For a 24/7 YouTube stream over 4G in India, prepare a constant-frame-rate 360p or 480p video at 30 fps, encode it as H.264 with AAC audio, and set the stream bitrate below what your connection can reliably upload. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom; a speed test at one moment is not proof that a mobile connection will hold all day. Test the finished program on the actual SIM and setup before relying on it.
Choose resolution and bitrate for your content and connection
Resolution and bitrate are separate settings: resolution determines the frame dimensions, while bitrate determines how much data the encoder sends each second. A lower resolution can reduce the required upload capacity, but a busy or detailed picture may need more bitrate to look acceptable than a mostly static scene.

These are YouTube Help’s H.264 recommendation ranges, accessed in 2026—not a guarantee that every bitrate will work on your network. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Start conservatively, then judge the picture and connection together rather than selecting a rate solely by resolution.
Calculate the upload capacity and data allowance you need
YouTube says the total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. That means a 1 Mbps total stream target calls for at least 1.25 Mbps of stable upload capacity (1 ÷ 0.8); a 2 Mbps target calls for at least 2.5 Mbps. These are arithmetic examples, not speed-test results. Count audio and any other traffic using the connection in the total.

For a 24/7 stream, data use adds up quickly. At a sustained bitrate, the approximate payload is bitrate × time, before protocol overhead:

These are calculations from the stated bitrates, not carrier-measured consumption. Actual usage can be higher because of protocol overhead, reconnects, bitrate variation, and other device traffic. Check your provider’s current data allowance, fair-use terms, and possible throttling conditions; those vary by plan and location in India.

Prepare the video file
- Choose the output size and frame rate. Use progressive video at 30 fps. Common 16:9 examples are 640×360 for 360p and 854×480 for 480p; these are practical examples, not dimensions mandated by YouTube.
- Encode for compatibility. Use H.264 video and stereo AAC audio. YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1 video and MP3 audio as supported options, but H.264/AAC is a straightforward starting point for broad encoder compatibility.
- Set a constant bitrate. YouTube lists CBR as its encoder setting. Choose a video bitrate within its recommendation range for the selected resolution and leave network headroom for the total stream.
- Set keyframes and audio. YouTube recommends a keyframe every 2 seconds and says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds. Its recommended stereo audio bitrate is 128 Kbps.
- Check the finished file. Play it from beginning to end in the encoder or player you plan to use. Confirm the dimensions, frame rate, audio, and loop point are as intended before building the live stream around it.
YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS ingestion. Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it and the stream’s selected settings allow it. The encoder values above are from YouTube Help; check the settings shown for your particular encoder and stream.
Set up YouTube Live and test the real 4G connection
- Check channel eligibility early. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days. First-time live activation takes at least 24 hours after you request it, so do not leave activation until the day you plan to start. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- Prepare the event and stream key. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live, set up the stream, and use the stream key and ingestion settings provided for that event in your encoder. Keep the key private: anyone with access may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Test from the installation site. Use the same SIM, router or phone, antenna placement, encoder, and power arrangement you intend to use. Run repeated upload tests at different times, then send an unlisted test stream long enough to observe how the link behaves. A speed test measures a moment; it does not establish that 4G will remain stable for a full day.
- Make the preflight representative. YouTube advises testing before going live. Include audio and movement similar to the real program, check the Live Control Room preview, and watch the stream health indicator for warnings, dropped frames, or reconnects. - Plan what happens when the link fails. A single 4G connection is a single point of failure. YouTube’s guidance recommends testing encoder failover when a production uses it, but the cited documentation does not promise mobile-carrier failover. If uninterrupted coverage matters, consider a separately tested backup connection or encoder and test the switch in advance.
At the installation point, compare actual signal and upload stability, not a carrier’s advertised peak download rate. If considering a 4G router, check that its bands and connectivity suit your carrier and setup; no particular provider, plan, or router can be recommended without local compatibility and plan checks.

Monitor the stream and make an archive plan
While the event is running, monitor YouTube’s stream health and check for dropped frames or reconnects. If you are recording an archive file locally, YouTube’s tips say to confirm that the file size is growing. Keep local recording storage and power in mind if you need a copy of the program.
YouTube’s guidance about the number of live streams a channel may create in 24 hours is not a statement of how long one event can run. The cited sources do not establish archive retention for a single continuous 24/7 stream, so do not assume YouTube will retain the full event. Check the behavior in your account and keep a local recording if the archive matters.

Keep the stream rights-safe
Before scheduling a continuous stream, make sure you have the rights needed to broadcast every video and audio track. A video being prerecorded, low-resolution, or already online does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. Use material you own or are licensed to stream, and check the relevant YouTube policies and any licence terms for continuous or live use. Do not assume a stream is safe simply because it has no immediate interruption.
