For the opened YouTube encoder table, start at 4 Mbps for 480p30 H.264 or 8 Mbps for 720p30 H.264; these are recommendations, not guarantees. Disk space, encoder performance, and internet upload capacity are separate constraints—solving one does not solve the others.
Separate the three constraints first
- Storage: how much space the prerecorded source files occupy. Removing unneeded local copies or storing files on an attached drive can free internal space.
- PC and power: the computer and encoder must remain available for local playout. A drive with more capacity does not reduce processing demand or protect against a power interruption.
- Upload connection: the PC must continuously send the encoded stream to YouTube. Lowering the outgoing bitrate can reduce upload demand, but moving source files to an external drive does not change the stream bitrate or internet use.
Decide which constraint is actually stopping the stream before changing settings or buying storage.
Choose a modest YouTube ingest setting
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS ingestion and recommends RTMPS. It supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval recommendation that should not exceed four seconds. For a low-resolution H.264 starting point, its resolution-specific table recommends:

These figures are YouTube recommendations from the opened resolution-specific table, not minimum guarantees or India-wide internet thresholds. Choose a quality your connection can sustain reliably, and verify the current YouTube guidance when configuring an encoder: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

The encoder sends an ingest feed; YouTube transcodes that incoming live stream into multiple viewer formats. Do not assume that a low-resolution source or setting will look identical on every viewer device.
Prepare files without filling the PC
Keep the active playlist lean
Retain the files required for the stream and remove duplicate exports or unrelated recordings from the playout location. If the active source files alone exceed internal capacity, an external drive is one possible place to store them. It addresses storage only: it does not improve upload capacity, reduce encoder work, or make the PC independent of power and connectivity.

Check codec trade-offs before converting
Re-encoding files may save space, but it can take time and may reduce image or audio quality. Google’s HLS ingestion guide says HEVC generally yields 25% to 50% more data compression at the same video quality compared with H.264; that is a general comparison in the HLS context, not a promise about how much a particular file will shrink. It also does not establish a consumer-PC playlist recipe. Confirm that your chosen encoder and workflow support the codec before converting your library. The guide’s HLS protocol requirements are not instructions for looping ordinary local video files: Delivering Live YouTube Content via HLS.
Configure and test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Set up the YouTube live event. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and obtain its stream key in Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password; do not publish or share it. Enter it only in the encoder you intend to use.
- Set the encoder output. Choose a resolution and frame rate such as 480p30 or 720p30, then use the matching H.264 recommendation above as a starting point. Set CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval (never more than four seconds). Prefer RTMPS when your encoder offers it.
- Run a representative test. Test with movement and audio similar to the actual program. YouTube’s Help guidance specifically recommends testing before going live with representative sound and motion. Check that audio is present and in sync, motion is not breaking up, and the connection remains stable rather than judging from a static opening frame.
- Monitor Live Control Room. Watch stream health and any configuration or connection messages. The YouTube LiveStreams API documents health values including
good,ok,bad, andnoData, along with configuration issue diagnostics; a successful initial connection is not proof that a long stream will remain healthy. See the LiveStreams API reference.
This article does not prescribe an OBS or FFmpeg loop configuration: the cited YouTube sources cover ingest settings and protocol behavior, not a verified consumer-PC recipe for looping a prerecorded playlist continuously. Use the documentation for the encoder and playlist method you select, and test that exact setup before relying on it for 24/7 operation.

Plan for failures in a local 24/7 setup
A local setup relies on the PC, encoder, power, network, source storage, and YouTube ingest all remaining available. Decide how you will notice a dropped stream and restart or recover it; do not treat a running playlist as an automatic recovery plan. Check the live health status and messages, then investigate the component they point to. No India-wide upload-speed threshold or outage rate is established here, so test the connection at the location and time you expect to stream.

Common problems and what to check
- Stream health is bad or the picture stutters: check the encoder’s bitrate and the connection’s sustained upload performance. Try the lower-resolution recommendation, test again with representative motion, and monitor YouTube’s messages.
- YouTube reports no data: check that the encoder is still running, that it is using the intended stream key and ingest destination, and that the PC still has network access.
- The disk fills despite a low-resolution stream: the outgoing bitrate does not determine how much room your original library occupies. Remove redundant local copies or consider attached storage for the source files.
- The stream stops after a power or PC interruption: local playout depends on the computer and power being available. Restore the PC and encoder, reconnect if needed, and confirm health in Live Control Room; a storage upgrade alone will not prevent this failure.
- A codec conversion saves less space than expected: compression varies by file and settings. The HEVC comparison in Google’s HLS guide is not a guaranteed file-size reduction; compare the converted result and check compatibility before replacing originals.
Copyright and channel policy still apply
A continuous stream does not exempt prerecorded material from copyright or YouTube channel policies. Use content you own or have permission to stream, and review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization rules before building a long-running playlist. Passing an encoder test confirms technical delivery, not that the content is cleared or eligible for monetization.
