How to Preserve Video Quality When Looping a File to YouTube Live

Loop a file in OBS without sacrificing picture quality: match the source, use YouTube’s live encoder settings, and test upload stability before going live.

To preserve quality, loop the original file in OBS, match the stream’s resolution and frame rate to what the file can genuinely deliver, then use YouTube’s live-ingest bitrate guidance for your selected codec. Use CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and a stable upload connection with headroom. Looping does not itself degrade a file, but scaling, re-encoding, weak source quality, or an unstable connection can make the live picture look worse.

What affects quality in a looped live stream

There are two separate stages: the video file you start with and the live feed your encoder sends to YouTube. A high-quality source can still look poor if it is enlarged beyond its real resolution, encoded with too little bitrate, or interrupted by network trouble. Conversely, raising live bitrate cannot restore detail missing from the source.

  • Source: Use a correctly encoded file with the resolution and frame rate you intend to show. Avoid enlarging low-resolution footage just to select a higher output resolution.
  • Encoder output: Choose YouTube’s live bitrate guidance for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate. Live recommendations are different from video-upload recommendations.
  • Connection: Your sustained upload capacity must support the full stream bitrate, with room for variation.
  • YouTube processing: YouTube transcodes incoming live video into playback formats. This helps serve viewers on different devices, but does not recreate source detail lost earlier in the chain. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Set up the loop in OBS

  1. Check the file and rights. Play it locally to confirm the picture and audio are correct. Make sure you have the rights needed for both the video and its audio; a loop setting does not grant permission to broadcast copyrighted material.
  2. Add the file. In OBS, use Sources → + → Media Source, create or select a source, and browse to the local video file. In the Media Source properties, enable Loop. OBS documents this option as replaying the file after playback completes: OBS Media Sources.
  3. For a playlist, use VLC Video. Add a VLC Video source, select the playlist files, and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed. Check the preview: OBS’s loop option does not guarantee a seamless picture or sound transition at the file boundary.
  4. Check framing and audio. Confirm that the full picture fits the canvas as intended, that it is not unintentionally stretched or cropped, and that audio is present at a sensible level. Review the transition where the file restarts.
  5. Connect OBS to YouTube Live. Create or select a live stream in YouTube Studio, then enter its stream key and server URL in OBS’s stream settings. Treat the stream key like a password: it directs the encoder to your stream and should not be shared. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate

Set the output to match the source rather than inventing detail through upscaling. YouTube’s recommendations depend on the ingest codec and video mode. The following are examples from its live settings for H.264 SDR; they are minimum and recommended encoder bitrates, not guarantees of a particular viewer experience.

Output mode H.264 minimum H.264 recommended
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

For other modes, or when using H.265/HEVC or AV1, check the current YouTube live encoder settings and use the figures for that codec and resolution. YouTube’s general live guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS; confirm that the encoder and protocol you choose support your intended combination.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Use CBR (constant bitrate) for RTMP/RTMPS.
  • Set the keyframe interval to two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Use progressive scan, square pixels, and Rec. 709 for SDR, following YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
  • For audio, use a supported format such as AAC or MP3 as specified by YouTube and your encoder.
  • YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted version of RTMP. Its default behavior detects resolution and frame rate; manual selection is available with a custom stream key.

Do not copy the source file’s bitrate into OBS automatically. The file’s encoding bitrate and the live encoder’s output bitrate describe different stages. YouTube’s separate H.264 SDR upload examples are 8 Mbps for 1080p at standard frame rate and 12 Mbps for 1080p at high frame rate; its live examples above recommend 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. Use the live chart for a live feed, not the upload chart. See YouTube’s upload encoding settings.

Make sure the upload connection can sustain the stream

Your connection must carry the complete outgoing stream, including audio, without running at its limit. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom and keeping total stream bitrate below available upload bandwidth. Its guidance is to test upload capacity before streaming: YouTube streaming tips.

  1. Run an upload speed test under conditions similar to the planned broadcast, preferably when the network is busy enough to reveal typical contention.
  2. Compare the sustained upload result with the total configured stream bitrate and preserve the recommended headroom.
  3. If the local wireless link is inconsistent, try Ethernet. A cable can improve reliability of the connection between the computer and router, but it cannot increase the internet service’s available bandwidth by itself.

If the available upload capacity cannot reliably sustain the chosen settings, reduce the output bitrate or choose a lower resolution or frame rate that matches the source. An ambitious bitrate is not useful if it causes dropped frames or interruptions.

Test before leaving the stream unattended

  1. Start with a private or otherwise appropriate test stream and use footage with movement and audio similar to the planned loop.
  2. Check the Live Control Room preview for framing, smooth playback, and sound. Review stream health rather than judging quality from the encoder preview alone.
  3. Open the channel or watch page on another device, including a phone, to verify that viewers can reach the stream and that playback looks and sounds right.
  4. Let the test continue long enough to spot network instability and inspect the file’s loop boundary. Monitor audio and video over time before relying on it unattended.

Lower latency can increase playback buffering when network conditions are difficult. If viewers report buffering, review latency and stream health; choosing a lower-latency mode does not improve image fidelity. DVR can let viewers pause, rewind, and resume a live stream, but it does not sharpen the picture. See YouTube’s live stream settings.

Troubleshoot a soft, blocky, or buffering stream

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
Picture looks soft even when the connection is stable Low-detail source, unintended scaling, or an output mode that does not match the file Check the original file’s resolution and frame rate, remove unnecessary enlargement, and confirm OBS canvas and output framing.
Blocks or smearing during motion Live bitrate too low for the codec and output mode, or source compression is already poor Check YouTube’s live bitrate recommendation for the selected codec and mode, then verify the connection can sustain it with headroom.
Stream health shows interruptions or viewers see buffering Upload capacity is insufficient or unstable, or the local network link is unreliable Test sustained upload speed, preserve 20% headroom, consider Ethernet, and lower output demands if necessary.
OBS preview is correct but the YouTube stream is not Ingest configuration, network, or YouTube-side processing differs from the local preview Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health; verify codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, server URL, and stream key.
Audio or image jumps at each restart The file’s beginning and end do not form a seamless boundary Inspect the source’s first and last frames and audio, or edit the file to make the transition less abrupt. The loop control alone does not promise a seamless loop.
