Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For a playlist that advances through multiple clips in OBS on Linux, use the VLC Video source and make sure VLC is installed. Use Media Source for a single file. Before converting a playlist, test a representative clip: a familiar filename extension alone does not guarantee that the installed media stack can decode every stream inside it.
Choose the OBS source for your playback
For one video: Media Source
Add a Media Source when the scene needs to play one individual file. OBS documents video extensions including .mp4, .ts, .mov, .flv, .mkv, .avi, .gif and .webm, as well as audio types including .mp3, .aac, .ogg and .wav. The list describes file types, not a promise that every codec variant or track will work in every Linux setup. OBS Media Sources documentation
For clips that should advance: VLC Video
Add a VLC Video source when you want OBS to play a playlist of files. It relies on VLC libraries for extended media support, so VLC must be installed for the source to appear. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC. Linux distribution packages differ, so the exact installation steps depend on your distribution and how OBS was packaged. Set up and check a playlist
- Add the source: In the target scene, use the Sources panel’s add control and select VLC Video. If that option is absent, first check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
- Populate the playlist: Open the source properties and add the files you want to play. Use a small representative playlist first rather than loading a large collection before checking playback.
- Check ordering: Leave Shuffle off if clips should play in listed order. Shuffle defaults to off, but verify the setting rather than relying on its default.
- Choose end behavior: Set Loop Playlist according to whether playback should restart after the last clip. It defaults to on; turn it off if the playlist should end instead.
- Choose visibility behavior: Set what playback should do when the scene is hidden—stop, pause or continue—as appropriate for the scene. This affects playback when switching scenes.
- Test sound and optional tracks: Confirm that the intended audio track plays. Set subtitles only if the file and use case need them. Network caching is also available in the source settings; change it only when a network-media symptom gives you a reason.
OBS exposes these playlist and playback controls in VLC Video properties. Their presence does not mean every playlist needs adjustment: check the behavior you want and change only the relevant setting. OBS Media Sources documentation

#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check files before converting them
- Choose a representative clip. Include a file with the codecs, audio tracks, subtitles and other characteristics that occur in your collection. Testing one ordinary file may not reveal issues in files with different streams.
- Open it in the source you plan to use. Confirm that video and audio play, subtitles behave as expected if needed, and the picture’s aspect ratio is correct in the scene.
- If it fails, inspect the actual streams. A filename extension identifies a container or file type; it does not establish which video and audio codecs or tracks are inside, or whether your installed media stack can decode them.
- Check the installed support before batch work. FFmpeg’s documentation lists supported formats and codecs, but capabilities depend on how FFmpeg was built. The same caution applies to assumptions based only on an extension: test the files with the media components available in your setup. FFmpeg general documentation
- Convert only after identifying a specific problem. Choose a conversion based on the source streams, target playback support, resolution, frame rate, audio needs, and acceptable quality and file size. There is no universally established OBS-on-Linux preset in the cited documentation.
OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide covers format and codec considerations for OBS workflows. Its note that HLS output uses .ts segments and a playlist describes HLS output; it is not a recommendation to convert local playlist files to .ts. OBS Audio/Video Formats Guide
Keep the original or convert?
| Choice | Use it when | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the original | The file plays correctly in the intended OBS source, with the desired picture, sound, and tracks. | Test the actual file in your setup; its extension alone does not guarantee every stream will decode. |
| Convert a file | Inspection identifies a playback compatibility issue, or a specific quality or file-size requirement calls for a change. | Select settings based on the source’s codecs, resolution, frame rate, audio streams, and target support. No universal preset is established by the cited sources. |
Troubleshoot common playlist problems
VLC Video does not appear in the source list
- Likely cause: VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS.
- Fix: Check your OBS and VLC installations. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC. If the source remains missing, check how your distribution’s OBS package provides VLC integration; package behavior varies.
A file is listed but does not play correctly
- Likely cause: The extension is supported but a codec, track, damaged file, or build-specific media component prevents correct decoding.
- Fix: Test the file by itself, inspect its actual streams and confirm the expected audio and subtitle tracks. Convert only if the issue is diagnosed, then test the converted file before replacing others.
Clips play in an unexpected order or stop at the end
- Likely cause: Shuffle or Loop Playlist is set differently from what you intended.
- Fix: Open VLC Video properties, turn Shuffle off for listed order, and set Loop Playlist on or off to match the desired end behavior.
Playback changes when switching scenes
- Likely cause: The source’s visibility behavior governs whether playback stops, pauses, or continues while its scene is hidden.
- Fix: Select the behavior that matches your scene workflow and test it by switching away and back.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a pre-recorded YouTube stream that keeps running without a Linux computer at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. You do not need to keep a computer, OBS, or your home connection running. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not from a camera.
