You can keep a ProRes file as your high-quality master without sending a ProRes-sized stream to YouTube. Use an encoder to convert it into a supported, compressed live feed at a bitrate suited to your resolution and frame rate. For a 24/7 stream, the encoder or hosted playout service must keep sending that feed continuously; YouTube then transcodes the live stream for viewers.
Why a ProRes master does not require a ProRes live stream
ProRes is useful as a high-quality source for editing and archiving, but its large file size is not a requirement for live delivery. An encoder reads the ProRes file and produces a smaller stream for YouTube. The live bitrate is determined by the output codec, resolution and frame rate—not by the size of the source file.
YouTube’s live encoder recommendations list H.264, HEVC/H.265 and AV1. YouTube says it transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. That does not mean every compressed setting will preserve every detail of the ProRes master: check the encoded picture and sound using representative footage before committing to a long run. Choose continuous playout: local or hosted
Run an encoder on a local computer
A local encoder or playlist workflow gives you control over the source and output, but the computer, encoder and internet connection must stay available for the stream to continue. The connection needs adequate outbound upload capacity for the stream. YouTube’s encoder directory lists software encoders, including Open Broadcaster Software; the directory is a list of options, not an independent performance review. YouTube encoder directory

Use hosted playout for a 24/7 prerecorded stream
A hosted service can keep uploaded video playing from the cloud rather than relying on a computer at home. YouTube’s encoder directory also lists a cloud service category for continuous prerecorded-video streams, but the listing does not establish any provider’s uptime, terms or suitability for your specific needs.
StreamNeo is one option for keeping prerecorded videos live on YouTube from the cloud: upload a recording or create a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It is #1 here because it runs continuously from the cloud, streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and includes a free first day. It streams to YouTube only.

Set the live output bitrate and format
For the live feed, YouTube recommends RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. Its current encoder page lists frame rates up to 60 fps, H.264, HEVC/H.265 and AV1, and Rec. 709 for SDR. For HDR live streaming over RTMP(S), YouTube recommends H.265. These are platform settings, not guarantees of identical visual quality for every type of footage. YouTube live encoder settings

The figures are YouTube’s current page recommendations; the page does not state a publication date. Check its full table for other output combinations. Pick the row matching the stream’s actual codec, resolution and frame rate rather than using a ProRes source bitrate as the target. H.264 is a straightforward starting point where encoder compatibility is a concern; YouTube also lists HEVC and AV1, with different recommended rates for some settings.
Check upload capacity and test before looping continuously
- Inspect the source. Confirm its resolution, frame rate, aspect ratio, SDR or HDR status, and whether it contains audio. Keep the ProRes original as the master if you may need to edit it or create a different output later.
- Choose the live output. Select a supported codec and an appropriate resolution and frame rate, then use the matching YouTube bitrate recommendation. Set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with AAC or MP3 audio as appropriate.
- Measure outbound capacity. Compare the stream’s outgoing bitrate with the connection’s real upload capacity. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload bandwidth headroom. Download speed alone does not show that the connection can sustain the stream. YouTube live encoder settings YouTube live streaming troubleshooting
- Preview in Live Control Room. Test motion, fine detail and audio, and watch stream health. If the connection cannot sustain the chosen output, lower the resolution or bitrate and test again.
- Test the continuous workflow. Confirm that the playout returns to the intended video or playlist and that the setup can run for the period you need. A successful short test does not establish that every local connection or third-party service will remain available indefinitely.
Keep ordinary video uploads separate from live delivery
If you are uploading a finished video to a channel rather than sending a live feed, YouTube’s upload recommendations specify MP4 with H.264, listed audio codecs and Fast Start (the moov atom at the front). Its SDR upload recommendations include 8 Mbps for 1080p at standard frame rate and 5 Mbps for 720p at standard frame rate. These are upload settings, not live ingest bitrates. For HDR uploads, YouTube says correct metadata—including transfer function, primaries and matrix—is essential. Its guidance supports PQ or HLG workflows and lists HEVC/H.265, AV1 and VP9 Profile 2 as codecs supporting 10-bit HDR at reasonable bitrates. ProRes 422 and ProRes 4444 are supported for HDR uploads, but YouTube says they require very high bitrates for high quality and may take longer to upload and process. Do not tag footage as HDR if it was not graded as HDR. These upload notes should not be mistaken for live-stream output settings. YouTube HDR video guidelines

Troubleshooting
The stream buffers, drops frames or loses connection
The outbound connection may not have enough sustained capacity, or the chosen bitrate may leave too little headroom. Check upload capacity, compare it with the full outgoing stream bitrate, and reduce bitrate or resolution if necessary. YouTube recommends about 20% upload headroom.
The picture looks worse than the ProRes file
The live stream is a compressed delivery encode, not the untouched master. Verify that the encoder is using the intended resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate, and inspect footage with motion and detail in the Live Control Room preview. Try a more suitable YouTube-recommended output setting if bandwidth allows.
HDR looks wrong
Confirm that the footage was actually graded as HDR and that the workflow preserves correct HDR metadata. YouTube warns against applying HDR metadata to footage that was not graded in HDR. For live HDR over RTMP(S), its encoder guidance identifies H.265.
A finished-video upload takes too long
That is an upload and processing issue, distinct from the bitrate of a live feed. YouTube notes that ProRes HDR files can require very high bitrates for high quality and take longer to upload and process. For live delivery, keep the ProRes master and encode a smaller supported stream instead.

Copyright and monetization checks for a loop
Before making a prerecorded stream continuous, make sure you have the rights to the video, music, game footage and other material in it. A technically valid encoder setup does not grant permission to broadcast copyrighted content or determine whether a channel meets YouTube’s monetization rules. Review YouTube’s current policies for the specific content and channel rather than assuming that looping makes a work eligible. StreamNeo copyright safety checklist
