To shut down a PS5 completely, press the controller’s PS button, select Power, then Turn Off PS5. Choose Restart PS5 to shut down and start again, or Enter Rest Mode to leave the console in low-power standby. Wait for the power indicator to turn off before disconnecting the console.
Turn off your PS5 with the controller
- Press the PS button to open the Control Center.
- Select Power.
- Select Turn Off PS5.
- Wait until the screen goes blank and the console’s power indicator is off before disconnecting cables.
Sony’s U.S. English support page gives this path; button and menu labels may differ slightly with system software version or language. The controller also turns off when the console is turned off or put into Rest Mode. Sony’s PS5 power options
Restart your PS5
- Press the PS button.
- Select Power.
- Select Restart PS5.
The console shuts down fully and then starts again automatically. A restart is a sensible first step for temporary glitches, sluggishness, or unusual display or audio behavior, but it is not a guaranteed fix. Save your game or close it if possible before restarting.

Turn off the console with its power button
If the controller is disconnected, out of battery, or unable to open the Control Center, use the physical power button on the PS5:

- Wait for the display to go blank and the indicator to flash white and then turn off.
When the console responds normally, the Control Center is the clearer way to select a shutdown. A single press of the console’s power button enters Rest Mode rather than turning the PS5 off completely. Sony’s power-button guidance
Turn Off PS5, Restart PS5, or Rest Mode?

The indicator helps identify the state: white means the console is on, orange means Rest Mode, and off means the console is turned off. These indicator meanings are listed in Sony’s PS5 support guide.

Enter Rest Mode and wake the console
To enter Rest Mode, press the PS button, select Power, then Enter Rest Mode. You can also press the physical power button once. Wake the console by pressing the PS button on a paired controller or pressing the console’s power button.
Rest Mode uses some power. Whether USB charging, internet connection, automatic downloads, and updates remain available depends on the settings you enable. Find them at Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Sony documents USB power choices including Always and 3 Hours; Adaptive charging is documented for CFI-2000 model-group consoles, so not every PS5 has the same charging options. If your PS5 is frozen or the controller will not work
- If the Control Center still responds, select Power > Restart PS5.
- If you cannot use the interface, press and hold the console’s power button until it beeps.
- Wait for the power indicator to turn off completely before starting the console again.
- If the problem continues or the console will not start correctly, consider Safe Mode rather than repeatedly cutting power.
Do not unplug the AC cord while the indicator is lit or blinking. Sony warns that interrupting power then can cause data loss, corruption, or damage. A normal restart or the physical-button shutdown is not the same as pulling the plug. Sony’s power safety warning
Start PS5 Safe Mode for persistent problems
Safe Mode is for troubleshooting when an ordinary restart is not enough; it is not a routine way to turn off the console.

- Turn the PS5 off by holding its power button for about three seconds. Wait for the indicator to blink and then go out.
- With the console off, press and hold the power button again. Release it after the second beep, which Sony says comes about seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the controller directly to the console with a USB cable, then press the controller’s PS button.
Start with troubleshooting options that are appropriate to the symptom. Repair Console Storage does not erase data; Change Video Output may help with certain blank-screen issues; and Update System Software can be used for update trouble. Restore Default Settings resets settings but does not delete games, apps, captures, or saved data stored on the console. Clear Cache and Rebuild Database are available for certain system-feature or performance issues. Option names and availability are described in Sony’s Safe Mode guide.
Treat Reset PS5 and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) as last resorts: both delete user data. Sony’s Safe Mode update instructions cover update recovery, while its system software guidance covers manual updating and reinstallation.

If the controller will not connect in Safe Mode
Check that the console is fully off before repeating the second-beep procedure. Connect the controller directly to the PS5 with a USB cable that supports data communication; a charge-only cable may not work. If Safe Mode still will not open or the console remains unusable, use PlayStation support for repair and diagnostic options.

Only after the console is fully off and its power indicator is no longer lit. Do not use unplugging as a normal shutdown method, and never disconnect the AC cord while the indicator is lit or blinking. If the screen has gone black but the indicator has not turned off, wait.
