Before a major PC game launches, check the game’s current requirements, make room on the drive it will use, confirm your graphics driver comes from the correct GPU maker, and protect important files and saves. There is no single free-space target or driver update that is right for every PC: the game, Windows version, graphics hardware, and launcher all matter.
1. Check the game’s requirements and the right drive
Start with the game publisher’s current system requirements and installation guidance. Note the required storage and whether the game needs additional space for updates or optional content. Then check the specific drive where you plan to install it; free space on another drive does not automatically help.
Game installation space and Windows update space are separate needs. Microsoft says Windows update storage varies with the update path, optional features, and installed content. Its support guidance says feature updates typically require 6 GB–11 GB or more, and quality updates 2 GB–3 GB or more. These are examples for Windows updates—not recommendations for game installs or a universal amount of space to keep free. Follow the live Windows prompt and the game publisher’s current requirements for your PC. Microsoft’s Windows update storage guidance explains why needs vary.
2. Find and safely free storage
- Open Settings > System > Storage in Windows. Labels can vary slightly by Windows version. Review the categories to see what is using space on the relevant drive.
- Open Windows’ cleanup recommendations or review Storage Sense settings. Check what Windows proposes to remove before confirming. Storage Sense can remove temporary files and Recycle Bin contents; don’t manually delete unfamiliar folders just to make room.
- Recheck available space on the installation drive, then compare it with the game’s current requirements and any Windows update prompt. Windows also uses reserved storage for temporary files, caches, and update operations. Microsoft’s Storage Sense instructions describe the built-in options.
If there still isn’t enough space, consider whether files can be moved or backed up before buying storage. An external drive may suit some uses, but check the game’s support for external installations, your PC’s ports, and whether the drive is intended for running games or keeping file copies. The available guidance does not establish a universally suitable capacity, connection, or drive model. Microsoft’s backup and transfer options and its file-transfer guidance can help you plan a copy workflow.

3. Check your graphics driver without guessing
Identify your graphics card and Windows version, then get the driver from the GPU maker’s official support or download page. Select the exact GPU model and operating system. Steam’s general support advice points users to NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel for graphics drivers and notes that outdated drivers can affect performance even when a PC meets a game’s requirements. Use the live vendor page rather than relying on an old version number. Steam’s graphics-driver guidance provides links to the manufacturers.
A vendor may release a game-specific or “Game Ready” driver around a launch. That can be relevant if the release applies to your GPU and setup, but an update is not a guarantee of better performance in every game. Check the release notes and your vendor’s current listing before deciding whether to install it. NVIDIA describes the purpose of its Game Ready releases and publishes version- and date-specific announcements at its Game Ready driver page; dated examples there should not be mistaken for current recommendations.

4. Back up personal files and important saves
Before changing software or making space, identify the personal files you would not want to lose and any game saves that are not safely synchronized elsewhere. Windows’ backup options have different jobs:
- Windows Backup: can sync selected user folders to OneDrive. Check which folders are selected and whether the files you care about are included. See Microsoft’s Windows Backup instructions.
- File History: keeps versions of personal files on an external drive or network location. It is a file-versioning option, not a replacement for checking that your important files are actually in the backup location. See Microsoft’s File History guidance.
- Recovery Drive: helps restore Windows system files; it does not include personal files. Use a separate file-backup method for documents, photos, and other data you need to preserve. See Microsoft’s Recovery Drive instructions.
Cloud and external or network-drive backups involve different trade-offs, including internet access, available space, and how quickly you can reach large files. For a manual copy to an external drive, check that the files are present on the destination and safely eject the drive when finished. Game-save syncing depends on the specific title and platform. Check the game’s and launcher’s settings or support page; do not assume that every game syncs saves, or that cloud saves cover all local data.

- Restart Steam.
- In your Library, right-click the game and choose Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
- Let the check finish before starting another verification or other intensive system work. Steam notes that one or more files can fail verification normally when they are local configuration files.
