamworks also identifies GeForce NOW as a cloud service connected to Steam Cloud Play for participating games. A Steam purchase alone does not guarantee that a game is available through the service: check the current GeForce NOW catalog for the specific title.
- Check game support. Search GeForce NOW’s current catalog for the Steam game you want to play.
- Set up GeForce NOW. Create an account or sign in, then choose a membership available in your region.
- Connect Steam. Link your Steam account when prompted so the service can find eligible games in your library.
- Open the service and launch the game. Use an environment that GeForce NOW supports. Trying it through Microsoft Edge on Xbox Series X may be possible, but NVIDIA’s cited documentation does not certify Xbox Series X|S browser support; check current compatibility before relying on this setup.
- Connect a controller. NVIDIA lists Microsoft Xbox One and Xbox Series controllers among supported gamepads. Whether a controller is recognized in a particular Xbox browser session can depend on that setup.
This method runs the game through GeForce NOW rather than installing its files on the Xbox. Availability, supported games and membership options can change by region and over time; confirm them with NVIDIA before signing up.

Use Steam Link if you have a PC running Steam
Steam Support explains that “The Steam Link allows you to stream games from the Steam Library on your PC to any TV in your home.” The key requirement is a computer running Steam: that PC runs the game and streams it to a separate screen. Steam Link is not a Steam client for Xbox, and the TV endpoint does not have to be the Xbox console.
This route can make sense if you already have a gaming PC and want to play its Steam games on a TV. It does not provide cloud hardware, so the computer must be on and capable of running the game. See Steam Link Hardware support for Steam’s requirements.

Improve streaming reliability
Streaming quality depends on your network: congestion, Wi-Fi signal and latency can affect responsiveness and image quality. Xbox recommends 20 Mbps for consoles for best Xbox Cloud Gaming performance and prefers wired Ethernet where possible. That figure is Xbox guidance for its cloud gaming service, not a guarantee of GeForce NOW or Steam Link performance.

- Use wired Ethernet for the Xbox or streaming endpoint when practical. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is an optional way to make a wired connection; it does not enable Steam installation.
- If you use Wi-Fi, keep the device near the router and reduce competing network traffic during play.
- Test the exact combination of game, service, browser and controller before planning a long session. Browser and device support can differ from general service availability.
