Yes—you can play some Xbox Cloud Gaming titles without a controller, but not the whole catalog. Use on-screen touch controls for games that support them, or a keyboard and mouse for select games on supported Windows browsers or the Xbox app. If a game offers neither option, you will need a compatible controller for that title.
Choose the input the game supports
Controller-free play depends on both the game and the device or app you use to stream it. A touchscreen does not make every game touch-compatible, and a game’s PC version supporting keyboard and mouse does not prove that its cloud-streamed Xbox version does too.

Check the current Xbox Cloud Gaming listing for the specific game’s touch or keyboard-and-mouse support. Catalog availability and features can change by title, region, plan, platform, and game update. Xbox describes touch controls as available for selected games on its Xbox mobile gaming page and cloud gaming page.
Play with touch controls on a phone or tablet
- On a compatible touchscreen phone or tablet, go to xbox.com/play or use an Xbox mobile route supported in your region.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that has the required cloud-game access.
- Choose a game marked for touch controls, then launch it.
- Use the on-screen buttons, sticks, triggers, or game-specific overlay.
There is no single touch layout for every game. Developers can customize overlays, so controls may look and behave differently from title to title; Microsoft’s touch-layout guide describes that flexibility.

If no controls appear, the game probably does not support touch through that session. A touchscreen laptop is not a guarantee: touch support is primarily intended for supported mobile play and may not be exposed on every touchscreen device. Even when available, virtual sticks and small on-screen buttons can be uncomfortable or imprecise, especially for fast or complicated games.
Play with a keyboard and mouse on Windows
Xbox supports keyboard-and-mouse input for select cloud games through supported browsers such as Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome, and through the Xbox app on Windows. Microsoft first documented the cloud feature in its March 2024 Xbox Insider notes; Xbox later described support for select games and apps in its August 2025 update.
- Connect your keyboard and mouse to the Windows PC before starting the stream.
- Open xbox.com/play in a supported browser, or launch the Xbox app on Windows, and sign in.
- Select a title that specifically supports keyboard and mouse for cloud play and launch it.
- If the game does not respond, click inside the stream to give it focus.
- Use the game’s own settings to remap keys or adjust mouse sensitivity if those options are available.
Support is specific to the streamed game and access method. Xbox Cloud Gaming streams a console version; a separate PC version’s keyboard-and-mouse controls do not automatically carry over. If you are choosing a game or subscription specifically for this setup, confirm support in the current Xbox listing or interface first. Microsoft’s Xbox Store keyboard-and-mouse category can help identify console-capable titles, but a category listing alone does not confirm that a game is currently cloud-streamable or works on every device.

Older preview instructions mentioned enabling “Preview features” in the browser’s profile and settings menus. Those were instructions for the preview period, not a reliable current setup requirement; do not assume the same menu is still present.
What if the game asks for a controller?
First check that the current game listing identifies touch or keyboard-and-mouse support. If it does, try this short recovery sequence:
- Close the cloud session and relaunch the game.
- Connect the keyboard and mouse before launching.
- Click in the game stream to capture input.
- If you are using a browser on Windows, try Edge or Chrome; if browser input still fails, try the Xbox app on Windows.
- Check the game’s control settings for an input selection or remapping option.
If the game still demands a controller, treat that as an input-compatibility limitation. Repeatedly changing browser settings will not add native support to a game that does not have it. A keyboard that works in menus but not during gameplay may indicate that the title supports navigation but not keyboard input for actual play.

Other devices and workarounds
Laptop trackpad
A trackpad may work as a mouse-like pointing device when the game accepts native keyboard-and-mouse input. It is not a full gamepad replacement: games built around two analog sticks, triggers, or simultaneous camera and movement controls may be uncomfortable or impractical.

You may be able to stream Xbox Cloud Gaming on a supported TV, but controller-free input is less predictable there. A TV remote is not a general substitute for a game controller; touch controls generally require a touchscreen device, and a TV app does not guarantee keyboard-and-mouse support. Xbox’s device listings do not establish compatibility for every TV model, remote, or game.
Mac, Chromebook, or other device
Cloud access depends on the supported device and access method, while keyboard-and-mouse cloud support is documented for select games through supported browsers and the Windows Xbox app. Do not assume that a browser on another operating system, a TV app, or a handheld exposes the same inputs. Check the game and device route you plan to use.

Unofficial key-mapping tools
Third-party remappers may translate keyboard or mouse actions into virtual gamepad signals, but that is not Xbox-native keyboard-and-mouse support. They can add latency, create poor camera control or incorrect mappings, lose focus, and raise security, privacy, account, or terms-of-service concerns. They are not the reliable first choice, particularly for competitive games.
Do you need an Xbox console or Game Pass?
You do not need to own an Xbox console to use Cloud Gaming on a supported device. You do need a Microsoft account, a supported device and region, a suitable internet connection, and access to the game through an eligible plan or supported free-to-play offer. Cloud access and game availability depend on market and plan.
