For a first playthrough, follow the six main games in release order: Splinter Cell, Pandora Tomorrow, Chaos Theory, Double Agent, Conviction, then Blacklist. You can skip the PSP game Splinter Cell: Essentials without losing the core story. If you want the smoothest path from Double Agent into Conviction, check which platform version of Double Agent you are buying.
Splinter Cell games in recommended order
- Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell — Start with Sam Fisher’s first main adventure. Ubisoft’s anniversary article says the original launched on November 17, 2002; its PC listing gives a February 18, 2003 date, reflecting different release dates by platform or edition. Ubisoft’s anniversary article and Ubisoft’s game page provide those dates.
- Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow — Play it second, after the original.
- Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory — The third game in the core sequence, completing the original trilogy.
- Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Double Agent — Play it fourth, then continue to Conviction. Its platform versions differ; see the version note below.
- Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction — Fifth in the recommended sequence.
- Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist — Sixth and the latest mainline game in this sequence. Ubisoft lists its release date as August 20, 2013. Ubisoft’s Blacklist page lists PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U versions.
This main-game order follows the release sequence and the story progression recommended by the Splinter Cell chronology guide. It is the clearest route for newcomers: play each entry once, in sequence, without treating every platform edition or spin-off as another required chapter.
Is Splinter Cell release order different from story order?
For the six main games listed above, there is no need to choose between two substantially different play orders: the chronology guide recommends the same broad progression. Its story-oriented sequence also includes Essentials, but that game is optional, and the guide says the core plot remains followable without it. Its specific in-universe dates and canon judgments are the guide’s interpretation, not an official Ubisoft ruling.
Where the optional PSP game fits
Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Essentials is a PSP game built around flashback missions. The chronology guide places it between Chaos Theory and Double Agent. Play it there if you want the extra material and have access to a PSP copy; skip it if you only want the main-series story.

Which Double Agent version should you play?
Double Agent has different versions for different platforms. Ubisoft’s current product page covers the PC and Xbox 360 version, while the chronology guide distinguishes that branch from versions released on older consoles. The guide recommends the PC/Xbox 360 branch for the continuous story path it describes into Conviction. That is the guide’s recommendation, not an official Ubisoft declaration that one version is canon.
Before buying, confirm the platform and edition on the store or listing. A title that simply says Double Agent may not identify the version you intend to play. Ubisoft’s product page lists PC and Xbox 360; the chronology guide explains its version distinction.

Availability, platforms, and online modes
Ubisoft’s product pages list selected platforms, not a guarantee that each edition is currently sold or will run on your hardware. Check the store listing for your country and device before purchasing. The pages list PC for the original, PC and Xbox 360 for Double Agent, and PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U for Blacklist. Ubisoft’s US store catalog is another place to check listings, but it is not a compatibility guide.
Do not count on playing Blacklist multiplayer or co-op: Ubisoft says those online features are no longer supported and the modes are no longer functional. The listed single-player sequence remains the practical route through the games.

It is not part of the six released games in the order above. Read Ubisoft’s remake announcement for the details it provided at the time.
