Tanks is a game in GamePigeon, a third-party iMessage extension—not a standalone game built into iPhone. To play, open a blue-bubble conversation in Messages, tap +, open or install GamePigeon, choose Tanks, and send the invitation. Your opponent needs compatible iMessage access to play.
What you need before starting
- An iPhone with Messages and iMessage available. These steps use the iOS 26 Messages interface.
- iMessage enabled and an internet or cellular data connection for Messages.
- A one-to-one conversation with someone who can use iMessage apps. A blue bubble is a useful sign that the conversation is using iMessage.
- GamePigeon installed and accessible from Messages. Its U.S. App Store listing identifies it as an iMessage-only app and includes Tanks in its game collection: GamePigeon on the App Store.
GamePigeon is an iOS-exclusive iMessage extension, not an Apple-developed game. Its official press kit describes the extension. The U.S. App Store listed it as free with in-app purchases when checked for this guide; price and availability can vary by country and change, so check the listing shown to you.
Install GamePigeon in Messages
- Open Messages and enter the conversation where you want to play, or start a conversation with the other iMessage user.
- Tap the + button beside the text field.
- Tap Store to open the iMessage App Store. Apple documents this route in its iOS 26 guide to using iMessage apps.
- Search for GamePigeon, tap Get, and authenticate with your Apple Account if prompted.
- Return to the conversation. GamePigeon is used from the Messages app drawer rather than as a conventional Home Screen game.
Start a Tanks match
- Open the blue-bubble conversation with your opponent.
- Tap + beside the message field. Find and open GamePigeon; depending on the app drawer arrangement, it may be under More.
- Select Tanks from GamePigeon’s game list.
- Choose any options the game screen offers, then tap the send control to place the invitation in the conversation.
- Ask your opponent to tap the game invitation to open and take their turn. Continue from the game card in the message thread.
The exact app drawer arrangement can differ with installed iMessage apps. Apple documents the iOS 26 + → Store route; GamePigeon-specific selection steps are also described in this Tanks walkthrough.

For the most reliable setup, use a one-to-one iMessage thread. Do not assume a group chat supports a particular number of players or turn order; check what the current game screen offers.

How Tanks works
Tanks is a casual, turn-based artillery-style game, not a full tank simulator. The standard objective is to hit and destroy the opposing tank or tanks. The precise controls and options can vary, so follow the labels shown in your current game rather than relying on a fixed control description.
- Position your tank: If movement or positioning controls are available, use them to account for the battlefield and the opponent’s location.
- Set up a shot: Adjust the turret angle and firing power using the on-screen controls. The projectile’s path is affected by the terrain and obstacles.
- Fire: Send the shot and note where it lands. Use the result to make a measured adjustment on your next turn.
- Use power-ups when useful: If the match offers power-ups, consider whether an offensive or defensive effect will meaningfully help before spending it.
- Wait for the opponent: Turns alternate through the game invitation in Messages. Keep playing until the game ends.
GamePigeon’s listing confirms Tanks is included, but Apple’s iMessage documentation does not specify its individual controls. For a visual example of the game loop, see this Tanks gameplay video; treat exact control labels as version-dependent.

Simple tactics for better shots
- Prioritize a dependable hit over maximum power on every shot.
- Watch where the opponent’s last shot landed, then adjust your angle or power in small increments.
- Use terrain and obstacles as cover when positioning is available, and avoid unnecessary exposure.
- Save a power-up for a turn when its effect could change the exchange rather than using it automatically.
- Learn how aiming behaves in a casual match before relying on a particular angle, weapon, or tactic; no one setting is established as optimal for every battlefield.
Fix Tanks when it does not appear or open

If the app drawer itself is blank or unresponsive after reopening Messages, restart the iPhone. If GamePigeon remains unavailable on an older iOS version, check for an iOS update; the available App Store listing does not establish a minimum iOS version for every device.

GamePigeon Tanks suits quick, casual, turn-based play inside Messages. If you want richer graphics, real-time multiplayer, progression, matchmaking, or play with an Android user, look for a standalone game that explicitly supports the platforms and features you need. Those games leave Messages; they are not iMessage replacements.
