Make sure the expansion is available on your account, choose the campaign difficulty that suits your experience, and use the campaign to move into the Pale Heart and its follow-up activities.
Decide whether you want the story context first
Bungie recommends playing expansions mostly in chronological order to follow character development, but says you can begin with the newest expansion and return to earlier content later. Its current suggested route runs through Lightfall, The Final Shape, The Edge of Fate, and Renegades. See Bungie Help’s new-player path for the current sequence.
If you want the lead-in to The Final Shape, play the earlier expansion campaigns in order; if you mainly want to reach this campaign, start it directly. Bungie says, “the game won’t block your progression if you start with the most recent expansion and then go back to others.”
Confirm campaign access
Check that The Final Shape expansion is available on your account, then look for its campaign in the Director’s World tab. Bungie lists the campaign and Pale Heart as content in the Standard Edition. Edition availability and pricing can vary by platform and region, so verify the listing for your platform. Bungie’s pre-order bonuses were for orders placed before June 4, 2024; do not count on those bonuses being available now.

Choose a campaign difficulty
The campaign offers two difficulty choices. The more demanding option is not a prerequisite for starting the story.

| Be Brave | Players who want the classic campaign experience, including newer or returning players relearning combat. | Can be played solo or with a fireteam. |
| Become Legend | Experienced players comfortable with harder missions and a broad arsenal. | Enemies and missions are more challenging. Completing every Legendary mission grants additional rewards per class. |
Bungie’s official campaign guide describes the difficulty options. Choose based on your familiarity with Destiny 2 combat and whether you want the extra challenge and per-class rewards, rather than treating the harder setting as a required preparation step.

Do not grind for old launch Power targets
Bungie said the campaigns were Power Disabled at The Final Shape’s June 2024 launch, so campaign difficulty did not scale with a player’s Power. Its April 2024 announcement listed a 1900 Power Floor, 1940 Soft Cap, 1990 Powerful Cap, and 2000 Hard/Pinnacle Cap for that launch. Those are historical 2024 figures, not current 2026 targets or requirements for beginning the campaign. Check the activity details in-game for current Power expectations.
For context, Bungie’s 2024 announcement said a full Legendary campaign completion would award a 1960 Power gear set and described 1965 as the target for being at the cap through Salvation’s Edge Contest encounters. Those figures were tied to the planned 2024 launch and should not be used as present-day raid-entry guidance. The same announcement described Fireteam Power and said, “Destiny 2 is a game you can always play with your friends, regardless of your Power level.”

Use the campaign as your starting point for Pale Heart progression
After the campaign, follow the activities and unlocks that open up in the Pale Heart rather than assuming all preparation must happen beforehand. Bungie identifies these follow-up pursuits:
- Pale Heart Ranks: Campaign completion unlocks this progression.
- Prismatic: Continue its unlocks and progression after the story.
- Ghost reputation: Build reputation through Pale Heart activities.
- Cysts: Explore these activities as they become available.
- Exotic quests: Follow the listed quests available after the campaign.

Salvation’s Edge context is optional preparation
Before Salvation’s Edge launched in 2024, Bungie encouraged players to complete the campaign and the Wild Card mission for the best story experience. That was a narrative recommendation for the raid’s launch period, not evidence of a current raid-access rule. Check the raid’s current in-game requirements and activity details if you plan to enter it.
