How to Prepare Portrait Videos for a 24/7 YouTube Shorts-Style Live Stream

Prepare a portrait source, configure YouTube Live’s vertical or dual-stream setup, and protect a 24/7 broadcast with testing, rights checks, and a local recording.

Prepare a 9:16 portrait video, then send it to YouTube Live through an encoder—or configure YouTube’s horizontal-and-vertical dual stream before going live. Vertical live streams can be discovered in the Shorts experience, but YouTube does not guarantee placement there. For a continuous broadcast, test the framing, sound, upload connection, and stream health, and keep a separate local recording: YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured in the archive.

What “Shorts-style live” means

YouTube’s vertical live experience uses portrait video, and viewers may discover vertical live streams while browsing Shorts. That is a discovery opportunity, not a promise that a specific broadcast will appear in the Shorts feed. YouTube also distinguishes features available in the vertical experience from those in horizontal live streams, so check the current eligibility and feature information in YouTube’s live-streaming guide before planning around a particular feature.

A looping portrait broadcast is still a YouTube live stream, not a regular uploaded Short. Preparing a vertical source and choosing YouTube’s dual-stream option are separate decisions.

Choose one portrait output or dual stream

One portrait output

Send a portrait feed from your encoder to YouTube Live. This is the straightforward choice when the program is designed for phones and you do not need a separate horizontal version. Compose and check the source in portrait; a horizontal master cropped automatically may cut off faces, captions, or other important details.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Horizontal and vertical dual stream

YouTube Live Control Room can provide horizontal and vertical outputs for different viewing experiences. You can select a layout such as center crop, fit to phone width, or stacked, then inspect the preview to see how the source is framed. For an encoder-based dual stream, configure RTMP(S), use the separate vertical stream key, and send the matching image format to each feed. You cannot add the vertical format after the stream has started. YouTube’s vertical live-stream guidance describes the current setup and layout choices.

Use dual stream when you have a reason to serve both portrait and landscape viewers and can verify both outputs before launch. A single portrait stream avoids managing two feeds, but will not provide a separate horizontal output.

Prepare the portrait video

Frame for a phone screen

  1. Start from a portrait master. A 9:16 export such as 1080 × 1920 is a practical example, not an official YouTube resolution requirement.
  2. Keep faces, text, game action, and essential graphics inside the visible vertical frame. Leave breathing room near the edges so interface overlays or reframing do not obscure key details.
  3. If you are adapting landscape footage, choose the crop deliberately. Reposition the frame for important action rather than assuming a centered crop will work. For dual stream, inspect the selected crop, fit, or stacked layout in the Control Room preview.
  4. Review the entire loop for abrupt cuts, black frames, unintended silent stretches, or mismatched audio. Make the end connect cleanly to the beginning if the program is intended to repeat.

For general aspect-ratio considerations in OBS, see its video guidance; the output still needs to be composed for your intended portrait broadcast.

Configure YouTube Live and the encoder

  1. Enable live streaming and prepare the event. Use a channel eligible for live streaming, then create or schedule the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Complete any channel verification or activation steps YouTube presents before the planned start.
  2. Choose the output route before going live. For one portrait feed, configure a portrait output. For dual stream, select the horizontal-and-vertical setup and layout in Control Room before starting.
  3. Copy the matching ingest details. Put the YouTube stream URL and stream key into the encoder. For encoder-driven dual stream, use RTMP(S), the second vertical key, and ensure each feed receives its matching image format. Treat stream keys as credentials: do not publish or share them.
  4. Set encoder parameters for your actual output. YouTube’s encoder settings and recommendations cover supported codecs, bitrate guidance, and resolutions. Use constant bitrate (CBR), set a 2-second keyframe interval, and do not exceed 4 seconds. Use AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. Choose bitrate in relation to resolution, frame rate, and the connection available; no single bitrate is right for every stream.
  5. Test before the public launch. Send a test feed and check the Control Room preview, stream health, motion, framing, and audio. YouTube recommends running a speed test to check upload bitrate. Make sure the sustained upload capacity can support the encoder’s output, with room for normal network variation.
  6. Start and monitor the broadcast. Confirm the correct event, feed, and preview before going live. Keep an eye on YouTube’s stream-health indicators and the encoder/network during operation; a successful initial connection does not guarantee a 24/7 connection.

Plan a continuous broadcast around YouTube’s 12-hour limits

Archives are not assured beyond 12 hours

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not use the YouTube archive as the only copy of a continuous program. Record a local backup while streaming; an external drive is one optional place to store it. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

DVR rewind may be limited

For streams extending beyond 12 hours, DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable. If viewers need to replay earlier moments, account for that limitation rather than promising rewind across a full-day broadcast. YouTube explains this in its DVR guidance.

Choose a continuity plan

Decide how the encoder will recover from a power, software, network, or ingest interruption, and who will notice and respond. A planned stop and restart can create separate streams, not one uninterrupted broadcast or archive. The official guidance does not establish an uninterrupted-service guarantee or prescribe a particular computer or server specification, so test your own setup and keep the local recording independent of YouTube.

Check rights and originality before looping

Clear every video and audio element

Confirm that you have the rights needed to broadcast every clip, image, game capture, soundtrack, and other audio element. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and can interrupt or terminate a stream. A license alone may not prevent a Content ID interruption: for licensed third-party material, check whether the owner must add your channel to a Content ID allowlist before you go live. Review YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance. Use this copyright safety checklist as a preflight aid.

Do not assume a loop qualifies for monetization

Repetitive or mass-produced material can affect monetization eligibility. YouTube’s authenticity policy applies to live streams and expects original, authentic viewer value; a static or repeated loop is not automatically eligible. Review the current YouTube channel monetization policies and check your channel’s eligibility and the features available for its vertical and horizontal live formats.
