You can’t join the Xbox FINAL FANTASY XIV open beta now: it began on February 21, 2024, and ended when the full Xbox version launched on March 21, 2024. The beta’s original sign-up and download steps are below for context; if you want to start playing on Xbox today, use the current Free Trial or full-version requirements instead.
How the Xbox FFXIV open beta worked
Square Enix opened the beta to new FINAL FANTASY XIV players on Xbox Series X|S. It was not an early-access route for existing players: anyone whose Square Enix account already had an FFXIV license or a Free Trial registered on another platform was excluded. Existing players were told to wait for the full Xbox release to use their existing account and characters. Square Enix’s beta announcement contains the original eligibility details.
Original download steps
- On an Xbox Series X|S, open Microsoft Store and search for FINAL FANTASY XIV.
- Open the game’s product page, select the “…” menu, and choose the FINAL FANTASY XIV Free Trial for Xbox Series X|S.
- Download and install it, then launch the game and follow the on-screen instructions.
The beta included the Free Trial’s content, features, and limitations. Optional Online Store purchases were not available during the beta.
Xbox privacy settings named in the 2024 instructions
Square Enix’s beta instructions asked players to allow multiplayer and cross-network play, set voice, text, or invitation communication to Everybody, allow voice and text communication outside Xbox, and permit viewing and uploading community creations under Game content. Xbox menu labels may have changed since those instructions were published.

What you need to play FFXIV on Xbox now
The beta has ended, but Xbox players can use the Free Trial or the full game. Their Game Pass requirements differ: Square Enix said the Free Trial did not require Game Pass, while the full version requires an eligible Game Pass plan. Plan names have varied between official notices, so consult the current Xbox system requirements before buying or subscribing.

The Xbox version requires an Xbox wireless controller, according to the system requirements. This is a hardware requirement for Xbox play, not a way to access the closed beta.

Link your Xbox and Square Enix accounts carefully
Playing the Xbox version requires linking an Xbox account with a Square Enix account. Square Enix warns that the link cannot be undone. If you already play FFXIV elsewhere, make sure you sign in with the Square Enix account associated with your characters before linking, and confirm that you are using the intended Xbox account.
When the full Xbox version launched, beta participants could continue with their beta data through the same Xbox account. Square Enix said they did not need to download the application again. That transition applied to beta participants at launch; the open beta itself is no longer available.
