Choose manual controls or simplified flight
Manual flight gives you direct control of throttle, pitch, yaw, and roll. Simplified controls automate pitch, yaw, and roll so the aircraft steers toward the direction you point the camera. EA treats airplane and helicopter assistance as separate settings, so you can configure them independently.

To change assistance, open Settings > Gameplay > Vehicles, then check Airplane Control Assists for jets or Helicopter Control Assist for helicopters. EA’s support page lists arrow keys and mouse movement for simplified direction on PC, and right-stick up/down and left-stick up/down on controller. Because mappings can differ by mode and platform, use the in-game mapping screen to verify the controls you see.
Check your controls before takeoff
EA’s detailed jet guide, dated August 18, 2026, lists these default bindings. They can be remapped, and sensitivity can be adjusted; check Settings before flying. The live-service guide may change as the game evolves.

EA’s table says pitching up raises the nose and gains altitude while reducing speed. Treat that as a reminder to make small corrections rather than holding an input longer than needed.
Build skill in a useful order
This progression applies EA’s documented flying and survival priorities as practice steps; it is not a tested or guaranteed in-game course.

- Verify inputs. In a practice experience, identify throttle, pitch, yaw, roll, afterburner, camera, freelook, weapons, and countermeasures. If manual coordination is making basic flight difficult, try the relevant simplified-control setting.
- Stay airborne. Concentrate on takeoff and steady flight before attempting combat. EA advises subtle inputs, avoiding overcontrol, and staying a couple hundred meters above ground and away from hard surfaces as a general safety rule.
- Practice orientation and scanning. Cruise in third person and look for threats, map edges, and your position relative to the ground. Switch to first person or zoom when lining up a weapon.
- Make a controlled attack pass. Once flight is stable, try one pass at a ground target, then reorient before another. EA describes strafing as a high-speed, low pass, but warns pilots to maximize firing time without risking the aircraft. Beginners should prioritize safe clearance over low-altitude strafing.
- Add defense practice. Notice “Locking,” “Locked,” and “Incoming” warnings. Practice leaving a predictable straight line, using terrain as cover, and saving flares for an incoming projectile.
- Look for a suitable Portal experience. EA recommends jet-only Portal experiences. IGN’s October 21, 2025 video description names “Free Flying,” “Ace Pursuit,” and “Jet and Helicopter Training,” but its metadata does not establish whether those experiences are currently available, functional, or configured for practice. Treat the names as search terms, not guarantees.
Use camera views for different jobs
Third-person chase view helps with threat spotting and seeing the aircraft’s position in the environment. First-person cockpit view or zoom is more useful when aligning a weapon. Switch based on the task rather than treating one view as best for every moment.
Survive threats without trading one danger for another
- Keep clearance. EA recommends staying a couple hundred meters above ground as a general safety rule and avoiding hard surfaces.
- Use low flight selectively. EA says flying below 30 meters can make enemy lock-ons harder, but presents it as a situational tactic. Low altitude raises collision risk and can leave you exposed to other attacks; it is not a beginner default.
- Time flares. Flares are limited. Wait for an incoming projectile rather than using them as soon as a lock warning appears.
- Break predictability. When threatened, move off a straight line and use terrain or buildings as potential missile-interception cover.
- Repair after damage. EA advises repairing the aircraft after it takes damage.
- Coordinate in two-seat aircraft. In the F-74A Seacat and F/A-81F Super Spectre, pilots should communicate evasive maneuvers because sharp turns can disrupt the weapons systems officer’s targeting.
What to expect as you practice
There is no source-backed time-to-proficiency benchmark. EA’s guidance emphasizes patience and practice, including jet-only Portal experiences. The useful progression is to build stable flight first, then awareness, controlled attacks, and finally defense under pressure.
